A great countertop compost bin. We are a family of two adults, and three children of various sizes. I empty this bin into a 5 gallon bucket outside roughly 3 times a week. Then that 5 gallon bin is full in a week's time. So basically I am generating 5 gallons of kitchen scraps weekly, which I run over to my Village's composting collection point. I've been collecting my kitchen scraps/compostables for about 5 months and it is surprisingly easy to do. My hope is that my Village will soon institute a pickup so I don't have to drive my 5 gallon bucket to the drop-off site, but I just do my best to combine it with other errands so I am not making a special trip... I've learned the following tricks: 1. I rinse the bin after emptying it, and wipe it dry with a few paper towels. Then I take those damp paper towels and line the bottom of the bin. This way, when I empty it, the kitchen scraps come out cleanly instead of sticking to the bottom of the bin (and I avoid gross bin scraping). 2. Pay attention to the lighter gray collar piece, and make SURE to remove it along with the lid when emptying the countertop bin. A few times I've not noticed that it went into the compost bucket outside and I've had to go digging through to locate it. The lid will not fit on the countertop bin without the light gray collar piece, so, you'll know immediately if it is missing. 3. I line my outdoor 5 gallon bucket with a compostable liner. Same principle as the countertop bin - otherwise you are going to get scraps stuck in the bottom and a big nasty mess. 4. Don't wait until it is completely full to empty it, because then the lid and the collar piece are dirty. Best to do it when it reaches 80/90% full.

Honestly I'm terrible at keeping track of these things in my kitchen and have taken to just using old paper bags and throwing things out on the regular. I then changed my cat litter to a silca variety and had noted a friend using a small metal compost bin for their cat waste. I hate the metal ones as they're harder to open and shut. This thing opens and shuts with ease while keeping odors out so I decided to try it for the waste instead. It's perfect! Since the silva creates less regular waste I can now move on from my Litter Champ (which is fantastic by the way). This small bin is easy to carry around too making cleaning litter boxes in other areas so much simpler. I'm sure it still works great for food but yes: cat owners 10/10 recommend. Note: I am also lining it with old plastic shopping bags, it doesn't seem to need it to be honest since silva is so good at damp removal but I leave it there anyway just in case.

My city enacted a regulation whereas food scraps have to be separated out and dumped in a separate bin. I live in a condo complex, and going down 5 flights and walking to the bin is a hassle…. I was looking for a way to separate the food scraps from regular trash that would allow me to store them a day or two and make fewer trips. This is perfect…. Fits easily in the freezer, so it doesn’t stink, and then once a week I take it out and dump it into the city food waste bin!!

We started using he OXO good grips easy-clean compost bin, 1.75 gal/6.62L, and line it with a compostable bag. periodically we need to wash the bin itself. We employ the compost bin every three or four days or when it is full and place a new compostable bag inside of the bin. No problem with odors. The bin is nice and sturdy and fits easily under out sink for easy access.

It's small and nice sized for me. Someone who cooks a lot might find it too small. I have bags that hold 2.6 gallons and it's perfect for this. I also find that I can leave the top open because I mainly have things like coffee grounds in it. I've put egg shells and other things in and it hasn't drawn gnats nor does it smell. If the cover is closed, whew, I can't say it doesn't smell. Easy to clean and nice to have the rim and cover come off so I can put the bag under it and it's held down until I remove to take to the compost bin.

This is a fine little pail, a fine size for a kitchen counter, and it keeps food smells inside – that is to say it keeps food smells inside if nothing is even slightly opening the lid ajar. Even the smallest hair of corn will allow rotting food stench out. That being said, it DOES keep smells inside, you just have to be vigilant to make sure the lid is fully closed. Considering the importance of keeping smells inside, the lid is somewhat flimsy. Again, it works, but it's a little flimsy. The lid also tends to fall out while dumping food scraps into whatever your larger container is, so there's also that. Altogether does a good job but I found it to be somewhat unlovable.

I love this little thing - it makes my life easy when making coffee in the morning, and since we've been using it hasn't picked up any smells. It cleans out very nicely too! I will say that removing the lid can sometimes be a little finicky, but that's really just a quibble. Over all, if you have an outdoor compost bin that you don't always want to go to, this thing is fantastic at holding a good quantity of food scraps. We typically have to empty it out everyone 3 to 4 days depending on the time of year.

The bin is slick and smooth to the touch (which I really like), and the rounded corners mean it's super easy to clean thoroughly. The one thing that you might want to know: it's not pure white, more like a cream white. Which will clash if you have white appliances or anything it's near to in a kitchen with white walls or white cupboards. I still rated it a five star for the superior quality.
