Major design and quality issues
When it works, it is great and produces really good results... the problem is "when" is not often enough. 1.) The design is so bad and / or quality so poor that humidity/water will get into to hopper. The saw dust from the pellets will collect at the bottom of the hopper and gum up, which will lead to no more pellets feeding. Stupidly enough, there is no way to get to the auger to clean that up besides completely emptying the hopper, disassembling (unscrewing!!) the hopper assembly and then remove the junk, re-assemble everything and refill the hopper. Not sure who "designed" this mess, but he/she/that team should get fired on the spot. 2.) In the middle of a 12 hr. smoke, the electronic decided to throw an error and stopped heating. Had to finish in the oven, call their "support" which answered the phone after only 20 minutes in the wait queue and a replacement part (temp. probe) was sent for me to install. 3.) Temperature swings SIGNIFICANTLY. Was set to 250 and was at temperatures up to 390 and over 300 for longer periods (results were still good though). 4.) The display in the front got dim after about 4 days (using it twice...) and the plastic protection starts falling off. With all these quality and design issues, I do not recommend this smoker. While it is sturdy and heavy, I need a smoker that I can rely on and that does not require me to plan for constant repairs. I got the smoker brand new 3 weeks ago and the problems above all developed during that time. (oh, and yes, there was a cover on all the time when not smoking to prevent water from getting into the hopper....) Update: Was trying to use it the 4th time after the temperature probe was replaced by me (they only send you the parts, you do the labor part...). Temperature went over 400, shut down with ERH. Restarted the whole POS, same problem again and again and again. Summer sausage is burned at the bottom and will need to be thrown away. Wish I had never set my hand on this zero quality POS product.

Excellent product with an issue
Excellent product, easy to use, cooks and smokes great. I have concerns over surface imperfections on the top of the cabinet. Appears to possible corrosion under the finishes. I have contacted the manufacturer and submitted my concerns. I have not received a resolution to my concerns at the time of this review.

Continual Errors while smoking
**Update 3/1/21** Every single issue others have explained is accurate. We've recd a new temp probe as well as control board. The Pit Boss customer service gave us about half a dozen "must-do's" in order for the smoker to work correctly Example: Leave door open and let it warm up for 10 minutes on 200 degrees. Make sure that the pellet hopper is 3/4 full when smoking to avoid air gaps. The chimney cap needs to have 2 inch gap from top of stack to bottom of gold cap. They do not have service techs to help reinstall all the replacement parts, so that is on you. My Husband did finally get the smoker to work by trial and error but how anyone else would know to do all these little 'must-do's' is beyond me. I still won't buy this product again. We have yet to actually smoke an entire meal before having an issue with the smoker. It continually gives error codes resulting in the smoker completely shutting off. We have found that it smokes for about an hour and then will turn off. We trouble-shoot the errors our self, via their manual but that isn't helping. We've just submitted a case via the Pit Boss website to trouble shoot. We'll see how easy (or hard) it is to get this resolved. Buyer beware....

Phenomenal product. We have a 5 series and a couple of 7 series that get used almost daily. The 5 can hold 9 turkeys, and the 7 can hold 5 briskets, or a dozen pork butts, or.... Pellet capacity is more than enough for a long, full day of smoking (never filled it to the top- and I put in 40 pounds of pellets at time) Love the removable racks. You can load them in the kitchen and slide them in (easier than trying to stack in ribs 3 deep). The trick to these smokers is to smoke low and slow. We usually smoke well below 200 degrees (never over 225). It is NOT a grill - set it on smoke and let it do its thing. it imparts amazing smoke flavor, if you are patient. For most things (chicken, steaks, chops, etc.), we do a long smoke, and a quick finish on the broiler/grill to crisp things up. This is an outdoor appliance, but it can't take rain or high humidity with pellets in it. Keep it under cover, and empty the pellets (into a sealed bucket) if it is going to sit in humid weather. Emptying pellets is a breeze. There is a dump door at the bottom - open it and the pellets drop out. Only quibble - the water tray is not vented enough for high volume use. When smoking large cuts of pork/beef/turkeys, it is fine, but an acquaintance had issues trying to smoke 30 pounds of chicken wings on a 5 series because the combination of the "tight" tray and the high density of chicken didn't allow for enough air/heat circulation. Modifying the tray resolved it. I won't remove a star for that because that use is a pretty unusual case (not many people doing that volume on a 5), but if you are considering this unit for commercial use, just know that you need to mod the tray for high volume chicken.

So far so good. Good assembly instructions. Well built. It’s pretty big. I could probably have gone for a smaller model. I have used it a couple of times and things seem to work and have had a great outcome with the food. I made a couple beginner mistakes on first use and the temperature control was all over, dropping to 150 and then racing to 400 when on a 200 setting. It’s true that pit boss customer service is lousy. I emailed them with the temp control concerns and it took them 8 business days (11 total) to send a message back that was not very helpful and did not address all of my concerns. I figured out in the meantime that it was probably user error.
