  • An honest review from an unbiased perspective
I previously wrote a review about this banjo a few months back, where I explained that it seemed like the perfect banjo to me. I have changed my rating from 5 stars to 4. I will be completely honest with you, so that you have all the information you need to make your decision about buying this banjo. For beginners, it is definitely a worthwhile investment. It has a resonator, 22 frets, a nice armrest, and it looks nice; however, its looks are slightly deceiving. While the seller advertises a "30 Bracket Cast Aluminum Tone Ring," I will clarify that there is no tone ring on this banjo. The rim and flange constitute one large aluminum piece. The parts of the banjo are kind of cheap, to be honest. Taking off the resonator will reveal that the banjo is pretty cheaply made, with roughly-ground edges and machine markings. I will say, though, that the mylar head and the spalted maple peghead/resonator are very nice. The banjo itself sounds decent. All in all, if you are considering getting your first banjo, without a doubt I will say that this banjo is definitely the way to go. If you're starting to advance to the next level, please consider something that will help you grow as a banjo-player: a quality item that you will always be eager to pick up and play. ... show more

  • If you want good quality look elsewhere.
At first glance this is a beautiful banjo, upon opening the box I was thrilled! I had the banjo set up and playing that night. I've been playing it when ever I get the chance for 3 days now. My observations thus far.. the spalted maple resonator looks like plastic because it is, I cant dent it with my fingernail, and is matte finished not gloss like the pictures. The action in the neck is very high and the quality of the head that is on is very poor. I have already broken a string after just 3 days of playing. For the money I would have expected much much better quality. I am thinking about sending this one back to get a banjo that is actually made of quality materials. ... show more

  • Important info
This Oscar Schmidt banjo (5 string) not only looks and sounds beautiful but it also is very easy to set up and tune. The only draw back is that it needs to be tuned every week or so. I love it. (To learn songs I use happy banjo dude on YouTube. He has great music and even better tabs. If you can’t read banjo music he’ll explain it, it’s pretty simple.) ... show more

  • Nice banjo but surprised it wasn't all put together
He loves the banjo look but was very disappointed that it wasn't put together. he is still struggling with some of the set up. We may have to resort to taking it to be professionally set up.

  • Inaccurate fret board requiring high action.
Nice looking, but that was were it ended. The fret board was very uneven requiring very high string height, and yet with that, the high notes, up the board, were dead sounding. The fret edges were rough with sharp burrs. This instrument would require much work to get it right indicating a lack of quality control by the manufacturer. I returned it. ... show more

  • I love this instrument
I already play an acoustic and bass guitars. Banjo was totally new for me. I love this instrument. I've been playing it an hour or more every day since it arrived and have already begun playing it on stage with our Praise Band. It arrived in perfect condition, was easy to set up and is nothing short of fun to play. ... show more

  • Very nice banjo for a “back porch” picker
Just what I wanted. Very nice banjo for a “back porch” picker. After years of playing other stringed instruments I decided to take up the banjo. Experienced players I asked to rate this one said I did well.
