  • handy tool that all car owners should have in their glove compartments
We have 2007 Honda Pilot with over 140K miles on it and the check engine light comes on once in a while. We took it to the shop in panic and they told us that it needs to replace one of the catalytic converters, which will cost $2K including labor. I really didn't want to spend that much money because we won't even get $2K trade in value for that car. The mechanic was nice and honest enough to let me know that I can still drive it indefinitely without any issue so he reset the check engine light for me and I took the car back without replacing the catalytic converter. Now, my only dilemma was what to do if the check engine light comes on again? How would I know if it's the same catalytic converter warning or something new and more serious since the car is old and is reaching the limit. After researching, I learned about the OBD2 scanner for the first time last year and purchased a cheap one but now I'm buying this one, which has a lot more feature and better screen and buttons, for my wife's new car. This is so easy and simple to use that any one who knows how to plug in USB port can use it. In face, the most difficult part is locating the ODB2 connector port in your car, which has nothing to do with this scanner. I had to get close to the floor to see it just above the accelerator pad but it has a matching groove on one side so there's only one way to plug it in. This OBD2 scanner is more advanced that the one I bought last year and has on-board monitor test, I/M readiness, EVAP tests, and even O2 sensor test. It's great to have this in your car in case you see the check engine light so you know what the problem is before taking it to the shop and pay hourly rate, not to mention you would know if the mechanic is telling the truth or not (potentially not get ripped off for $$$). Highly recommend this to all car owners! Please note that while the scan will work even if the engine is on, it won't clear the code and the check engine light while the engine is on. Therefore, it's better to use the scanner while the car's ignition is ON (two key turns) WITHOUT running the engine. Hope this was useful... and if it was, please click on the helpful button below. • Affordable and practical code reader, five stars
I can diagnose the basic engine-related problems wherever I am, whether a freeway shoulder in the middle of nowhere or a driveway. By reading the error codes and perform other obd2 functions, I get to realize whether it’s safe to drive the car continuously, or I should go to a mechanic or call a tow immediately to prevent further damage. The diagnostic information is easy to understand. When I detect some minor problems, I can also fix it on my own. The check engine light blinked on yesterday. According to the diagnostic information (DTCs, Live data, freeze frame, etc.) from this code reader, I knew the loose gas cap cause the light and the excessive emission. I just tightened the gas cap and erased the DTC, the check engine light was off soon. Love its small size. Great for taking and carrying. When not in use, It can be put in the toolbox easily. Overall, it’s a good product for those who would like to carry out a basic analysis of their cars. Recommended. ... show more

  • This is my new daily carry scan tool.
I am normally very weary of inexpensive (cheap) scan tools, as I have used everything from the ELM327 to the handheld Autel scanners, to the Maxisys Tablet scanners, and the cheap ones usually lack access to most multiplexed or independent systems such as the ABS or the TCM. I needed a scan tool to access transmission codes which my current scanner did not have access to. Immediately upon hooking this scan tool to the OBDII connector, it turned on and displayed a very simple to use interface. It even gives step by step instructions in case you haven't used a scan tool before. I was able to use it to get my transmission DTCs and perform the repairs and erase the codes promptly. I am very pleased with this purchase, and will be carrying this lightweight but robust scan tool with me daily from this point. For the money, you won't likely find a more capable and simple scan tool. ... show more

  • Very Impressed
I don't know half the stats on the live data that it shows, but I don't have to. This unit saved me from buying a car that had the codes cleared. I also took the time to understand how to read short and long term vehicle trims, which was very helpful as well. Got this while it was on sale recently and I must say it's probably the only scanner I will never need. It covers the basics very well and I'm happy. I have a cheap Autel scanner as well which I paid the same price for, but this one is completely next level in the data you can pull from it. Exceeds expectations for what I paid. Also, it easily fits in your pocket, which makes it a great unit to bring along when looking at used cars. ... show more

  • Doesn't read airbag or VSC codes
I ordered this device to evaluate an airbag light on my dashboard. There are ZERO instructions provided so you have to hunt the internet to decipher what appears to be very straightforward navigation controls. Much to my disappointment, when I navigated to "Diagnose," the instrument displayed a message that there were no codes - even though my airbag warning light is as bright as the sun on my instrument panel. I also have a VSC warning light on and similarly, this warning code seems to be invisible to this instrument. Very disappointed. ... show more

  • Great scanner, accurate
This ODBII scanner has save me a lot of money by not only correctly identifying the cause of issues but by also correctly identifying the specific part that needs replacing. In my case it identified specific failed oxygen & fuel sensors, valves, and other components. I asked my mechanic for a rough estimate after I had replaced one of the failed sensor valves and was told it would cost about $350.00, if no other issues were encountered. It cost me $27.00 for the replacement part and took about 20 minutes to do the repair. Definitely a recommended product. ... show more
