  • This is the only coop I will use for nurseries for my hens and their babies!
Size: Jumbo Color: Tan
I had three broody moms and this coop in tan and red are now the only ones I trust to keep my moms and their babies safe from marauding predators. I started out with one of these coops and two of other brands of coops. Predators were breaking into the other two. Two batches of babies wound up orphaned along the way. We meaning us and their children still miss them a lot. I revamped the entire fenced off nursery area so we have an avenue of nurseries all made with this product. I moved the orphans into the new structures where they have remained safe. One of our last orphaned clutches (1 cockerel and 5 pullets) still live as a family group of six in their nursery. They love their home and refuse to move to the main coop for adults. So the kids give this chicken coop a five star review as well. My only complaint is that I have to dismantle the roof in order to thoroughly clean these out spotless. As I build these (once you have built one the rest are extremely EZ-PZ!) I did make 2 small modifications. I added a (1X2) brace alongside the coop door top as I assemble to prevent the door from sinking in too deep. They provided one in the kit but I made a taller one that was more stable. I also changed out the door handle to something bigger and easier to grab. I used a small rubber mallet from the dollar store to gently tap the parts together- which saves on this great-grandma's tender hands. I have owned 3 other styles. None of them proved as safe for the birds or as easy to assemble. I've heard people say I wouldn't buy anything I had to make modifications to- well if it only adds to the safety of the birds and ease of use why not? You don't have to make these modifications but if you change your mind and want to later just know it's easier to do it as it is build and not an after thought. It took me less than 5 minutes to modify the coop doors. The other styles I owned were flimsy, difficult to operate every day, and proven not safe for the same price- who cares if there were any modifications needed. This coop is roomier, costs about the same, the safest I have experienced ever, and houses all the full grown birds it's advertised to house, plus it has full bird approval from the kids and their moms. Another added benefit is it's durability. The wooden ones start to rot within a year or two of daily use. No coops should be made of balsa wood. It's an invitation for gnawing rodents who will eat babies and will start eating chickens alive as they sleep. My oldest coop of this style is 4+ years old and just as sturdy as day one. I can pressure wash out the entire thing after shoveling out the big debris. Also another note: the manufacturers (New Age Pets) are very reachable. I have never needed replacement parts ever as everything has always come intact, but in hearing from others who have also use this product -when they did have a broken piece in transit -the manufacturer immediately replaced them without delay. ... show more

  • Lots of love, needs some improvement
Size: Jumbo Color: Tan
I now have two of these coops, and I'd buy it again if necessary. What's good? IT"S NOT WOOD. We live in hot, wet Florida, and those wooden coops only last about a year before they fall apart. This won't fall apart because it's not made of wood. Plus, it's large and roomy--I have five bantams in there, and there's plenty of room. What's not so good, but fixable--the ventilation for hot locales is terrible. I took my jigsaw and cut an opening into the left and right sides, then covered the openings with strong hardware cloth. Better ventilation is absolutely necessary for this coop. What's there just isn't enough. And unless you fix the roof, it'll be impossible to clean. We removed the bolts attaching the roof to the sides of the coop, assembled the roof separately, and secured the panels with small screws. Then we attached the roof to the front of the coop so we can lift the entire thing to hose out the coop when cleaning. Sometimes you need to be able to grab a chicken in an emergency, and there's no way you could do it through the openings in the door or nesting box, especially if you have a run attached to the front of the coop like we do. So--I always make modifications, but this is still the best coop for the money. And it will last because (all together now) it's NOT wood! ... show more

  • Pieces Packed Out of Order. Terrible Design for Cleaning. Several Pieces Broken or Missing.
Size: Jumbo Color: Red
Whoever designed this didn't raise chickens. Dark inside. No window. Take their advice and remove and identify all of the pieces from the two shipping boxes. They numbered in assembly order, but packed out of order haphazardly in the shipping container. Several pieces were broken. Also, where you assemble it is where it is going to stay. Due to the design, I do not trust attempting to lift and move this. Picture 1 - Vertical Support broken. Was able to assemble with the broken piece. Picture 2 - Missing Roof Support bracket. Found it in the box. Had to buy two screws to attach. Picture 3 - Left Vertical Hinge align piece broken off. Was able to epoxy. Picture 4 - This hinge piece was attached but broke right off the first time I raised the roosting box roof. I will disassemble and try to epoxy the same way I did the left handed piece. Picture 5 - to clean, you must remove this screw and the matching one on the left, and slide the individual roof pieces out toward you in reverse assembly order. There are only small cutouts in the corners on the floor to supposedly wash out of the box of any straw, feces, etc. Straw does not go out, making it necessary to somehow shovel the waste up and out of the top. How this is going to work in the winter with ice and snow on the roof I do not know. Update September 2024. This is the worst design ever. The cleanout holes in the corners are too small for chicken feces to wash out of. Whoever designed this barn clearly did not know anything about chickens. I hate it and I am going to destroy it and start over next spring. ... show more
