  • A Great Chair - with a couple caveats
Color: Grey
UPDATE, 12/20/20: [See my initial review below for specific pros & cons.] I ended up returning this chair, for one reason and one reason only - SEAT DEPTH. Buying an ergonomic chair was, for someone like me with a bad back - a long overdue move. I had the Nouhaus for about a week before I got it packed up and returned to Amazon, but literally after the 2nd day I was sitting in it, it had relieved the worst of my symptoms. I often have to toughest time in the mornings. Getting out of bed can be a challenge and it usually takes 20-30 minutes or more before I can loosen it up. With the Nouhaus chair, I was waking up relatively pain free. That's a miracle! As I said in the initial review, I'm 6'2" with long legs. I like having support all the way to my knees, or as close as I can get it. After getting the chair, I went to their site where, after poking around, I finally saw that the TOTAL seat depth is only 16.3". You also lose 2-3" because of the lumbar support, which obviously prevents accessing the entire seat depth. Nouhaus would do everyone a favor by including their website illustration showing seat depth on the Amazon page as well. They don't. If they did, I would not have made this mistake. Other than that complaint, it is a beautiful chair and a great value for the money. So if you are 6' or less, you will likely love this chair. It's just not made for big [tall] people. ORIGINAL REVIEW: I JUST got this chair and put it together. So this is very much a first impressions review. I will update after a few weeks of use when I see how my back is feeling. PROS: First and foremost, it's a beautiful chair. Solid construction, everything so far appears to be top-notch for the price point. Armrests have 3-direction adjustments - up/down; forward/back; and swivel out/in. Love that. Mesh fabric is very nice...and I am not a mesh fabric chair fan. My most comfortable chair ever was a leather affair I got at Staples for $110 or so. It had a deep seat, high back and was great for taking naps. As a writer, I consider this one of the most important features a chair can have. Shipping was faaaaasssst! The chair was due on Wednesday. It arrived Monday morning instead, and I put it together (it was easy-peasy) when I got home this afternoon. My one "complaint," if you can call it that, about assembly is that the directions specify a "Gas Lift Cover" (ill. 14) that goes over the Gas Lift. However....there IS NO ILLUSTRATION #14, and there were no extra parts left over. I'm assuming they made some design change and - perhaps - are using old instructions. Hell if I know. It works fine. If I hit the lever to raise the chair and am launched through the ceiling with the force of a Titan missile, I'll report back. CONS: I have three initial negatives, both of which I knew I would have going in and which I think I would have with almost every chair. Most important is the seat depth. I am 6'2" with long legs and the seat lacks proper depth for someone my size. If you are 6' and under, you will probably be fine. The NOUHAUS site does say that the seat is 16.3" deep and the chair is best for people up to 6'1". I prefer chairs that extend nearly to my knees. I probably should have listened and purchased another chair, but this one had a lot of other things going for it. There are other chairs with deeper seats - 18", even 19". I could use AT LEAST an extra inch here; two would be fantastic. I spent WEEKS looking at different chairs, but this chair checked off so many boxes that I bit the bullet on seat depth. The second con goes hand in hand with #1. The lumbar support isn't adjustable. That's true with MOST of the chairs out there; if I wanted adjustable tension, it was probably going to cost a pretty penny more. I was hoping it would be flexible enough that I could scooch back deeper into the seat, but it's just a bit too stiff for that. All of this goes to the fact that I have a really, really bad back. Ten years of international level ski racing, 25 years of near daily basketball and a lifetime of golf have smashed my discs until they look like a piece of copy paper on x-rays. Pile a partially formed sacrum (from birth) that has bone rubbing on bone on top of that and it all adds up to some mornings when I can barely get out of bed. So.....I relented and got this chair. I'll let you know how the back feels in a month. It seems like a great chair so far; if I was two inches shorter, I'd probably be ecstatic. If you are 6' or under, you probably will be, too. ... show more

  • Quality and comfort - a chair that will last
Color: Blue
So far I am so glad I spent a little more than what I first intended. I found a great deal on this chair, but it was still more expensive than my initial price range. The look, quality, and comfort of this chair seem to be well worth it so far. I want to give extra credit and appreciation that the delivery of the chair was sooner than expected and early in the day. I was so ready to replace my old office chair. I wanted a chair that would support my back and the chair back has the lumbar support in the right place for me. I also wanted a chair that would give me comfort when sitting for long hours. My butt felt so good, as I settled into the seat. I didn't want a large, cushy, leather chair, but more of a working office chair. I wanted a chair that would hold up over time and not have cushioning or material that would easily breakdown over time. My old office chair had the vented material for the back, but not the seat. I liked the venting on the back and felt that a vented seat would be good also. I never liked how seat padding seams to wear down over time. I had already added additional padded cushion to the old chair. I think that the seat on the new chair should hold up. We will see. I like that the chair back has adjustment so that it can recline and lock in place at a few different positions. It doesn't go to a full recline, but I don't want to fall asleep in my chair. The head rest is good for added support when working on the computer for hours. The head rest adjusts up and down, so you can find the best area on your head or neck you want to support. It does not adjust forward, but you can swivel it slightly up or down. The arm rests adjust up and down, as you would expect. The top also swivels in or out slightly. The arm pads are not soft and cushy. They have cushion, but it is firm. They should hold up over time. The chair comes with two sets of wheels. You can install the standard caster type wheels or the upgraded blade wheels. I choose to use the blade wheels. They make the chair roll easily on my laminate floor. They are smooth and quiet. Of course, you have seat height adjustment, as needed. With the blade wheels on, I think the seat height is perfect for me. But I am 5' 6. I might raise it just a bit. A shorter person would probably want to use the caster wheels. The instructions are a bit weak on the explanation. I did have to remove a couple things after installing them. The gotchas are that there is an arrow next to the "Front" designation on the seat mechanism. The R/L arm rest designation refers to when the chair is upright and not in the upside down installation position. The chair was packed in a manageable box and all the parts were packed very well. Many of the parts were packed firmly in foam. The bolts were in a plastic package and they gave you one extra of each size/type. Overall, I think this is the best working office chair that I have used, both in the office and working from home. ... show more

  • Good but not great
Color: Black
This was my daily home office chair for 2.5 years. It worked great in that time, but unfortunately it seems the seat has broken in so much I'm not getting the support I used to. I am starting to have back pain in my lower lumbar area. Will be looking for a different chair that lasts mor the 4 to 5 year range ... show more
