While this kinda works, if your Hercules, it's nor worth the price or effort. It takes alot of muscle to split anything with this. Maybe it was made for bamboo? Compared to using a mallet and wedge style kindling splitters, this is far more effort or unsplittable. Too short. Transport for camping? Can't screw to trees in parks. $129? Mallet/wedges cost half that and are far less work, safer, and transportable without putting holes into a mounting surface, just to leave the holes behind. The safety ring? No clue what it's purpose is as it's not long enough to slide over the handle and if it were, it's far from being able to figure out by a child. I purchased this item at the end of last winter season, so this winter it's been put to work. The handle broke already, it doesn't split wood easy. We're currently using a rubber mallet to be able to cut into kindling. Definitely not recommended this product. I paid $150 last year, a waste of money

I have reviewed multiple cast-iron wood-splitting devices over the past year, and this one was probably the least effective at splitting anything larger than a piece of kindling. When I was able to split a piece of wood, it took an inordinate amount of force to get the wood through the splitter at the bottom. If one was to invest this much money in a splitter, they would definitely want it to break down larger pieces of wood efficiently and without a ton of work. This is a very functional and sturdy splitter. What was a little challenging for me was that the splitter is fairly restricted to what you can cut. The logs themselves can't be any meaningful links and they really have to be older more season logs for this to go through it. May be a little bit longer handle for leverage would've helped. ... show more

With weather getting colder where I live, we've been using the fireplace fairly often. We had typically been splitting wood and making kindling with just a simple hatchet and mallet, but I thought it might be a good idea to use a splitter like this just to be a bit safer. This product is really sturdy and made from materials that'll last a lifetime. It's easy to install and pretty convenient depending on the installation position and height. I do have some gripes with it though. For some reason, it just doesn't work as well as I had hoped it would. For the price, there may be way better options. All in all, I'm somewhat disappointed in this. Maybe I'm using it wrong or something, but I doubt it since it's only got a simple operation. Cool design and intent, though not for me. ... show more

The wood has to be short, about 15 inches ( 38 cm ), most fire wood is cut 18 - 24 inches ( 46 - 61 cm ).. It is made out of solid cast iron and is very sturdy. If you are trying to split any hardwoods like oak, walnut, and certain types of maple good luck. we found the best way to use this is to take the blade off and use it bushcraft style. place the blade on top of the wood you want to split ( sharpened edge down ) and strike it with another piece of wood to drive the blade through. I tried and both of my sons tried to use this while it was mounted both vertically and horizontally. neither way was very productive. so we took the blade off and will use it that way. ... show more
