  • Flawless and super easy performance in scanning documents.
My computer crashed and Neet decided they wanted $7 a month to let me download and use their software, that I had already bought and paid for. No way, EVERYBODY, STAY AWAY FROM NEET, so I bought this Plustek PS186. I bought a refurbished one. It had no disks, no instructions, and no calibration paper, which it says is necessary, but I managed without. Found the company website and downloaded their software. (No charge, unlike Neet) Had a lot of trouble getting it to work because they have so many download possibilities and it does not tell you which ones you need, what order to run them it, or anything. Download speed was also extremely slow. Ultimately I got it working and I am very happy with the performance, so far. I need a scanner for documents Almost all black and white. Presets are easy to modify to your preference. You can set a particular folder to scan to, scan to file type, and dpi (100-600), etc. for each profile. That works great for me. Tried it on color documents and results were not too good, lots of lines, even at slow 600 dpi. For black and white docs, it is excellent and fast. Since that is what I need it for most, I am happy with my purchase. You can also easily set or modify a profile to eliminate blank pages, auto-rotate, enhance characters, etc. If you are not pretty computer savvy, stick with the brand new one, that includes the disks (I did not know mine was going to come with no disk). Probably should give it fewer stars but there are these nice advantages too: It folds up quite small, and the folding top keeps dust out of the scanner - that is a major flaw for most other scanners. The document sheet feeder has side guides up high to keep the paper straight, is nearly vertical for good use of gravity, and I have not had a misfeed, so far. (1 day) Before the day was out I had the ultimate test: A 100+ pages two-sided three-hole punched transcript. I did it in two files, each roughly half. Flawless, and so easy. Push "Scan". (I have preset 1 set to a multi-page pdf doc at 300 dpi to be sent to the "scanned docs" folder on my desktop.) I originally posted a 4, because I was so annoyed with the lack of a disk, but went to 5 stars because I bought refurbished, so I blame myself. I saved money for that hassle, and don't think I should blame the seller. I love the product. ... show more

  • Very nice scanner for its price (and it does scan in color)
I saw mostly good reviews about this product. I have been wanting to scan few year worth of papers for a long time and this scanner fit my requirements. At one point of time I almost was going to return it because it said gray scanner, so I thought it was black and white, then I clicked on +new and went through creating a profile which allowed searchable color multipage pdf. Created multiple profiles for each type of scanned item. Speed is ok. Individual pdf takes some time to save, multipage goes through quickly and in the end saves it, though one nuance is after scanning a set of papers, it comes up with an error about no more papers instead of stopping and saving, need to see how to get around it Overall I am very happy with the scanner. ... show more

  • Good products when working
Been using this scanner for a month now and I am pretty disappointed. I will scan about 11 pages and 2 pages will be there but BLANK. I would do it again and a different page will be blank. I have to scan the documents in parts and is such a waste of time. Scanning 2- 3 pages is good but more than than, you have to review the scanned items all the time. Bad for very important documents when you missed sending a page. I cannot recommend this product until I am confident on the functions and output, it is good prices but until I point the issue if would be better to buy a Canon, Brother or Xerox unit. I cannot I have been trying to contact customer service to no avail, maybe I just have a defective product or bad settings. ... show more

  • Small footprint full page scanner
I didnt have a lot of room on my desk for a scanner so this one fit the dimensions I had available. Easy to use and set up. I have been using it for about a month with no problems

  • Works for Simple Scans, but Duplex Back-Side Quality Is Limited
Plustek SmartOffice PS186 – Capable Hardware, Weaker Reverse-Side Duplex Quality The Plustek SmartOffice PS186 initially appears to be a well-built scanner suitable for home document and mail archiving. After extensive testing with multiple software options, my conclusion is that while the scanner is usable, it has a notable limitation with reverse-side duplex scan quality that may matter depending on your use case. From a hardware standpoint, the scanner feeds reliably with standard printer paper. I did experience occasional multi-page feeds when scanning thicker, coated mail, which is somewhat expected for consumer-grade scanners. My early issues with thin, partial strip scans during duplex scanning were resolved by switching away from the bundled DocAction II software. Using Windows Scan, VueScan, and NAPS2 eliminated that problem entirely, confirming that issue was software-related. However, after further testing, a consistent quality issue remains on the reverse side (page 2) of duplex scans. When scanning at typical DPI settings in grayscale or black-and-white, the back side of documents often appears washed out and lacking clarity. To achieve acceptable results, I must either increase the DPI significantly or scan in color mode, both of which greatly increase file sizes and reduce efficiency. This behavior is consistent across multiple scanning applications, which strongly suggests the limitation lies in the hardware or optical path used for reverse-side duplex scanning, rather than in the software. Bottom line: The PS186 can work well for single-sided scanning or duplex scanning when higher DPI or color settings are acceptable. For users who need efficient, high-volume duplex document archiving, the weaker reverse-side scan quality is a meaningful drawback and ultimately the reason I would hesitate to recommend this scanner. Note: I am not saying that all Plustek SmartOffice PS186 scanners will have this issue. This has been my experience with this particular unit. I hope others have a better experience if they choose to purchase this scanner. ... show more
