I finally gave up on the Oxo can opener after about the 7th try. After completing what I thought to be the full procedure and having failure on every can but one, I started to initiate a return to Amazon. Before completing the return process I decided to review use of the can opener one more time. I found a YouTube video entitled "Oxo Smooth Edge Can Opener" and learned what I had failed to do each time. The can opener had cut the can lids each time I used it but I had failed to employ the small grasping pliers built into the side to remove the cut lid, so it appeared that the Oxo had not worked. Once I used the pliers each subsequent can was smoothly cut and the lid lifted off easily. The problem was with me, not the can opener. However, I dropped one star on the "Easy to use" rating because I think that last little detail of use was not adequately explained with the packaging, and it certainly wasn't obvious. ... show more

Previous can openers of similar type from other manufactures became dull after a short time in use. After a while they wouldn't open a can like they did when they were new. The cutting blade became dull. This is my first OXO can opener I owned it just a short while. I bought it because It is somewhat larger than the previous can openers, and seems more robust. This can opener is quite a bit better than most others I've used. It's a bit weird as you attach it from the top instead of the side, so it cuts the can open differently than I'm used to. But I feel like this is an intentional design choice, because it seems to work a lot better. I like it a lot.

It's on the large size but that wouldn't be a factor for most people i would guess. feels solid and since you're not cutting down into the can but around the top it comes into less food contact. Easy to remove the top as is than press down one side of the loose cut top to lift the other side up to remove the top. With tuna fish for example it basically cuts off the top without cutting down into interior of the can and coming in contact with the food. Washing it with soap to eliminate the odor is less of an issue with this opener. ... show more

I have opened cans with many implements over the years, many of which had no business being near a can. Not any longer. I needed a can opener that appropriately reflected my love of classical music and impressionist art, and luckily Oxo specializes in just those sort of kitchen devices. Anyway the opener itself. It is covered in smooth and rubbery black plastic, enhacing grip. Its principle of operation is different than any other opener I have ever used, to the point of confusing me for a good ten minutes. It cuts AROUND THE SIDE of the can, NOT THE TOP. Looking for the telltale mark along the glazing left me puzzled, and on the brink of returning the device. However that's what the little jaws are for! Grab the top lip of the can after you've gone around the whole thing and PULL. The entire top will come off like a cap, which is very satisfying. You can even put it back on as a lid, but there are several reasons I wouldn't recommend doing so. 1. The edge IS sharp, and can cut you if you aren't careful. 2. If you put the top back on, it's visually indistinguishable from an unopened can! However it needs to be refrigerated and consumed within a few days or it WILL go bad. Anyway, once you "get" it, it's the best can opener, IN THE WORLD! Perfect for when you (or your help) needs to open a can to feed the masses (or pets). ... show more

I. have arthritis in my hands and it has gotten to the point where I always have to ask my husband to open cans for me. I have many other OXO products and decided to try this can opener. Wow! It works like a charm and I had no problem opening a can with this ingenious design. Also - no more cut fingers retrieving lids from opened cans. This opener removes the lid from the side of the can and leaves no sharp edges. The one thing that will require a work-around is draining tuna in a can. Because there is no lid to push down inside the can, I'll have to drain tuna and canned chicken with a strainer. This design is well worth that small sacrifice.     • Love where it cuts, but a bit bulky for my hands

This is a great can opener, but the size of the handles makes it a bit bulky to hold while trying to open a can. I have carpel tunnel and it makes my hands tired if I have to open mor than two or three cans. The side grips that pick up the lid are also a bit difficult for our older children to try to use, as they aren't very easy to see where you are putting them when trying to get them to grip the top of the lid. Where it cuts the can is great, as it keeps us from cutting ourselves when using the cans.
