  • Good starting bike for cycle touring
I am fairly serious cyclist I wanted a touring bike look at lots of options decided to use this bike as project. I imported the bike to Australia for modification arrived in standard bike box packaging well packed and additional protection to protect the frame with film frame. Assembly of the bike is qucik and simple if you know bikes bars pedals and front rack nice snug fit purpose designed for the frame. The bike is pretty much good to go gears were right first time albeit a little tweak on the front mech. The discs need attention on set up and I guess this where you may need to visit your loacl bike shop if your not mechanical with bikes. Warning this bike is not light but what do you expect for the price and if you just want a bike out the box for tracks / touring ii would recommend for the price. This is a project so the wheels drive train brakes will be replaced with lighter more expensive parts but what attracted me to this bike was the frame set lots of bosses for mounting cages etc. and the finish is nice the top bar bag is ok fr a day ride but serious touring use you would need to change it well secured to the frame by fram mounts looking at the descrition on amazon there's a bit of info missing so for anyone intrested her is some addtional: It's one size 54 cm but lots of adjustment extra long seat post. tyres are fairly basic Chinese 40 mm but functional brake is std size you can replace easily if you want to use shimano type hollow chainset gears are bottom line shimano but really good for the price point shifters are Microshift not shimano take a bit of getting used to but very functional and positive. Saddle is plastic coated by very comfortable and ni branding touches. The front rack looks bomb proof and is well welded and powder coated. ... show more

  • Better than I expected for the price
Like the title says, for the price this bike cost me I was expecting it to be less capable. I have been unable to find any bike in this price range that has even some of the features of the Mongoose Elroy. The plus sized tires were my biggest priority but to get STI shifters as well as disc brakes was just icing on the cake. I will be the first to admit that both of these components are by no means high end, but they work and are standard enough that I could easily replace them both with better versions down the road. The frame is well made and should easily support 45c+ tires which is ultimately what attracted me to this bike. I intend to use it as a training bike and as something I can just explore my area with. It's a heavy bike which is to be expected, and it does require some tinkering to really dial in the components. I gave it a 4 star because of this, the front disc brake is being finicky and as a result it's not working at it best. I am planning to work on that so it should hopefully become a non issue in the future, but for anyone looking at this bike it's something to be aware of. Aside from that it is an impressively capable bike, especially for this price. The nearest competitor I could find to this bike is the Aventon Kijote which, while it does appear to be a bit nicer, is well over $100 more expensive than the Mongoose if not more. If you are looking for your first adventure/gravel bike I would say the money spent on this bike won't dissapoint you. For a nicer bike Mongoose does in fact make much higher end models which are themselves competitive for their price range. If getting top of the line is not the goal, this bike is worth the price it's listed at. ... show more

  • Great Bike for the Money Great Bike for the Money
This really is a great bike for the money. As others have said, the brakes are pretty much the weakest link. Everything else is great. I like the shifters! All in all it's a pretty high quality kit for the money. The pedals have metal cages with good bite, the crank is decent and all metal. The chainrings are thick and look to be CNC milled, not one of those cheesy stamped thin riveted chainrings. The hubs and rims are no brand name but seem adequate. The mongoose branded saddle is comfortable and is nothing I'm in a hurry to change. This is my first gravel bike. I have a Trek mountain bike and a Raleigh hybrid for comparison sake. I like the geometry on this bike a lot. I'm 5' 11" and 240lbs, I have fairly short arms so I like a bike with a shorter reach which this has. When I was shopping for gravel bikes I test rode several bike shop brands and I was going to purchase a Giant ToughRoad SLR 2 in size Medium. This bike doesn't stop or shift as smooth as the Giant, but riding it feels very similar. It accelerates quick, the drivetrain seems similar ratio-wise and the frame geometry is pretty similar. Below is more info on the geometry that I received from Pacific Cycle. What is the top tube length on the Elroy? Horizontal = 54cm; Actual = 52cm What is the wheelbase on the Elroy? 104cm What is the standover height on the Elroy? Approx. 81cm What is the headtube angle on the Elroy? 71deg ... show more

  • So close Mongoose, so close So close Mongoose, so close
When I saw an adventure/touring bike for around 400 bucks I got very excited, usually the entry price on something like this is $1,000 and up. Unfortunately it ended up being too good to be true and I received a bike with flaws big enough that Mongoose themselves suggested I do not ride it. I'll start with the good. This bike has features you just don't see at this price. Disc brakes mounted inside the frame, internally routed cables. front and rear rack/fender mounts, bottle mounts everywhere, a frame bag, disc brake specific rims (lot of budget bikes throw rim brake rims on, showing a brake track that will never be used). It really is an unbelievable value for a touring bike. The frame is great, rides smooth and is surprisingly light too. The included saddle was plenty comfortable and it even came with metal cage pedals! Saddle and pedals are the first things I immediately replace on my budget bikes but these were good enough. The shifting performance is reliable but not that responsive or quick, still perfectly adequate. There is some play in the levers microshift system that isn't exactly confidence inspiring, should be fine for most uses but if you are going on a multi-day tour I might suggest upgrading. Tires, as others have mentioned they aren't great. Mine hold air fine so it seems like another quality control issue (more on that later) for those getting flats. Considering the nature of this bike, you could upgrade the tires anyway and use the ones it came with to make some DIY studded snow tires! I've ridden bikes for a long time, racking up thousands of miles on all kinds of bikes from walmart hunkers I found in the trash to top level road bikes that cost more than my car. The Mongoose Elroy really is one of the best values out there IF you get a good one. Which brings me to the bad. As others have mentioned, the disc brakes on this are very, very, very bad. I read the other reviews and thought, "well, they can't possibly be that bad?" They are. Worse even. Usually disc brakes with cheap tires can cause an issue because of their tendency to lock the rear wheel and start a skid, but these are so bad they can't even stop the wheel, much less lock it. Seriously, I was going around 10 miles an hour as a test and tried to brake and the bike. did. not. stop. Despite being set up perfectly and gripping the level as hard as I could, the brakes simply do not work. You hear a grinding sound and the wheel gradually comes to a stop about 10 seconds later. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE NEAR TRAFFIC OR HILLS WITH THESE BRAKES. Replace them ASAP. But it gets worse. After my tuneup/test ride I came back to get the Elroy in touring mode by attaching the included front rack and my own rear rack and panniers. The included front rack was so poorly welded my jaw practically hit the floor, it is badly out of true. I've attached some images so you can see for yourself, look at that crossbar that holds that brake mount! It is a shame because the front rack is solidly built, but not square so only 3 of the 4 bolts could mount AND even if you tried that, it mounts about 20 degrees off from the front tire, making it effectively useless. Not the worst deal in the world I thought, Mongoose can send me a new front rack and I'll be touring in no time! Nope. When attaching my rear rack I noticed it mounted severely leaning to the right. I have an Axiom rack that I put a ton of miles on and I know it is perfectly square. But just to be sure I mounted another rack I had, and saw the same lean. Upon closer inspection I noticed that the right rear rack mount was askew. It was not in line and was maybe a 1/4 inch lower on the frame than the left mount - any rack on there was going to be off (lol with the front rack mounting off to the left and the rear mounting off to the right, maybe it will be balanced!). Unfortunately, I was now the proud owner of a touring bike with racks that was not capable of touring with racks. I wrote to Mongoose about potential options to fix this and was told what I already feared. With some welding mistakes this obvious to the naked eye, they suggested the entire frame could be compromised and recommended I immediately return it. Unfortunately the lack of quality control is the fatal flaw of this bike (and the brakes). It is a bummer because it really is a nice ride and value! I'm still giving it 3 stars even though I was shipped a completely defective product that I returned and will not be getting another! TL/DR: The Mongoose Elroy is an unbelievable value and with some new disc brakes you can be touring across your country for under 500 bucks. But, the chances of getting a good one seem low and you might end up with a faulty frame like I did. I would not recommend this bike to anyone for those potentially dangerous reasons. HOWEVER, IF you do get one and IF there are no issues on the frame or the rack and IF you replace the brakes, you'll probably be pretty happy. ... show more

  • Excellent bike at a good price
I love this bike, I wanted it as a project bike and may still change our the components. I'll certainly put the best I can on when they need replaced. There were a number of question marks I was concerned about with this bike. The lack of gears being the main one. It has 14 but they are configured in a way that actually makes it easy on the legs going uphill and in the lower gears it still has enough bite going downhill. From the time I've had it about a month now I've only added a rear rack but do think it would benefit from having new tires, but you're probably going to replace them fairly early on anyway. Or at least I know I do. This bike will have fairly good mileage in it and is absolutely comparable to bikes that are much more expensive. It's really well built and is a really smooth ride. Some people have said that they had issues with the brakes but the best solution is to take it to your local bike shop and I'm pretty sure they will fix it quickly enough. ... show more

  • Breaks and tires
I am extremely disappointed. Worst experience I've had with a new bicycle. Both front and back brake discs were bent (maybe during shipping) i straightened them to where they are almost perfect, which took hours. I adjusted the break calipers for the pad to be as close to the disks as possible without rubbing, they hardly stop the bike, they are not quality breaks, not even close. I inflated the tires to 40 PSI as recommended on the tire, both tires have lumps on them so i can't have a smooth ride unless i change the tires and i can't properly/ safely stop the bike unless i change the brake calipers and discs. The saddle is not great but that's just a preference thing. I paid $410 plus tax for this bike and i can't comfortably or safely ride it unless i replace the break system and tires. I've wasted 2 days of my free time trying to give this bike a chance. Returning it is a huge inconvenience and so is changing major components that are going to cost me time and money. I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it yet. ... show more

  • This bike made it across America
I rode this bike on a 5 month long tour from California to Michigan down to Alabama and back. No major issues. I did swap out the stock tires for shwalbe marathon plus, the seat with a selle italia, and some flat pedals I was gifted. The rear shifting cable did bend a few times requiring me to replace it and the brakes aren't stellar but they work if you have a tool to adjust periodically. The chain also broke but that was mostly my fault. For the price this thing did a great job and I often surprised people with the fact that a Mongoose was able to accomplish this much. Thought it was only right to review it at some point. I'd recommend this for a budget touring bike any day. ... show more

  • Fun Adventure. Bicycle!
I use a Mongoose Terex bike for my commute but its a heavy built bike. I wanted a lighter bike for my long distance Turing. The bicycle took longer to get because UPS would not deliver without a signature. There is minimal setup as far as parts go. Handle bar and stem tightness. The wheels are quick release and are easy. The brakes were preadjusted close enough that minimal adjustment was necessary. However the paddle shifters were NOWHERE close and didn't work so I had a shop do it. I was so anxious to try the bike that I found a way to lock the derailer in 2nd gear and took it fo a 50 mile hilly ride! This bike has 5 mounts for water. Bottles! After assembly I put 40lbs in the rear tire which is the minimum and as I was preparing to do the same up front the rear tube blew! I Customer service said they could not replace the tube but took $68.00 off the bike for a 4 dollar tube! I am very happy with this purchase. ... show more
