I have lost a lot of my mobility/balance in my legs. enough to admit that I need something to hold onto at times. especially in a shower that I have to close my eyes and the floor is slippery. I can't really feel my feet much. I have tried the suction cup grab rails and for the most part? I don't trust em. This is WAY harder to install than them. But worth it. I wanted to mount this on a stud. it is 16" on center but can vary slightly depending on angle. The angle? that really makes the thing useful for me. Getting in or out or washing my hair etc there is always a place to grab confidentlty ... show more

    • Installation Requires Power Tools and Patience

The instructions should state that in addition to an electric drill you will also need an electric screw driver or drill/driver combo for installation. A manual screw driver will not have enough torque to fully insert the 2" long screws (6 total) into a pilot hole. Furthermore, the instructions advise drilling 1/8" pilot holes for the screws. However, the screws have a much larger diameter than 1/8" and will bind when driven into the small pilot hole. Best to use a 9/64" bit bit or even a 5/32". I think the instructions recommend 1/8" because most common dirll kits include this size. However, save yourself a bit of aggravation and use a slightly larger bit for wooden wall studs. Our 1940's house has lath and plaster walls instead of sheet rock. That makes it harder to locate the wall studs. Therefore, I used an electronic stud finder (Zircon MetalliScanner m40) with more than 1.5" of depth range to locate the nails connecting the lath to the wall studs. Measuring more than twice before drilling is highly recommended. Once I located four or five nail-in-stud locations and marked them with post-it notes, I used a level to connect the dots. Use blue painters tape or post-it notes to avoid marking a painted wall. Between 33" and 36" above the floor is the ADA recommended height for grab bar (parallel to the floor). I also recommend sitting on the toilet seat to find the height that suits you best. This is a project that cannot be rushed. Take your time to confirm wall stud locations for both ends of the grab bar. There are also 6 tiny set screws that secure the mounting flange hub to the angled grab bar. For one stage of the install they are backed out of their nominal position for separating the grab bar from the mounting flange hub. Once separated you can anchor the mounting flange (2" screws) into the wall at the pre-marked locations. In a following step, the tiny screws are driven back into their threaded holes (screw heads flush) to allow the wall covers to slide onto the ends of the grab bar. Once the wall covers slide over the hub of the mounting flange, the tiny screws are driven back into their nearly flush position to secure the angled grab bar to the mounting flange hub. No wonder the kit includes two extra tiny set screws in case you loosen one and it disapprears into a rabbit hole. Once installed the grab bar is quite sturdy. ... show more

We had no idea how difficult simply standing from a sitting position would be after surgery. This was great because of the bend in the bar. Both pushing up and pulling up was possible. Great support for older, less agile people as well.
