We replaced our old solar charge controller with this on in our overlanding truck. Now we can seamlessly charge from our starting battery while we travel, and get efficient MPPT charging from the panels while camped. The phone app has a quirk or two, but works, and lets us know how the panels are doing at camp from a peek at our phones. A bit expensive, but worked well. Full review on Woof The Beaten Path blog.

I purchased the Renogy 30amp dc to dc charger with mppt around one year ago while completing an overlanding build. I previously used a solenoid to charge to second battery and was unable to keep to charge the battery completely regardless of the drive time or battery level. I rely on this battery for a 12volt fridge, lights, and other minor power needs while off grid for several days. I purchased this unit to complete my power needs as I finished my build. It does everything it advertises and it does it well. I have ran this unit for approximately one year with not one problem. I tend to over build my systems so I used larger than recommended wiring and I am very picky about my connections. I depend on this vehicle to take me on 3000 mile trips and get my family and me home safely and this charge controller exceeds my needs. I plan to add other Renogy products to my systems in the future such as the battery monitor and inverter. I will also use this controller and other Renogy products on new build that I am working on now.

Size: 30A Battery Charger
I bought a 240 w solar panel that has an output voltage of about 30 volts DC but this unit has a maximum input voltage of 25 volts so obviously I couldn't use it. Why it has such a limited voltage input is a mystery but Renogy needs to step it up and make these units handle higher voltages.

Product started burning after a while. Unfortunately because it had been a while since purchasing, we contacted Renogy directly to see if they could help us. They just dragged us around for weeks and months just to tell us to figure it out with Amazon. We let them know from the getgo that it was smelling of burnt smell, and we tried using the same product of a friend's, it worked fine. However, they continued to ask us different questions on and on. They could have asked everything upfront. I do not know why they were leading us on if they were going to just waste our time and efforts (testing voltages and filming videos, sending emails back and forth...) Thankfully Amazon was really helpful and helped us. I hope this new item will work fine, but it really is annoying and Renogy has disappointed us when we bought so many of their products. They ended up not even helping us after wasting our time.

I like that this combines solar with alternator power. There is an extra wire included to hook onto the ignition if you have a smart alternator. I do have a smart alternator, but do not know where to hook this component into in my 2020 Transit van. That's apparently not a big deal, since this 30 amp charger manages to keep my 300 Ah lIF battery topped off even without solar. Only one thing I wish it would do: My house battery outputs 14 amp, which fries some loads, including a popular ceiling fan. If this charger could adjust battery output voltage, it would be perfect. It's pretty good as it is.

We build vans for clients and have now had three of these fail within months of the product warranty ending. Sadly this has been a consistent problem with Renogy products. You save money upfront but spend more long term, replacing failed products. Their support team doesn’t care, we’ve spoke to them many times and once that warranty is over, SOL. If you buy this, purchase the extended warranty - but at that cost you might as well get a more expensive but reliable product from another company. Unfortunately cannot recommend these.
