Frequently asked questions

Elixir Acoustic Guitar Strings (Custom Light, .011-.052) are world-renowned for their superb, long-lasting tone and playability. They're coated with NANOWEB Technology, a patented process that actually coats the entire string - not just the wrap wire - offering a smooth feel and prolonged string life.

These particular Elixir Strings are made from 80/20 Bronze, which is 80% copper and 20% zinc. This combination produces a bright, expressive tone often preferred by acoustic guitarists.

The NANOWEB Coating on the Elixir Strings facilitates an extended lifespan for the strings. It shields the strings from sweat, dirt, oil, and other contaminants, which contributes to the strings' longevity. Besides, it provides a smooth, natural feel reducing finger squeak and enhancing playability.

Custom Light (.011-.052) refers to the gauge of the Elixir Strings. The gauge is the string diameter, and it significantly affects the playability and tone of the guitar. Custom light strings are great for players who value ease of bending and minimal finger fatigue, without sacrificing too much tone and volume.

  • Great strings!
Style: Medium (.013-.056) Size: 1 Pack
I been a professional musician for many decades, with literally thousands of performances over the years. That adds up to a LOT of guitar strings! I have probably tried just about every brand of guitar strings out there, and for my acoustic steel string guitars, Elixer 80/20 Bronze Nanoweb are always my first choice. They last a long time, definitely longer than uncoated strings, and they keep that “broken in” sound from about 10 minutes after being installed for a very long time. My hands seem to sweat a lot, and that can be very hard on strings. When I switched to Elixer Nanoweb strings several years ago, I immediately noticed how much better my guitars sounded over the life of the strings, and how much longer that fresh sound lasted. Besides sounding consistently good for a long time, I am probably spending less money on strings than I was when buying cheaper strings more often. ... show more

  • Brilliance lasts (way) longer
Style: Light (.012-.053) Size: 4 Pack
Great strings. My first time with them. I used to play with Daddario's phosphor bronze (12-52) because they lasted longer than just bronze. I got used to their warmth but always missed the brilliance of bronze alone. After a week or so (actually, less than 10 hours of playing) they also got muted and "brown". These Elixirs have 48 hours on them and still got that bright fresh sound. I love them. ... show more

  • Great strings at a great package price!
Style: Light (.012-.053) Size: 3 Pack
I've been using these strings for years because they feel and sounds great! They also last a long time, which is nice since they cost a bit more than most. Totally worth it though! This 3 pack is a great deal, so if you play a lot and change strings often, this is the way to go.

  • Turned my guitar into a keeper.
Style: Light (.012-.053) Size: 1 Pack
I went to buy a used guitar with a crack in the neck that was "only in the finish." I showed him it was DEEP into the wood and the repair would cost more than he was asking. I could do it but the price would have to come way down. It still played so I tried it, but I found it had too mellow a tone for my liking. (Probably due to its mahogany back, sides and neck.) I said thanks, but I'll pass. He surprised me by giving me the guitar! A really nice Alvarez that would go for $300 in good shape. I fixed the neck, did some digging and found the Elixir strings are available in "Bright and Focused" or "Rich and Full" tone. They also squeaked less, another issue I had with the guitar as-is. I got the bright ones and these strings deliver on both counts. The sound is lovely. These strings basically changed my fixer-upper guitar from a give-away into a keeper! Can't report on durability yet, which is another big claim for Elixirs, but others have confirmed it's true. I'm a fan! ... show more

  • Better than the strings that were on it new…
Style: 8-String Baritone (.016-.070) Size: 1 Pack
I have used Elixir strings before. They always have a great feel and last a good long time. However, in my experience they have sounded great on some guitars and not so much on others. For example if your guitar has an inherently darker tone, (say an acoustic with mahogany back and sides) Elixer will brighten the tone up just a little bit to give a more full tone. But if you have some that is already bright Elixirs will, in my experience, push that brightness over the top. Between the enhanced silence and screechy high end it can be unbeatable. Now, in this case, I purchased a set for my 8-string baritone Guild. There are a few 8-string baris out there. Taylor, Guild, Ibanez, Alvarez, etc.. I can only speak about my experience with my Guild, which has been surprisingly very, very good. I had initially anticipated that the strings would be overly shimmery and too thin-toned for a baritone, but the opposite was true. These elixir strings actually really opened up the bottom end AND brightened the high B string enough to let it sing. The original strings really emphasized the octave A and D strings, these Elixirs are much better balanced. Now with 8-string baritone acoustics I have found that Elixir makes a set, D’Addario makes a set, and anything else would have to be a custom set made string by string, at least as far as i have been able to find. In my opinion, this Elixir set is the best option of them all. One caveat though is that they are sort of expensive but there are more strings, they are longer, and they are coated. So it all adds up on the end. ... show more

  • disappointed with shipping and handling but not the strings
Style: Medium (.013-.056) Size: 1 Pack
I opened the shipping box (unscathed) and the string box (pack of 3) was wrapped in some dubvious repackaging wrap and smashed. It looked like it had been previously opened so I had to individually check each string set for proper guage, condition, etc. They appear to be all there and in proper condition so that's all I can say on the matter of shipping and handling. I don't know the shelf life or how to tell if they are fresh. I've used these strings many times and appreciate the quality and sound on various Martins, Gibson, and Breedlove both unplugged and plugged-in to acoustic amps, etc. I'm not sure if the strings I use on a HD-28 would sound just as great on any guitar. I've found that individual guitars sound different and react to guage as well as materials used so I can't give you a guarantee that these are the best you can buy. I have found better sounding strings for each individual guitars I own, but these are great "general/overall" strings that sound great and do not need replacing near as often. I don't gig or teach. I play almost daily for at least a half-hour (if not 2 or 3) but I keep 4 guitars out of their case and handy so the more guitars I own and strung-up the less those strings get played. I try to keep a few sets on the shelf. They are dependable. If your in search of the best guitar strings, good luck, I've gone down that rabbit hole (been stuck at intermediate level for over 50 years) , and you'll find as I have that its like finding the best sounding acoustic guitar, your opinion of how something sounds matters not. ... show more
