  • Just as described, works great
I had to cut down a large maple tree which had roots lifting up the sidewalk. The tree had lots of branches and I needed to dispose of them. There was too much for the recycle can and this woodchipper was perfect for the job. It cost me about the same as renting one and now I can use it over and over again! Not only that but I used the woodchips as mulch in the yard and it looks great. ... show more

  • Disappointed - UPDATE
For Christmas, my daughter gave me a gift certificate for Amazon. In January, I used it to purchase this chipper/shredder. In March, I put it together (easy) and used it to shred some cuttings - and it did a great job. No complaints. Today (late May) I brought it out to shred some branches and debris I had cleaned up in the yard. It didn't work. I checked my circuit breaker, it was fine. I turned on a fan that was plugged into the same outlet - it worked fine. I figured perhaps my extension cord might be broken (it is new, but I checked anyhow), so I plugged in a different cord. Still, my chipper/shredder did not work. I turned it on and off - (hope springs eternal) - but it just sits there. Admittedly, it was not the most expensive chipper/shredder on the market, but I figured it should last more than just one use. It is especially annoying since it was a Christmas present. I noticed the ratings are 3.8, and usually that is not good, but some writers seemed to be quite happy with it. Well, count me among those who are displeased - very displeased. For the very limited amount of time I used it, it probably amounts to one of the most expensive pieces of equipment I've ever purchased. I'd advise others to look elsewhere. (See update below) UPDATE Upon reading my post wherein I stated I was very disappointed that this shredder/chipper did not work the second time I tried to use it, the company contacted me and said they would give me a full refund of my money. It is nice to know that there are still companies out there that stand behind their products, and I commend them for their offer. I still wish the chipper/shredder worked - it is not a lot of fun sitting around cutting branches and yard waste into little schnipples - but such is life, and I suppose our ancestors had to do the same thing, and they survived and so shall I. I hope this was just a rare incident and their products work well for others, but if not, at least it is nice to know the company stands behind their product. ... show more

  • Almost Awesome
Size: Chipper with Bin
If you live in an area where the amount of green waste you dispose of is limited by the city; this may be for you. It works somewhat like a giant juicer and even comes with a paddle to push the leaves and branches down into the machine. It is not nearly as loud (or powerful, or expensive) as a gas power wood chipper, but you will want to wear hearing protection. The instructions are hard to read because they are printed in low resolution black and white, but you can download the color version from the PowerSmart website. I did not put any branches bigger than 1/3-inch into the unit; not because it can't handle larger, but because you dull the blades faster. This machine is basically cutting wood, so anything that cuts wood will dull over time. You can put larger branches in, but just like you can throw your car into park when you are traveling at 60 mph on the freeway, don't be surprised when it doesn't work right after. My main goal was volume reduction, and I reduced the equivalent volume of branches from about 10 trash cans down to 1.5. The blades can be rotated to a second edge, but I went through a clean edge set in about 3.5 hours shredding Camphor branches. The blades they put in this should have been made of higher quality steel. The dulling of the blades is really my own complaint with this machine. PowerSmart should really have an option to buy longer life replacement blades to extend the operating life. I would definitely buy this again, and I am going to get a second set of blades. ... show more

  • Great product. Great price. Extremely pleased. - (add on - very good customer service)
OK...lets start with what this is. It is an simple electric device that turns branches a little bigger than a large grown man's thumb into chips about the size of a new born baby's fingernails. Yes, it is very loud. It is completely different to on I owned in the UK. The design is VERY HIGH SPEED and creates very small wood chips (where as the one I had in the UK created more "nugget" sized output). Not a problem just different than I expected. The output is so small I would consider putting it in my compost heap. (update: I put it in my compost heap, mixing well...great outcome). The more I think about it the more I prefer this output but it would be interesting to have different speed and larger output? Not sure that is possible for $106! This device is not really for leaves. For just over $100 I am impressed. I created about 6 bags of mulch in the first use which is $18 worth (even on sale that is $12 at Lowes). Depending on the size of your property (or willingness to take your neighbors cuttings from the curb) this device will pay for itself and you don't have a bunch of plastic bags going to waste. More to the point, you can put all that nutrients right back into your soil in a very short time. It jammed a couple of times as I put too much in at once and it is easy to get the cover off and clear. That allowed me to get a look at the blades and they are reversible so when they get dull you just flip them over. Then when that side gets dull you can just sharpen all sides of all blades. I can't see why you would ever need new blades as they seem to be pretty good quality. (update: I did flip them over and the blades were sharp as new...then one broke...uh oh...) Great product. Great price. Extremely pleased. UPDATE: 8/14) I have a broken blade. Ok, it happens. I sent an email a week ago to the support address with a copy of my invoice, the serial number, and a picture of the broken blade. Nothing...silence. I will update further as something or if nothing happens. update 8/26/20 - I did get an email from them and they said they were behind due to covid-19 ... I get it. Eventually got an email that they registered my product for me (as I had not done that) and then 3 days later I get (FEDEX express) new blades in the mail. top notch!!! I will actively look for this company's products in the future. (oct 17, 2020) further update - recommending to a friend because of the good customer service! ... show more
