  • Century Centurion booster pump replacement
Style: Old
I had a Century Centurion booster pump for 14 years before it died so I wanted to get another one to replace it but I couldn’t find one so I bought this Pentair and guess what?...it IS a Century Centurion pump! Says so right on the motor, hopefully it will last as long. It was easy to install for the DIYer. The pump comes set up for 220v, but can be changed to 110v. My electric connection to the pump has 3 wires, 1 red, 1 black, and 1 green (ground). I tested the red and black and it was 220 so no alterations needed. I didn’t use the connecting hoses that came with it, instead using the same hoses I had with new pvc connectors. It runs great and is quiet so far...if anything changes I will update my review. I also purchased the extended warranty. ... show more

  • Easy replacement if existing model in place
Style: Old
I had an existing model that needed to be replaced. We use this pool cleaner all of the time. At least 3 pool seasons since we bought the house with the pool and this pump on most days. Was not difficult to remove at all. Probably took me 30 mins to remove the old pump and swap in the new pump. Connecting the wires on the new one was also very easy. I just followed what was done with the old model. I also took pictures of the wiring with my phone before I disconnected it in case I forgot. I was surprised how easy it was to do. Turned the new pump on, and it worked great. ... show more

  • Delivered quickly in good packaging and was able to do the installation myself
Style: Old
Bought this as a 'like for like' replacement for my previous pump which burnt out because I didn't follow instructions only to run it when the pool filter pump was running (it's not self priming and needs the main pool pump to push the water through or the bearings seize). Delivered quickly in good packaging and was able to do the installation myself. Take photos of the old pump and wiring configuration before you start disassembling. Was about a 45 minute job to swap the pumps out including some cutting a glueing of pipework. As long as you have the right tools (simple screwdriver set and an adjustable wrench) and a bit of practical handy work sense you can do this yourself. ... show more

  • Alas, Pentair failed me!
Style: Old
We had been using Polaris PB4-60 (older model) for about 10 years. The motors typically last 2-3 years. When the last one started screaming and the neighbors complained, we decided to try the Pentair LA01N. The reviews had been good and our pool guy also said that it was a better motor. So we ordered one from Amazon. In appearance, the Pentair looks almost identical to the Polaris. The volute is slightly different but the motor part is indistinguishable. I suspect that it is probably the same motor that is sourced by the two companies independently. This was disappointing. I expected the two motors to be noticeably different. The installation was easy enough. The quick connect connectors are the best. I had to buy a PVC coupler and bushing to convert one side so that the quick connect could be installed. With much anticipation, we turned on the motor. The motor did not sound as smooth as I was expecting. There seemed to be a rattling noise. After letting it run for an hour, I went over to check and smelled a slight burning smell. I touched the motor housing and it felt hot to the touch. I then used a laser infrared thermometer and found that the casing was at 150F. Called Pentair tech support and they advised that I replace the motor asap. Amazon was amazing as always. The return was super easy and the replacement motor arrived within 3 days.. Went through the effort of removing the defective motor and installing the new one. Turned it on only to find that this one was making a pulsing noise when running and also making a periodic scratchy noise. I decided that I would always be unhappy with the motor's performance and so returned it for a full refund. This time I ordered the Polaris PB4-60 - the newer model. I don't get why Polaris would redesign the motor and keep the same exact model number. How difficult would it have been to call it PB5-60 or PB4-70? Anyways, went through the effort of installation the third time and the third time was a charm. The motor runs quietly enough and the casing stays at around 128F which is the right operating temperature. I am happy for now but very frustrated with Pentair's quality control. I can forgive getting a bad piece once but twice in a row is too much. I was able to install the motors myself but imagine the hassle and the cost if I had paid a pool guy to put the motors in. ... show more

  • No complaints... but after 41 months heres my update.
Style: Old
UPDATE AUG 19, 2019: 41 months in and... Noticed leaves on the bottom of my pool. I checked the booster pump and only got a humming noise. I checked the capacitor and it reads 00.82 and should read 25.00 +/- 1.0 µF. Replaced with a new one, runs fine. Since I could not find the original part - 628308-405 I installed a Dayton 2MEC8C. That's 41 months, 3 hr a day = 3,690 hours total run time. Our Century Centurion pump went down without warning, just a humming noise. Not sure how old it was but came with the house we bought 5 years ago. Since the motor still spun I replaced the capacitor thinking that would fix things but it didn't help. Glad to have found a replacement here on amazon and with Prime with 1 or 2 day shipping. This Pentair looks almost identical to our old one, in fact everything pretty much is except the base. I was able to hook up the new pump in about an hour, including replacing the electrical run from the motor to the sub panel. Install went well, no glitches and didn't notice anything different in performance or noise. It sounds exactly like the Centurion. I hope to get another 5 years of service. ... show more

  • Great Replacement
Style: Old
I don't take the time to write a lot of reviews on Amazon, but felt the need on this item. Great pump, super quiet. Install was very easy. The fittings were much nicer to work with than my original Polaris pieces. I have to say for only being $60 more than the replacement motor alone, I'm glad I got the whole kit. Time savings in messing with removing and re-installing the old pump assembly as I did last time, new fittings and hose made it an even better deal - it was so nice and easy to have everything new. If you are handy enough to replace your own motor, this kit is highly recommended. Got the pump delivered on a Sunday to boot with 2-day shipping. Nice! ... show more
