  • In most ways superior to my Firestick, but I have improvement suggestions...
Style: Streaming Device
I have been a long-time user of the Amazon Firesticks. I have many of them at my homes and also travel internationally with one. I use a few applications and subscribe to a half dozen streaming services including Prime. There are pros and cons to the Roku compared to my prior experiences: PROS: 1. Better user interface. 2. Better integrated program guide, which is more neutral to streaming media vs. Firestick which is optimized for Amazon Prime users. For example, it works nicer with my Google systems. 3. More third-party support for add-ins and customizations. 4. Nicer remote control. CONS: 1. Not as controllable with Alexa home control system. 2. Setting up new televisions is not as convenient. Because I travel a lot, I must set up my stick with a new television as much as three times per week. The Amazon set up for this works faster. The main difference is I can control volume (and channel, but I rarely use that). I wish these systems had a more reliable way to also switch inputs on these televisions, but hotels make that complex. 3. Setting up hotel networks is not as convenient. See above about travel. The Firestick allows me to browse a hotel website to set up a connection, but the Roku forces me to connect to its internal WiFi transceiver with a separate device (like my phone) to log into the hotel network. This works but is far less convenient and slower. 4. I wish the remote had removable batteries (or a way to physically switch off the remote). Because I travel extensively when I pack the Roku sometimes it comes out of my bag with little to no battery, because something ended up pressing buttons on the remote. That's inconvenient because I have to charge the remote before I can use the Roku. With my Firestick I just remove the batteries when it travels and put them back in when I'm ready to install. 5. The charging cord is a bit unwieldy and yet somehow necessary. The Firestick was more self-contained. When I travel I notice a lot of hotels have a Google device already connected to the TV. With the Firestick I can just pull the micro USB and HDMI cables out of that device and into the Firestick. With the Roku I have to pull the USB-A end out of the power cable. Small difference, but it means I have to access more of the back panel of the TV, and often hotels do not make that easy. But, overall, I have replaced my Firestick with the Roku as my travel companion. ... show more

  • I really like Roku.
Style: Streaming Device
I had to replace my less than a year old unit. The on/off and volume control stopped working; then when I tried to search it would jump 3 or 4 items at a time so I could not select what I wanted to watch. I got the new one in and it works but I could not get the on/off and the volume to work. I was paying $140 a month for dish X 12 months = $1680 per year and what I wanted to watch was very limited. I paid $60 for Roku one time and have been able to watch all I could ever want to watch. So I saved $1620 and got to watch so many more programs. So even with the small problems it is still worth the cost. ... show more

  • Mostly works; can't pair to my TV -- Important Remote UPDATE
Style: Streaming Device
My Roku Ultra died after (only) four years. For my needs this 4K+ is plenty good enough. This has the rechargeable remote, which I also had with the Ultra. I'm not sure this remote version doesn't have some little bugs. So, the 4K+ works fine with my streaming. And it has two 'programmable' buttons which I set to start my primary streaming service and one other thing I stream regularly. Love that feature, and it works great. But it does not work using the power button to turn the tv on or off, and the volume control doesn't work. It recognized my TV brand, but pairing failed on several attempts. Fortunately, I can work around that pretty easily and I decided not to mess with trying other Rokus -- the two personalized buttons DO turn the TV on (but not off). My TV is 8 years old (and IMHO Roku should support ANY working smart TV). So that's a disappointment. Tech isn't cheap and it should do what it says it will do. So far, this remote doesn't have the issue I had with the Ultra's similar remote -- it fairly regularly froze and I had to plug it into the recharge cable (even though it was charged) for it to 'reconnect' the remote to function. I couldn't get any answers on why it did that. So, bottom line, I've been using Roku for several years on three TVs and I'm comfortable with them and don't want to switch to something different (yet). Technology is complicated with 100s of different TV brands and styles. The hoops I have to jump through for this to do all I need it to do are small ones, so I'm okay with it. UPDATE: After trying to get help from Roku (you can actually chat with them, but it's hard to find), I returned this as being defective. Turns out, because the next Roku I bought to replace this, also had the same pairing problem. In chatting with Roku again I was given different instructions on how to reboot the remote. So here is that: Press and hold the power and pairing buttons simultaneously for 16 seconds (nothing seemed to happen), then go to System, Remotes, Set up to operate TV, And it worked this time. I don't know why a brand new remote needs rebooting, and you might have to be online with Roku for that to work, but as long as it finally worked. Roku says it will work with ANY TV that has HDMI. ... show more

  • Super easy to install and use
Style: Streaming Device
Was really easy to install - simply plugged into an open HDMI port on the back of the TV and then use the included USB cable to plug into an available USB port on the TV to provide power (was nice that a power block was included in case you don't have USB on the TV and need to plug into a wall outlet). From there, the device itself did a great job of walking me through setup and configuration - I really liked how most apps provided a QR code that I could scan with my phone and quickly authorize the Roku device. For those things I needed to setup directly on the device, I was more than impressed at how well the voice recognition worked - made entry of long e-mail addresses and passwords quite simple. After testing the device on one TV, I purchased a second about a week later for another TV. ... show more

  • Easy to install
Style: Streaming Device
1st Day using it and it is easy to navigate. The Wifi was easy to setup, and it supports 2.4 & 5G speed. Having a problem during setup. It stated only option for resolution was 1080P yet my TV is a Samsung UNF9000 4K on TV and Xfinity is set up for 4K. 30fps while the TV specs state 240 refresh rate. Anyone know how to work around 30 fps vs 60 fps on this model TV? ... show more
