  • Easy to program, very sensitive with clear sound.
Style: WS1010 Handheld Analog Scanner
This receiver has good sensitivity. Its built in speaker is loud and clear. Programming it is so easy that you can get started using it without reading the manual but one can be easily downloaded from the manufacturer’s website if you need it. A printed manual is not included. It can store 400 channels, in 10 banks of 40. There are 153 channels pre-programmed to get started. It doesn’t have a cumbersome multi-function knob like another popular brand. Battery life is good. It comes with two battery holders, one for alkaline cells and one for rechargeable cells. The price was great for an excellent quality unit such as this. ... show more

  • Good scanner for the money. Limited frequency range.
Style: WS1010 Handheld Analog Scanner
I gave this scanner four stars. It's pretty good for $75 or so. I have more powerful scanners, even hand-helds, but they are also much more expensive. The good news is that the whistler is easy to learn to use. It is very fast, 40-stored channels per second, and 80 steps per second in search mode. It sips power, four AA batteries last a long time. I've run it four hours a day for over a week now and the low-battery indicator has not come on. The stock antenna is pretty good. I have third-party scanner antennas with BNC connectors, but they do not seem to do any better. The scanner will pick up anything from the Amateur 10 meter band down (or up depending on your viewpoint) to the amateur and utility 70-centimeter band, so 29 Mhz to 540 Mhz. The bad news is that there are many gaps in coverage. Some of this is forced on scanner manufacturers by the FCC, but oddly, even the amateur 220 Mhz band (1.25 meters in-between the 2-meter and 70-centimeter frequencies) band is not supported. This is probably my biggest gripe. The FM broadcast band (88-108 Mhz in the U.S.) is also not supported, but I have lots of radios covering these frequencies. There are 400 memory channels divided into 10 banks of 40 channels each. You may store any station in any memory location. In addition to user-assigned frequencies, the scanner has a built-in memory with the most common police, air, ship, fire, weather, and amateur frequencies nation (U.S.) wide. Pushing any one of the buttons dedicated to these bands will find stations for you, and you can store them in memory by pushing one button. This device will not follow trunked radio systems becoming ubiquitous in big cities across America. This is not, however, a criticism of the device. There are trunk-following scanners, but they are much more expensive. In the end, it is only 1/3 of the scanner I'd like, but easily does 90% of what I really need. For the price, that's great! ... show more

  • Plug in cord quit working.
Style: WS1010 Handheld Analog Scanner
June 9, 2018 - I purchased some used Bearcat scanners from ebay and compared the reception. The 1010 failed miserably. Whistler said they would replace the scanner so I sent it back. I received what is suppose to be a new one which had all my prior channels programmed in. It is just as bad if not worse than before. I'm giving up on this scanner. I've since purchased the TRX2 which works much better but way more money. I cannot recommend this scanner at all. April 28, 2018, I sent my scanner into Whistler which cost me shipping. It is still under warranty so they replaced the antenna connection and the plug in. It now works again however it won't pick up anything beyond about a mile of the radio towers. I'm very disappointed in this scanner and will be looking at other scanners to replace this one. Update: Changing my rating. The scanner started acting up last night. The squelch would not adjust down. Every Channel programmed in was as if the squelch was turned all the way up. It cleared up after a while but now I have very poor reception on most of the channels. I have multiple types of antennas but none of them help. I did contact Whistler on March 7th for the cord issue but have heard nothing back from them despite their reply email saying I would receive a call back with in 48 hours. I'm now very disappointed with this scanner. Purchased this in May 2017 and last week the plug in cord quit working. Luckily I had another one that works. The scanner works as expected but I did purchase a different antenna because the one that came with it didn't seem to pick up that well. Actually purchased 2 since I had no idea which to order. One broke shortly after I got it but the second one is good. ... show more

  • Simple, But I Use It More Than My $400 Scanner
Style: WS1010 Handheld Analog Scanner
I have a $400 scanner that has all the bells and whistles. Only problem is, programming it requires my laptop. Sure, I could do it by hand, but every time I try, I end up in some oddball mode that causes me to drop it back into my bag and pick up a paperback instead. This means it is really pretty useless to me anywhere other than around home. This radio is now my go-to travel scanner. No bells and whistles. No funky modes. It picks up everything I want to listen to. It doesn't do digital or trunking, but if I get that serious about wanting that functionality, I'll drag out the laptop. ... show more

  • Hard to program
Style: WS1010 Handheld Analog Scanner
I assumed that when you would scan it would pick up any station but that's not the case . Even with instructions giving me the channels for my area it still doesn't pick up anything other than the weather

  • Just What I Needed
Style: WS1010 Handheld Analog Scanner
I know most police and sheriff departments have gone to digital but the small town and county I’m in is still using analog. This scanner is exactly what I needed and it’s very easy to program and use. It can be used with 4AA batteries or plugged in an outlet and the reception is great! When using batteries they lasted about 2 weeks and I had it on pretty much 24/7. I highly recommend this scanner. ... show more
