  • Great coffee maker!
Style: Glass Carafe
This is a terrific coffee maker. I have had several over the years, and my last one was just a basic Mr. coffee because I have never been very impressed with the $50-$70 line of coffee makers. I was in the market for a new one, and decided, well, I’m gonna get a good coffee maker this time. After reading a bunch of reviews, I decided to go with this ninja at 180.00, which to me is a tremendous amount of money for a coffee machine that is not a pressurized cappuccino maker or some thing. One of the decisions I struggled with was whether to get the steel or the glass carafe. The steel carafe was $30 more, and the coffee maker with the steel carafe does not have a heating element for the carafe. The carafe is insulated, and apparently stays warm for three hours or so. I ultimately decided on the glass carafe, because I figured I would want to have a pot of coffee that I could leave on a warmer, and the glass carafe was dishwater safe, unlike the stainless steel one which is recommended to keep out of the dishwasher. If I had to do it over again, I would probably get the steel carafe. The reason is, this coffee maker basically makes one cup at a time when you want to cup of coffee rather than a whole pot. Sure, you can make a half or a whole carafe, but a fresh cup in my opinion is the best. It is kind of like a Keurig, but I think the coffee tastes better out of this. This requires no pods either. Anyway, that’s what I’ve been doing with it, and liking that a lot. I certainly can make a pot, but rather, I use my big coffee cup, and fill up to the extra large travel size which is a nice big cup of coffee. It’s usually all I want, but if I want another one, I will just make another fresh cup. Another feature that I really like is the removable water tank. I just pop it out and fill it up with filtered water out of the refrigerator. The tank is very easy to get in and out. I’ve only had it about a week, but the coffee is delicious, and I’m enjoying learning to use the machine. All in all, it is pretty simple and user friendly, but it does have some nice features that are worth figuring out. I also really enjoy the milk frother. It doesn’t steam, but you don’t need it too, it is much less messy this way, and you can just heat the milk up in the microwave prior to frothing. If you’re on the fence about blowing close to $200 for a coffee maker, but you really like coffee, jump over the fence and pick this up, I’m glad I did. Update OK, I have now had it for a couple of weeks, and I absolutely stand by my review. Neither my wife nor I have bought a cup of coffee anywhere and both love it. In addition to regular coffee, I have made the cold brew which is awesome, the “specialty” which is just like a shot of espresso (with a little frothy half-and-half on the top like a latte), and tonight I made hot tea in it for the first time, which was also terrific. If we continue to not buy coffee drinks out of the house, this thing is going to pay for itself relatively quickly and eliminates the waste of cups and lids. I still kind a wish I had gone with the steel carafe. It would be nice to bring the pot of coffee in the living room, but hey, we can all use the steps. ... show more

Style: Glass Carafe
Decent model coffee maker that does make the coffee taste better but still has a long way to go before it's perfected which I suspect they plan as they keep on introducing new models multiple times a year. Everything on this model works well and it's a standard coffeemaker with the additional feature to brew the coffee longer before pouring through it with very hot water, making the coffee or tea taste better like the old percolator for the coffee. It does leave some residue if you don't use a filter but nobody drinks a bottom of the cup of coffee anyway do they? They still have yet to add features that basic coffeemakers have, such as drip prevention as soon as a pot for a cup is removed from under the place where the coffee comes out. Such a feature should be automatic and not have to push a button. Secondly they do not have any charcoal or other filter to filter out impurities in the water like almost every coffee pot has today. Thirdly on the original model the amount of water in the storage is just too small, it's better in the newer model but still not up to snuff compared to other coffeemakers. The ability for how long and how slow to brew the coffee with water running through it should be programmable. There is still more coffee flavor to be perfected if you were able to put a little bit more hot water through initially, make the temperature higher or release the water into the ground slower. There should also be an option for a quick cups of coffee which would not give me the highest flavor but will be much quicker to brew. lastly with everything becoming connected with IOT, which MIT connected a coffee pot to the Internet over 25 years ago, you would think that this is programmable and would give you an alert when the coffee's ready or allow you to reprogram when the coffee is going to be brewed initially. They should also have a sensor that if you have a partially full carafe and you're going to be brewing more coffee to give you a warning or stop when the coffee gets full, and some older people/elderly or those with poor eyesight don't necessarily see that there's coffee in the carafe every time and it overflows and stains counters. It's not something that's common on coffee machines but it's past time that we got smart coffee machine instead of dumb ones. coffee machines need to move into the next phase of automation and connectivity, without increasing the price beyond the average consumer. Coffee pots are not rocket science and the features added to this coffee pot oh nothing new at all to the coffee scene, it's just going back to the percolator type of coffee making where the water is slowly run thorough the grounds, that's giving you a richer smoother cup of coffee, rather than forced through quickly (e.g. Keurig ) which in the end when that happens gives you a better cup of coffee. it also gives you many more options to explore different coffee flavors and styles at a much lower price point which a cup of coffee using the system is about $0.10-$0.15 versus Keurig style pods $0.50-$0.75. If someone came up with the true smart coffeemaker that took the above advice into account and perhaps also added an espresso /cappuccino option into one machine, they could sell it for much more money but for the average coffee pot this one is still expensive unless it's gotten on sale. The one I bought from my parents was close to 50% off the retail price that is normally on Amazon. for $125 it's worth it, I'm not sure it would be worth it for $200, Especially with their on unhelpfulness after getting the obsolete machine one week before this one was released. Customer service is going downhill everywhere. ... show more
