Description

The definitive guide to feeding your dog a balanced, nutritious, and home- cooked raw diet—from the founder of a natural pets product company with over thirty years of experience Many people want to prepare their dog’s meals at home, but feel it is too complex. Raw and Natural Nutrition for Dogs provides a road map to the essentials of canine nutrition, written in easy-to- understand language. Pet owners seeking to give their dogs a better coat, better skin, and healthier teeth and gums, as well as longer lives and more stable temperaments, will benefit not only from the background data in this book, but also the step-by-step instructions and recipes for preparing these diets. The book includes charts with the recipes, instructions on keeping diets simple and balanced, guidelines on preparation, suggestions for finding ingredients, and how much to feed a dog by body weight. There are recipes for healthy adult dogs, as well as guidelines for puppies, senior dogs, and dogs with health conditions including pancreatitis, renal problems, gastric issues, allergies, heart disease, liver disease, and cancer. Tracing the history of feeding dogs, the author shows when commercial dog food rose and took hold of the market. She discusses canine nutritional needs and provides research on how home-prepared foods can meet pets’ needs better than commercial, processed dog food. Written with thorough information for the seasoned raw feeder, this guide can also be easily followed by any newcomer to home-feeding. This revised edition includes new information on special care and feeding of pregnant, newborn, performance, and toy breed dogs as well as senior dog considerations and the safety of the raw food diet for dogs. • Fantastic book
I have been raw feeding for 20 years but never purchased this book over that time. Finally remembered to buy it and I LOVE how simple but informative it is. I have multiple other books from other vets and authors that are so full of fluff and chapters dedicated to bashing kibble, but I dont feed kibble and have no need to be convinced why it is bad so its a waste of print and time for me. This book is straight to the point with facts, which is wonderful to have when this modern world makes you doubt yourself ... show more

  • This book is incredible!
This is an extremely informative book on nutrition and I have learned SO MUCH from it! I work for a pet store and I frequently am running back to this book to fact check stuff before I help my customers, so I know this book is not only helping me be better at my job, but it's helping so many animals too because their parents are learning how to make better choices in their food! I'd recommend this to anyone that wants to learn about REAL animal nutrition, because your not going to find it in a textbook that says "compliments of *insert giant kibble company's name here* of course they are going to say that food is the best" This book could be considered a textbook for legitimate animal nutrition careers and covers what they biologically need in plain language that everyone can understand. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to become extremely knowledgeable in animal nutrition. ... show more

  • Excellent Bible for Feeding Raw
Well written, easy to understand, and thorough. Referred by knowledgeable and winning local trainer, this is now my bible for feeding raw.

  • Great book for beginners but to have as reference
My dog has been on raw diet now for about 2 months but this book was great to have. I literally scoured the internet, read and researched to death so much so that I began to confuse myself. Everyone has their own method and I have now begun to understand. I was scared and confused but having an actual book at hand is great so I can refer back to it. I also enjoy that she has categorized to dogs with allergies, dogs with specific ailments, dogs who are breeding, etc. I also do not think it's bad as some say here that Olson is mentioning Berte's, it's just her preference. The point she is making is to add probiotics or whatever to aid or enhance and is just a point of reference. I still am not at the point where I have purchased a grinder and I may not. I started with a local butcher (they have their own pet blend but $$) and now I'm moving onto Darwin to control the cost. I'm not sure if I will make my own meals for my dog because I only have 1 dog and don't see myself buying an extra freezer for my dog. If I lived in a house maybe but not for an apartment dweller. I think the point is once you dive into it, you start to realize what you need to do more or less of. I don't think it's down to science as we are all used to~measuring cups and all. Sometimes your dog needs more bone for calcium and sometimes less, just like in the wild they will balance themselves out in time. I do think that my dog is happier on raw, instead of finishing his meal in seconds, nawing on a bone is lasting longer and there's more satisfaction. Only drawback is having to mop the floor everytime (hello bacteria) as he puts the bone part of the meal out of his bowl and onto the floor. I hope that helps. ... show more

  • Fantastic read
I fed raw several years ago, but found it to be a lot of work. I have been feeding chicken backs as a supplement every now and then for many years. Recently I decided to try a complete raw diet for my three dogs. This book is full of great information and an easy read. I was happy to see what I was doing was right in line with what I should be doing. This book has given me the confidence I needed to continue to give my dogs the best possible nutrition I can. I could never go back to commercial dog food. I have recommended this book to my daughter who has a young dog who was recently diagnosed with stage 1 cancer, and also to one of my puppy owners whose dog has had urait stones. I know both of them will benefit greatly from this book. ... show more

  • The best most informative step by step raw food book
This book and the previous version is a must for anyone who is considering extending thier pets life, and avoid food allergies possibly period. I encourage anyone who would like thier pets to live a longer, healthier, happier life to read either version of this book. We have both just because the first one is still something we would use as a reference during different phases of pets life when seen the book was revised we had to get. ... show more

  • Comprehensive, too scientific
Although I have no doubt that this book is scientifically based and very thorough, it made my head spin in actual application... I had no idea where to find many of the different supplements that were suggested, and I also didn't know whether my particular dog needed all of the supplements, etc... It WAS helpful, in that it had a section of recipes specifically for dogs with special health needs (like pancreatitis), as mine does. I used that small, three-page section of the book almost exclusively, so the book wasn't a complete waste. ... show more

I read/skimmed this in one day and was amazed about how much I was able to learn from this! I completely understand feeding raw now. Within one week my dogs feel more energy and less itching, and less poo! (Not smelly either!) My dogs love raw
