  • The best off-the-shelf string for downtuning
Size: .035-.130 Standard
I'm typically a Thomastik Jazz Flats guy (going on 20 years now), but my metal band plays in drop C, so I bought these for my 5 string Warwick (the b-string was not used) because they are extremely heavy gauge. Tension is perfect, has that bright metal-band-slap when I need it, but not too slinky to where you can't just get a clean tone out of the thing. Drop c on a 34" 5 string neck, this is a great set. That low b string is big enough to where I wonder if this set could do an F# tuning... My experience with rotosounds has been that they shred your fingertips, and their low B strings lose resonance extremely quickly. If you're a standard tuning guy, don't like string noise, or don't like losing fingertips, I'd go with Thomastik jazz flats or Elixirs. These were a budget solution, to figure out what gauges I want to use, before I drop a buncha scratch on Kalliums. ... show more

  • Rotosound Strings for Ibanez 6-string Ibanez Bass
Size: .030-.125 Hybrid
Strings came on time and I immediately put them on the bass and started playing. The tone is phenomenal and will buy again in the future.

  • Classic sound and performance, but don't last long
Size: .030-.125 Hybrid
I recently put this set on my Ibanez SR-506 6-string bass. I'd been using the same Elixir sets as the ones that came on my bass, and had tried D'Addario nickel and steel strings, and nothing held up as long as I wanted before losing tone. Nothing had the right combination of bass and bottom. The Elixirs had a funky, unpleasant feel, and the D'Addarios had consistency problems, particularly with D strings (plus the stainless steel ones ate my fingers). The Rotosounds made my bass come alive. The classic tone and superb intonation that they offer brought back old memories of the 4-string sets. Tone is consistent across all 6 strings, and they're holding up beautifully so far. Touch, attack, sustain, tone, they've got it all. My only qualm with the stainless steel Swing Bass sets is that they ate the frets on several different Yamaha basses over the years. I'm hoping that further refinement of the strings and slightly harder fret wire in the Ibanez will keep the wear to a minimum. Then again, with this economy I'm gigging less . . . EDIT: I quit using them after the first set. Their tone was gorgeous at first, but began to change almost immediately. I used them for less than two months. I've since been mostly sticking with DR Lo-Riders, and they generally last 6 months or more. ... show more

  • I love these strings
Size: .030-.125 Hybrid
I love these strings. I have used them for a few years after I heard them on a friends bass. He is well-respected bass player in Nashville and these strings have shown up on several albums he's played on. They have a unique sound. I typically don't like the sound of brand new strings. They're too bright and have too much string noise. When I put a new a new set of these strings on they're still bright, but in a clean crisp way without being scratchy. They have a mid-range growl that I absolutely love. I use them on my 4-string Fender Jazz bass and most recently I bought this set for my 6-string Pedulla Thunder bass. The low end is huge without being muddy. It is clean and well defined. I would highly recommend giving these strings a try. ... show more

  • Spank the plank!
Size: .035-.130 Standard
Love that aggressive sound these strings give. They are stainless, so you may get your fingers chewed up a bit initially. These helped me nail those Geddy Lee tones I was looking for, but they're also great for slap. They start out great and full of harmonics. They have that certain ZING you can only get from stainless strings. They will wear out and lose that brightness rather quickly, but I love it all the same. I'll buy more as the need arises. Give em a shot! ... show more
