Style: Can Opener with Pliers Grip
There seems to be some confusion among users of this product. Even the company refers to it as "side-cutting", when it appears to me that it actually opens up the top seam of the can. The removed lid will then fit neatly and snugly back; good for several days in the refrigerator. Since it does not cut in conventional fashion, one also doesn't get any brackish or metallic taint/ taste to the contents. To use, the opener is placed atop the can, with the turning handle "up". [ Think "perpendicular" to the placement of a conventional opener.] Squeeze the grip handles with moderate pressure until the top seam is "pinched" in the roller mechanism, and instrument closes fully. Then simply turn the handle as one would with a conventional opener, one full revolution. On some cans, it will be immediately obvious that it has opened; others may require slight upward pressure, after removing the opener. It doesn't take "King Kong" strength to operate, but some of the elderly, arthritic, or others with reduced grip strength may find that this is not the ideal opener for them. I use this opener almost exclusively, and love it - but my wife can't stand it. This personal preference may explain some of the poor reviews [ I cannot think of any other reason for them.] This is the most hygienic opener I have ever used, as no cutters ever touch the contents of the can. Partly for this reason, I gave it a 5-star rating for "easy to clean" - little cleaning is actually needed. Design, materials, sturdiness and functionality are all first-rate. I gave it a 4-star rating for ease of use because of the slight learning curve involved, as well as the fact that those with significant impairment of the hands might be better served with an electric opener. Mine has opened many hundreds (1000 + ?) cans, and seems to work as well as when it opened the first one, quite a few years ago. In addition to cooking at least two meals a day at home, I also am the principal cook for a local veteran's charity. We usually prepare our luncheons in commercial/ institutional kitchens, and I use this opener exclusively, there, also. The largest cans I encounter in such establishments are the #10 cans, and it handles them with ease [Works just as well on tiny cans.] Although I have used this opener for years, I recently (August 2019) purchased two more, as I had mislaid the first (found a few days later.) The new ones appear as well made as the first, I expect that they will last as well, but they don't yet have the length of service of the original one. I have tried to relate my personal experience for the benefit of fellow customers, as well as clear up some confusion. I have not been compensated or remunerated for my review. I would close by saying that this item is an example of getting what one pays for (take a look at the Rosle garlic press as well) - the more cooking that one does, the more one will appreciate it. Just keep a close eye on yours if covetous fellow cooks are nearby [ just kidding - mostly].

What a nice can opener! I converted to side-cutting can openers 4 years ago but I made the mistake of buying a cheap model which stopped working. This time I decided to go with a higher end model. I was hoping it would last longer, but I was not expecting better performance. But better performance is what I got anyway. It cut very smoothly with no hesitating or struggling when the can had a pull-tab. And I didn't think I'd need the tiny little grippy pliers that are built into this model, but it turns out they helped on the very first can I used it on where the lining acted as an adhesive. So my review is that this one is worth the extra cost.

Style: Can Opener with Pliers Grip
Brilliant can opener, easy to use, smoothly and effortlessly removes the end of the can, forming it into a replaceable lid as it does so. Has a little plier that grips the edge of the lid for cases where the lid is reluctant to come free. Main reason for purchase was that it's guaranteed for life; bought it 2020 and it still works like new. Not cheap, but worth it; highly recommended.

We needed to replace our 20 year old opener as it was not working quite as well. I decided to spend over twice what most openers on Amazon were selling for so that I could get a great quality precision opener. This supposedly German made opener could not cleanly open the first can I attempted. After three passes around the can with extreme clamping force, I was finally able to pop open the can turning the can upside down and tapping it (spilling tuna juice everywhere). The second attempt was on another can of tuna (different brand), and I could not get it open. I had to rely on shoving a knife in a small available crease to pry it open enough to then use pliers out my shop to tear it open enough to get the tuna out (see attached pic). Frankly, at least my old opener still works reasonably well without leaving sharp edges. Although this opener is in fact made in China, it appears the German design is at fault here. I returned this $50+ opener as soon as possible.

Needed to replace an old electric can opener. Cook a lot but don’t really open many cans. Looked at many options. Decided manual was all I needed. Was seeking a basic can opener. Lots of excellent reviews for basic openers but quite a few negative ones as well. Then came across this one. Not cheap but reviews indicated how it will last. Then saw concerns about metal shavings being created. And saw that America’s Test Kitchen didn’t recommend this opener. Since I enjoy cooking, I find using quality tools add to the enjoyment. Decided to try this opener. Used it on a can and realized how good it actually is. Not completely intuitive but, gee, just listen to what reviewers have said and it is so easy. The opener works so well that you don’t quite realize it is opening the can. First, put the opener on top (not on the side). AMK said it was hard to position. Don’t understand that comment. Concerns about metal shavings are due to not understanding how to operate the tool. Once you go fully around the can, there is a pop sound but the can doesn’t appear to be open. If one continues to go around the can, then shavings might be created. But after the pop, just stop. The lid may still appear to be connected but then use the little teeth like pliers to grab the top and remove. No sharp metal edge. Top fits neatly back onto the can of you want to do that. Will need to teach my spouse how to use but it can be learned immediately. This will last a very long time! I can clearly understand all the high praise.

We've had this for nearly 3 years now! haha. 3 years ago we went on a hunt for a good quality can opener. We bought 2 or 3 in a row that went bad after a couple weeks or months. It was awful! We researched and looked around and tried to pick the ones that would say "stainless steel". But almost always the gear looking part would rust and wear down. Sometimes fast! Like stupid fast! It was so frustrating. We were always buying (do to familiarity) the top open can openers that would dig into the can from the top and cut around the top. We decided to try this type of can opener instead, and we have been SUPER pleased! Not only has it lasted for nearly 3 years without rusting or falling apart, it has not shown any signs of wear! It works just as good as when we first bought it (from what i can remember). It works by un-crimping (I think) the top of can from the side. Super cool. Never owned one like this. We love that there are almost never sharp pointy parts left on the can to gauge your hand or fingers on. It's WAY safer for our kids now. Its easier to turn than the others we had. And we almost never have to clean it! Because it doesnt dip into the can at all. This has been one of the best purchases we have made in a long time. Super pleased! Thank you! UPDATE: 7/12/24. It’s been 6 years since we bought this can opener and it still works like new! No rusting parts! I hardly ever have to wash it! It’s a dream come true! Haha so pleased!

I guess the saying "You get what you pay for" holds true. We were tired with the dificulty using poor quaity can openers and elected to go for broke. This is an expensive can opener but hands down it is the best, easy to use and makes a clean safe lid removal. We made a good choice.
