This inexpensive pinpointer is a great Value! Although NOT waterproof it detects metals as well as my Garrett and Minelab BUT the LCD display is more functional indicating signal strength (6 bars), speaker and vibrate modes plus it's back (side) lighted. NOT waterproof by any stretch but it has the same depth (it is waterproof 4" up from the tip for poking around rocks). It has an actual copper wire wound ferrite core 'Coil' in the tip, not the simple/cheap flat PCB type. Mine detects ferrous metals up to 6" from tip and 4" on all sides, non-ferrous 4" and 3" on all sides. The big advantage is the LCD strength display. Of course the speaker and vibrations increase with strength as well. I typically use vibrate alone. It's detection speed is not quite as fast but works ok for my style of detecting. Overall I give this pinpointer a solid 5 - if it was waterproof it would be an 8 out of 5.

My son is 12 (67 year old retiree with 8 grandkids and a steady military pension at heart) and for some reason likes to do "old man" things. Fishing, metal detecting, rebuilding lawnmowers, collecting old OLD bottles. Anyway, he decided metal detecting was his newest hobby right before Christmas. He got a bigger model, but, because he showed so much interest in the "top-pocket finds", I felt I should get him a pinpoint detector as well. HE LOVES IT! And this particular model is so easy for him to handle. It's extremely accurate, and it didn't break the bank. Definitely buy this one of you're starting out and looking for something on a budget, because it is amazing!

I have been using this Pinpointer for about almost 2 weeks now and I really love it until I had gotten dirt on the display, So I decided to wash it off and when I did water had gotten into the display, So what I would recommend try not to get the screen wet because after I did you could see water spots when it was on and it also started vibrating and making a beeping sound like it was detecting something there but there was nothing there, So in conclusion if you do get sand or dirt on it i would try to wipe/blow it off, but other than this issue it worked great.

If for some reason you bought this, don't let it touch sand ever. We set it down on a towel at the beach for 10 minutes, and when we picked it back up sand had gotten inside and ruined it, somehow. Also, doesn't come with batteries.

You really do get what you pay for. This item is battery operated which is no big deal. The housing cap for the battery solid plastic. The downfall is the range of the detector. It will be find for an item that has already been unearthed or laying shallow on top of ground.

Item works well and accurate. I like the multiple feature regarding tone/vibration that can be turned on/off. Not waterproof but my husband accidentally submerged for several minutes before realizing and it quit. After removing battery and letting it dry out, I replaced battery and it works!
