  • Delicious recipes, beautiful pictures, and colorful artwork!
I discovered Mely's blog about 5 years ago while attempting to replicate my grandma's traditional Mexican recipes. I was frustrated that so many "authentic" recipes online didn't quite taste right or weren't written by a Mexican person. I found exactly what I was looking for with her blog Mexico in my Kitchen, so of course when I found out she was writing a cookbook I immediately bought it. Tonight I made my first recipe from her book (Pozole Rojo) and it was delicious, as expected. :) The recipes cover a wide range of dishes and are clear and concise, the cover art is beautiful and rich, and the pictures look absolutely mouthwatering! As I flipped through the pages, I got a little emotional seeing recipes my grandma would make but I wasn't sure what they were called. This cookbook is for a home cook interested in traditional Mexican dishes using simple and inexpensive ingredients like beans, rice, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, onion, avocado, and affordable cuts of meat. The more obscure ingredients like dried peppers and specific Mexican cheeses and dairy are very easy to find at a Latin market. For an adventurous cook this cookbook may not be for you, but this is exactly what I was seeking: a delicious collection of authentic homestyle Mexican recipes to keep on hand for everything from weeknight recipes to special occasions. Being Chicana, Mexican dishes have always been my comfort food but I haven't always had the skills to cook those meals myself. Being half Mexican, I have always felt like I was in a halfway place between being white and Latina, never feeling like I quite fit in either group. (Gringos aren't super keen on lengua, menudo or barbacoa once you explain what it is haha) Your recipes have taught me so much about my Mexican heritage and have brought me closer to my culture in a way I never could have done otherwise. I will cherish this cookbook and savor every tasty meal I make. Thank you Mely for writing such a lovely cookbook!! <3 ... show more

  • I remembered my mother so much.
If you want to make a meal and taste like your mother and grandmother look no further. This book is the bomb. Not only does Mely achieves transporting you to your roots but she also does it with simple directions. I’m buying a copy of each of my children so they can have the taste of home after I’m gone. Great job 👏👏👏😊 ... show more

  • Not impressed
Book was in perfect condition. I read reviews where others were disappointed with the condition of the book but that was not the issue in my case. The reason that I had to rate it so low was because the recipes were sooooo basic. The salsa recipes were so basic like a stay-at-home mom in Alaska created them. The recipes were not at all “special”. I sat in bed flipping through the pages and I’m like there is not even one recipe that I would be interested in cooking. The Spanish red rice was laughable. Way too many desserts and drink recipes (boring). No thanks. I returned it right away. I trusted all the high ratings. Not anymore. I’ll stick to YouTube. The authentic Mexican cooks on there throw down. I just hate having to pause and start to try to cook something. But it’s way worth it to get the true authentic with amazing seasoning. ... show more

  • Recipes work as written - excellent dishes!
I've had this book for maybe 2 months by this point and I'll upload photos of the dishes that I've made so far and have taken a photo of. What's great about this book is that the recipes are clearly explained, the items are fairly accessible if you're in proximity to a latin / Mexican neighborhood market for some -- not all -- of the items, and find enjoyment in cooking. For example, as many times as I've had corn on the cob, I've never actually taken corn from a cob to then make a creamy soup. So, there's some learning there, albeit not difficult, but it's the experience of going through that start-to-finish process and eating the end result that really brings a level of satisfaction and fulfillment that I can only get from cooking new dishes. Although the book also has recipes for tamales and tacos, I've taken the approach to make those dishes in the book that I had not already eaten in a Mexican restaurant. I've enjoyed each of the dishes so far. I think the title of the book is aptly named since I would agree: these are home cooked meals. We're not trying to be the next Iron Chef here or Beat Bobby Flay. But don't let that fool you, though: these are great recipes and I really give praise to Mely Martinez on putting this book together and making it so approachable for those of us who did not grow up in a Mexican household where perhaps most of these dishes are so familiar that someone doesn't think twice about it in terms of what makes it so tasty and unique. Thanks Ms. Martinez. I am your newest fan! ... show more

  • If you love Mexican cuisine buy this book
Just received the book today and absolutely love it. Have been following the author for quite some time on her blog and love the fact that now I have all my favorite recipes at my disposal in this handy book. The pictures look amazing and the tips are highly appreciated. And best of all all the dishes can be done with easily accessible ingredients. Can't wait to try some this week. Hubby is already licking his lips since I have made some kf these dishes already previously by following Mely's blog. ... show more

  • Authentic Mexican recipes
I am a long-time reader of Mely Martinez's blog and couldn't wait to purchase her cookbook the week it was released. It is all that I was hoping for and more, a true bible of authentic Mexican cooking. It has everything you need to master the classic home cooking of Mexico. My husband is from Mexico and says that this book has all of the recipes he remembers eating with his family, from childhood comfort-foods like entomatadas and sopa de fideo to celebratory dishes made when the whole family gathers, such as pozole, tamales, pastel de tres leches, and more. Almost every recipe is accompanied by a mouth-watering photo and the directions are explained very clearly, including substitutions if you cannot find certain ingredients. I have already bought two more copies to give as gifts to Mexican friends and family living in the U.S. and cannot wait to try every one of the recipes in this book! ... show more
