Description

I built my life on my belief in justice. Until the day the system proved me wrong. Now I’m back on Hatterwick Island with nothing left—no career, no credibility, and no illusions about the law I once trusted. The only thing heavier than the guilt I carry is knowing I once turned my back on a man who didn’t deserve it.Rios Carrera.Twelve years ago, my cousin disappeared, and he was the last one to see her alive. I believed the whispers that he was responsible. I made him the villain of the story—and he has every reason to hate me for it.But when a graduate student vanishes and the police insist she left of her own accord, Rios is the only one willing to look deeper. What starts as a search for the truth drags us into something darker than either of us imagined.Reluctant allies become something far more dangerous. Because the closer we get to uncovering what’s been buried on this island for decades, the more I realize justice isn’t black and white…and the man I once condemned may be the only one I can trust with my life—and my heart. • Mystery about girls being taken from the Outer Banks
Format: Kindle
The disappearance of another girl on Hatterwick Island cranks up the urgency to determine what really happened 12 years earlier and whether someone continues to prey on local young women. Madden and Rios have both returned home after experiencing some professional adversity - Madden as a District Attorney and Rios as military police. The pair have history - when the original girl went missing, Rios was accused - with no evidence - of being involved and Madden assumed the local police were right. When she apologizes and asks for his help, they agree to team up to try to find the missing girl. This is very fast paced and suspenseful. I couldn't stop turning the pages. When the cops refuse to investigate, this couple digs in to find out what really happened. Without access to official law enforcement channels, they need to find and interview witnesses, check out cyber trails, and get the other Wayward Sons and their partners involved. As they get closer to answers, their lives are at risk. Both main characters are smart, principled and determined. There's definitely chemistry but the emphasis of the book is on the mystery versus the romance. While the book doesn't exactly end on a cliffhanger, there are lots of open questions and you will need to read the final book in the series to find out what's really going on. This is not a standalone; the original crime was introduced earlier in the series and important discoveries were made in the preceding book. ... show more

  • Family, home and peace
Format: Kindle
The Wayward Brothers and Sisters are getting to the bottom of this mystery and we will finally know the truth. While solving the mystery that has been a part of their lives or too many years they are finding family, love and peace. As much as this was a love story with a happy ending between Rios and Madden this was also a story of Rios finally finding his home on Hatterwick Island. Madden also had to learn to trust that people who truly love you only want you to be happy and don’t care about titles and positions. Madden and Rios both believe in justice and doing what is right and that is what leads to a deeper bond and ultimately them finding love and a home with each other. I really enjoyed this book in the series and can’t wait for the end but also I want more. This series is a series of the family we choose and the home we make with them. ... show more

  • redemption and connection
Format: Kindle
This is Rios and Madden’s story. Hatterwick is still recovering from the trauma of the murder and blackmail, now we have a missing grad student and an investigation that is stirring up trouble. It was good to see Rios as the strong man we already knew, and Madden is strong, but vulnerable. There are threats, attempted murder and the uncovering of dark secrets on the island that are going to have dangerous repercussions. Woven through this is the slow connection that grows between Rios and Madden, with strong support from the other Wayward Sons and their partners. I can’t wait for Jace’s story which will hopefully tie off all the strings and solve the mystery of the missing women and who the bad guys are. ... show more

  • slow burn is so good
Format: Kindle
Madden and Rios are both back on Hatterwick Island after having their careers fall apart. Before, they weren't exactly friends - he was an informal suspect in her cousin's disappearance, and she believed the (without evidence) things everyone was saying about him. But now, they're working together on a case that seems to have close ties to her cousin's disappearance. They're finding things on this island that have been buried, are coming to light. And the two of them are growing closer every day, so close that Rios is on the alert, ready to jump in and save her when things get really bad. Rio and Madden's slow burn is so good. Their feelings evolve from wariness to interest to something infinitely stronger. Slow burn can be dare I say it, boring, but with this couple, there's so much else going on that the slow burn makes sense. I actually appreciate their slow burn. For one, it's not boring, their feelings are very obvious, as is their chemistry, and the overarching case is just as important, and blends naturally with the evolving relationship. This series just keeps bringing up more questions about the disappearance of Gwen (Madden's cousin), giving us some answers, but also making us impatient to finally know everything. I hope those answers are coming in the final book, when Jace's story drops. ... show more

  • Rios and Madden
Format: Kindle
This series just keeps getting better and better! Rios and Madden came from opposite sides of the island and were anything but friends as children. Both leave the island but circumstances conspire to draw them back, causing them both to re-evaluate their old opinions. They end up working together to solve a missing person case that blows wide open. The characters and dialogue are well-written with an enthralling plot. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of this series in the final book. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Wow!
Format: Kindle
I so liked this installment in the Wayward Sons series! The twists and turns and how the mystery of the island is unfolding is full of suspense! Slow burn romance that enhances but doesn't overtake the mystery. Cannot wait for Jace's story.
