Honestly, I was genuinely surprised at how solid this kayak rack is—especially for the price. I had previously bought a similar one from Hyper Tough at Walmart (on clearance for around the same price, usually $50–$60), and this rack easily matches—or even exceeds—that in terms of quality. What really sets this one apart is the accessories it comes with. It includes two crankable tie-down straps for the front and back of the kayak, plus two cam straps—way more than I expected for the price. The materials feel more durable, and the overall design seems better thought-out compared to the Hyper Tough version. Edit (after installation): Installation was a bit of a hassle. The nuts were tough to screw in—even though they included a helpful installation tool, my forearms definitely got a workout. The lug nuts used to secure the rack to the car were also difficult to twist into place, which I suspect is due to the screws being manufactured slightly oversized. It still installed just fine, but it took noticeably longer than my other kayak rack.

This is my first unsolicited review in over 10 years of buying on Amazon. The A01 Kayak Roof Rack is a very well built J-style kayak rack, better than a different model I had to return. I particularly like the full width bottom bracket which secures them to the cross bar with 4 bolts rather than only 2 like most models.

Easy to install. Would recommend treating like lug nuts when tightening - tighten carriage bolts and nuts diagonally to ensure you are still square when all is said and done. The most difficult part was the install on my crossbars since they are oval - you have to play around with the plastic caps - diagonal again, and make sure your J-bars don’t shift. It came with four foam pads with adhesive stickers on the back, but they weren’t pieces in the parts list, and there were no instructions on what they are supposed to be used for. Overall, good J-bars. I didn’t use the ratchet straps that it came with as I had my own. I’d recommend testing out the hardware on the straps before using it on your kayak / in motion. Update and IMPORTANT TIP: I have had them mounted for a week or two. I’ve used my kayak twice, and the hooks were left on when it rained, and the bolts are already rusting. I’ll be taking the hooks off and buying galvanized nuts and bolts to replace the ones that came with the hooks. Hardware should not rust this easily, but you get what you pay for.

What can I say, you get what you pay for. The kayak j-hook mounts themselves are ok. They were a pain in the you know what to put together. After using them once to transport my kayak I checked them and they had came fairly loose. I tightened them really well but they still came loose. Now, onto the straps and line tie-downs for the bow and stern; DO NOT USE THESE!!! I highly recommend not using any of the tie downs that come with this mount. Every stop I made I checked them and they were always loose. Then, on my way home the bow line came off and my kayak slammed down to the side of my car. The side view mirror housing in my car was knocked off into the road. I was able to recover it and put it back on but now it’s all scratched up. This could have been way worse had it happened in an interstate. Pleas be careful and use quality straps, not the ones that come with this product because it’s too dangerous.

The instructions were pretty self explanatory, assembly was easy and big shock they actually fit my 3 inch Mont Blanc Aero cross bars. A lot of J racks don’t so I’m happy with this purchase however I am confused as the pictures show 3 inch oval cross rail but the description says up to 2.5 inch so I’ll be back to update this review if the performance is not up to par with a kayak on them. Tip - don’t over tighten any screws until you have them all in place. Tightening them down as you go means the last two won’t align. Item stated that it would fit my style roof rack however when fully tightened it had a gap of approx 1/8 inch. Had to use hard rubber mat cutout as a filler for it so it wouldn't be completely loose. Does not come assembled as it says it does.

I received the rack this afternoon. I had no trouble assembling it. I used a 13mm extended socket instead of the wrench provided with the rack. This made it much easier to assemble. It took about 30-40 minutes to assemble, but I was not in a hurry. Instructions were easy to follow. I was somewhat concerned about the rack fitting on my Thule aero bars, but it fit just fine. After installing the rack and mounting my kayak on the rack, I drove about 30 miles to get some groceries for a kayak camping trip I'm going on in a few days. Boat was rock-solid in the rack and the rack didn't shift at all. The straps that were included with the rack were exactly the right length to hold the boat in place. There were extra washers and locknuts included in the hardware which was nice. All in all, I'm a very happy customer. Update... Returned from a kayak camping trip to the Sierras (about 200 miles each way.) Rack was rock solid all the way. Drove at the speed limit (might have exceeded the limit a few times, possibly). No problems with boat or rack. Had some nasty cross winds across the Central Valley and one of the passes through the Coast Range but the rack and boat stayed firmly in place. Still a very happy customer.
