  • 4.0 out of 5 stars A nicely balanced pan which goes from stove to oven
Size: 18 CM Style: Casserole
The Mepra casserole is a beautiful shape, not quite a tulip. It has a heavy sandwiched bottom and conducts heat well. It is also well balanced and sits perfectly on our smaller burner, exactly covering the burner. On the interior are metric markings in 1/2 liter increments to 2 liters. I love that it can be used on an induction burner, as we had some sort of electrical problem around a month ago, and our electrician is away. Fortunately we have a nice induction burner, but only had 1 pan for it until it became our primary cooktop. We now have a nice set of Kitchenaid non-stick and a Berghoff Scala skillet which came with the cooktop. BergHOFF Touch Screen Single Induction Cooktop and Scala 10-Inch Deep Skillet . I have quite a lot of cookware I have accumulated over the years. This piece is among the nicest of my stainless, but all things considered I prefer enamel non-stick. The Mepra is easier to clean, and to store and does not weigh anything near what my Le Creuset weighs. I love that it goes from stovetop to oven and that it can be used with the induction burner, but still do prefer the enamel, particularly for casseroles (which are often a challenge to get clean). My husband and I got a nice set of stainless when we got married, and over the years I have still collected a few pieces which are better for certain things. Over the weekend I spent some time reading breakfast recipes in the New York Times and found some interesting variations on a Dutch Baby, but did not have the right pan. (well, my Caphalon "everything pan" would have worked had I been cooking for 4-6, but I wasn't). This pan is just about perfect, and fortunately, not too large because with all the cookware I have each piece has to justify the cabinet space it takes up. This is a great size for chile, or a casserole for 2 or 3. In a couple of weeks we drop our son at college, at which point this pan will become a lot more practical. Between now and then I can continue playing with the recipes I discovered over the weekend. It does very well with a basic Dutch baby. I found a recipe for a savory version with gruyer cheese which sounds wonderful and plan to make it in the near future. I will update this review when I do because it looks like it could be a chore to clean up, and will report on how well it does. For the basic pancake it distributes heat well so that it browns nicely on both sides and puffs well, but that doesn't take much clean up. Baked on cheese is another matter. The Le Creuset, with their wooden handles, can not go in the oven, so this is still the best piece I have for this particular dish. ... show more

  • 3.0 out of 5 stars I'm a little Casserole Pot, short and stout!
Size: 18 CM Style: Casserole
When UPS drove up in my drive, I thought "Oh, there's my pot!" I was pretty excited, and curious, since this is supposed to be a "very high end" line of cookware and I have such a conglomeration of pots and pans. I would love to have a "set" of nice quality cookware. I couldn't pass up trying this, though in hindsight, the price would keep me from ordering an entire set. When I saw the box, however, I thought, "No, must be something else;" and when I lifted it, I just knew it couldn't be the pot, much too light. So when I opened the even smaller box within the Amazon box, I burst out laughing. Nestled inside was a tiny pot, not the larger one I expected. Yes, the measurement of 18cm was mentioned, but I don't know metric sizes (not the company's fault), so that 18 cm went right over my peahead. When I saw the price, I thought sure it was a large casserole pot! So the pot size is an issue if you are expecting something larger (I included a couple of photos - one shows it sitting on a salad plate, and the other with my small coffee cup sitting inside it). But, I can always use another size pot, so I wasn't completely unhappy about this at all. In fact, now that I have it, I'm happy with the size - it's a size I don't have now, so that's a positive. But, for that size at over $100 (at time of my review), the price is ridiculous. It was hard enough to imagine that price for a larger pot, but for something this small - this company has high thoughts of itself and its products, that's for sure. Perhaps they are that quality made but I am not convinced. If you purchase the entire set, these pots/skillets do come with lids. In fact, when I researched this product, I did find they come with lids, so I'm not sure why this one does not. I thought the pot would be heavier for this price. Though I suppose heaviness doesn't necessarily indicate quality. It did seem to be a good-quality cooking pot. I put mine in the dishwasher before cooking with it and it washed up fine. Its rounded-shape is nice for a change from my other cookware. It has a nice shine. There are liter measurements marked on the inside. I didn't mind the gaps in the handles - I have other good cookware made like this and I've never had a problem with cleaning or anything coming loose, and I expect that will be the case here. The handles are thick and nicely made. As for cooking, it does well, but would, or could, I spend this much on cookware when there are less expensive options out there? No, I would, could not, spend this much. If money is no problem for you, and you like high-end cookware, and you use the metric system (:D) then these would be a beautiful addition to your kitchen. I imagine if you had an entire set (that will set you back quite a bit), it would look beautiful in your kitchen and on your stovetop. I may have considered 4 stars if: the price were not over $100; if it came with a lid. But that said, it is a very nice good looking casserole pot. ... show more
