  • My first chicken coop
Pattern Name: Double Nesting Box
I’ve had this coop for awhile now so I feel good about writing a review. It was fairly easy to put together, instructions were pretty clear. It was slightly miss made but it works, I love the fact that the roof opens up and the poop pan is a great idea but the house is a little miss made so the pan is hard to slide in and out. I think I have more chickens in it than it says it can hold but some are bantam breeds I have 13 chickens, 9 regular size and 4 bantam size. They have no problem all fitting inside the coop but most choose to roost on top of the coop at night. That’s fine because I have the coop setting up on concrete blocks and have built a tin shack around it to house the coop and all my fed buckets. I can’t really attest to the weather proofing because I did build a roof and walls around it for further protection from the elements. It’s been a good little coop for my purposes. ... show more

  • Poor Quality coop
Pattern Name: Double Nesting Box
Edit: I also want to say their customer service is horrible. I have been dealing with them to try to see if there is anyway we can be compensated due to the quality since it has been less 6 months and we are having to replace the coop. They only e-mail in the middle of the night (12-1am) so that you can’t actually have a conversation with them. I sent them photos of the coop. And at one point they asked if the coop arrived in the photographs. I asked them to further explain because obviously it arrived. They said they just needed me to say yes or no. So I said yes the coop arrived. Then they sent back a long e-mail about how since I said it arrived in that condition (I said no such thing) and I was outside my 30 window to report it that they couldn’t help me. They also said because I had made emergency modifications for the safety of my flock that I voided any chance at compensation. We were super excited about this coop, and the reviews we read were decent. However, we have had this product since March and we are already looking into replacing it. We have had to make numerous modifications including a new roof and new nesting box lids because they leaked, we have had to add supports to the nesting boxes because they are flimsy and sagged several inches (without a chicken in them) if not supported. The door also broke off and we had to use a board to secure it so it does fall off and allow the flock to escape or predators to get in. So it is no longer a functional door. Just spend the money and purchase a high quality coop or build one your self. We could have easily bought or built a quality coop with the time and money we have wasted on this coop trying to make it work. ... show more

  • Good coop for the money but be prepared to repair/upgrade a few things
Pattern Name: Double Nesting Box
This coop is a great value for the size and quality. I searched on many websites to find the best deal for a kit coop that would hold about 6 hens. This was an easy choice. I read the reviews saying that some areas need reinforcing and I agree completely. That said, I found the assembly to be very simple. My 6yo helped me the few times I needed an extra set of hands. A lot of it is held together with small trim nails and some of those pieces arrived broken. I just wood glued them back together. On that note, put every piece together with a generous amount of wood glue. It will make it much more sturdy. That's good advice for most self-assembled furniture. This coop should be pretty easy to clean and will hold 6 large hens comfortably. I live in the Houston area, so I'm more concerned with heat than cold. It should allow pretty good ventilation on warm nights but probably wouldn't offer much heat protection because the wood is very thin. Outside of the broken pieces I had to fix (which wasn't very hard) you will want to upgrade the little blocks used to keep from sliding out the poop tray from either side. That is pretty easy. The other thing I would improve involves the nesting boxes. The floors are removable to help with cleaning. That's a good thing. But they rest on a very narrow lip that I would not trust. Probalby not even with the weight of the chickens but I think it would also be pretty easy for a predator to get in through there as others have said would happen. I'd glue/nail a larger piece of wood on the bottom of that channel to give it more of an overlap. Maybe even a thicker board for them to nest on. I haven't done that yet but I will before I put my chickens in there. But all-in-all, short of building your own, this is a coop kit I would recommend. If that changes as I use it I will update this review. ... show more

  • Easy to Assemble BUT Low Quality Materials
Pattern Name: Double Nesting Box
Overall, the coop is “ok”. The coop on its own 3 star product. The positives: it has an excellent design. There are several ways to access various parts of the coop. Additionally, it is very easy to assemble. It can be assembled by one person in a few hours. A second person helping can significantly reduce the time required for assembly. The coop can adequately house 6-8 chickens. It is quite portable. Fully constructed, I am guessing it weighs no more than 30-40 pounds. The negatives: It uses low quality materials. The boards/frame are very thin (weak) and could be broken by a small child. With that in mind, be prepared to protect and fortify the structure. We are making several modifications in hopes that the structure will survive wind, rain, and snow. Even with modifications, I am not sure how many seasons the structure will last. ... show more

  • Not the best, not the worst.
Pattern Name: Double Nesting Box
The back door has really big gaps that will cause a draft. This makes the door useless since I will have to seal it up and the only option is to lose the function of that door. The nesting boxes look small and aren't that stable since there's nothing to support them in the center. I set a 10lb bumbbell on it and it was enough to bend the flooring, it's supposed to hold three hens? Several pieces arrived broken, split at the grain, this is something they allowed to leave the factory this way, so I'm guessing quality control isn't important to this company. All in all, it is a coop and for the price it is a decent size. I got this to house my brahmas and it looks like it will fit all four when they're fully grown. The nesting boxes are my main concern given that it was stressed from just 10lbs and one brahma hen is 9lbs. This would be excellent if you have a lot of bantams or small egg layers but maybe not so much for meat birds. ... show more
