I used to have a Hayward DE bump filter and it was just a nightmare. I had inherited it from the previous owner of my house, and during my first sprint opening in the new house, I had an algae bloom and it was just performing very poorly requiring constant attention. I upgraded the filter and the pump (went with a variable pump). The filter ran great despite the algae and allowed me to focus on eliminating the algae with chlorine rather that constantly bumping, washing, and filling up DE. I highly recommend using the Pentair 261050 HiFlow valve with it, it just provides more options down the road. As a side note, there is a misconception that this filter can be used without DE. Nowhere in the manual it says you can do so, and I called Pentair who confirmed it is not meant to be. This is not a hybrid cartridge / DE filter. Yes it has cartridges, but they need to be coated with DE. My water is crystal clear, the filter eats everything and does not even blink. I think it's good practice to oversize pool equipment not to have to constantly baby sit. My pool is of average size (20000 gallons) and this filter is perfect for it.

This is probably the finest D.E. filter on the market - so why the one star rating? Because of Pentair's lousy installation and user's guide. What a joke. Whomever prepared this booklet needs to be fired. The booklet consists of 50% safety warnings; 10% product sales; 20% maintenance instructions; 10% parts listings; and 10% installation guide consisting mainly of repeated warnings that the filter will blow up if not installed properly.... but nowhere do they tell you how to install it - except for useful comments like: "Only a qualified service person should install the Quad D.E. filter" and "Make all plumbing connections in accordance with local plumbing and building codes." But nowhere do the installation instructions say to connect port "A" to pump and port "B" to return line. If you use the HiFlow Valve Kit the same useless instructions accompany that extra piece too. My favorite warning is this one: "When any part of the circulation system is serviced, air can enter the system and become pressurized. Pressurized air can cause the lid to be blown off which can result in severe injury, death or property damage:" REALLY?? So let's just say that my vacuum line on my automatic pool cleaner gets a hole in it and it sucks in a bunch of air; or, the water level in my pool drops too low and the skimmer sucks air - and I'm at work and no one else is at home - or worse, one of my kids is playing in the pool and the system sucks in air. Are you telling me that the filter is going to blow apart and splatter my kids all over the yard? SERIOUSLY? Don't you think that there should be a safety valve built into the filter to prevent the buildup of excessive air pressure so that it doesn't blow up --- EVER?? The bottom line is this: I installed the filter and HiFlow Valve Kit without incident, although it would have been helpful to have had a real installation guide instruction to show exactly how everything was supposed to be hooked up. With a few proper instructions, installation is really so easy that a monkey could do it. A YouTube video would have been very helpful too. Once I "quickly" purged the filter of any trapped air and I charged it with DE, the filter cleaned my green, totally gross, pool into sparkling clear pool water in just over 24-hours. It was very impressive and a welcome change from the old Hayward cartridge filter that it replaced that NEVER got the water as clear as it is now. (...and the Hayward was put in by a "qualified installer"). The saving grace is that there are stickers all over the filter giving instructions on how to use the filter, which was most helpful once everything was installed. This would have easily been a five star product had the instruction guide been worth a hoot.... and I didn't have to live in constant fear that some day I'm going to come home and find that my house had been blown away because the filter somehow got air into it.

Great deal on Amazon. I received it in a timely manner and delivered to my front door. I have an 38’ x 18’ pool and this filter is doing an awesome job. I wish I would have purchased sooner. My pool is much cleaner. This has made my life a lot easier. Great filter!

Excellent filter, I have the 100, it is a bit over kill, but I got it at an excellent price and my pool is now pristine. Highly recommend this filter, you can use it as a D.E. or cartridge filter. I have it as a D.E. now, but after my next cleaning , i will see how it does as a cartridge filter.

Box looked beatup , hence the label damage. However the top was fine , leads me to believe the filter was already damaged when packaged. Opened up the filter today to see the the filters and understand more , before installation. However, the screen on center tube was smashed and tube isn't threaded , therfore it was just placed on top of it . The part on top that holds the filters is cracked in half and filters are smashed on the tops as if it was droped or something was dropped on top of it . Very disappointed! I looked forward to installing this , today .

The filter works great, my pool is cleaner than ever. Seems to be easy to backwash and clean but haven't had to do that yet after three months of running. Only problem was the packaging. The box is not strong enough for the weight and size of the filter and the pressure valve came damaged. I did not want to return the whole unit so I had to buy a new valve.
