Update #2 Heating element went out when I had a 130.00 brisket. Ruined brisket because I smoke the brisket overnight. UPDATE #3 REPLACE HEATING ELEMENT READY TO GO... NO GO! BOUGHT A $108.00 BRISKET, WAS CHECKING TEMP JUST BEFORE PUTTING BRISKET INTO SMOKER. TEMPS DROPPING DUE TO WHAT APPEARS TO BE MALFUNCTION OF TIMER. NOW, MASTERBUILT WANTS ME TO BUY ANOTHER TIMER. I DO NOT, NOT, AND NOT RECOMMEND THIS SMOKER. TERRIBLE DESIGN. HORRIBLE QUALITY. *******UPDATED DETAILS******** THE SMOKER IS A NICE SMOKER THAT DOES THE JOB. HOWEVER THE INSULATION IS NOT VERY GOOD. WHEN THE OUTSIDE IS AS HOT AS THE INSIDE, IT IS CLEAR THE INSULATION IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. THE CONTROLLER ON THE TOP OF SMOKER IS NOT VISIBLE DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS. I LITERALLY HAD TO GET A BLACK TOWEL TO PUT OVER IT TO SEE THE NUMBERS. THIS COULD EASILY BE FIXED BY THE MFG. IT IS AN OUTSIDE SMOKER, YET THE MANUAL CLEARLY SAYS TO NOT LET IT GET WET. WELL, IF IT IS AN OUTSIDE SMOKER, IT SHOULD BE WEATHER PROOF, ESPECIALLY RAIN PROOF. DON'S GET ME WRONG, IT IS A GOOD SMOKER, BUT THESE ITEMS SERIOUSLY NEED TO BE ADDRESSED BY THE MFG. I SENT A MSG TO THE MFG ABOUT AN ISSUE, IT TOOK THEM 15 DAYS TO REPLY TO ME. NOT EVEY REMOTELY ACCEPTABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE. ... show more

  • Perfect for us old, lazy guys.
Size: 40-inch Digital
Totally stress free. I have had all the other types of smokers but I got old and lazy. When I moved to the retirement community I got lazy and bought an electric smoker. I can set it for 18 hours and go away for the day, no worries. I add chips for smoke flavor a few times and it comes out perfect. No red ring as that is caused by NOx from wood fires but is not important for flavor. I got the 40 inch size so a whole big brisket fits on 1 rack. I have a friend that got the model with the window. After a couple times scraping the stuff off the window he stopped scraping. Window is not needed. Since it’s electric just set it and forget it. On a side note, as I said I’m lazy so I no longer make my own rub. I buy the “Tony Chanceries No Salt”. Since it has no salt I can put it on as thick as I want (remember to salt the meat separately). I don’t rub it, I cover it thick. On a side, side note I got wireless thermometers. Much easier to use (did I say I’m lazy?) and it is blue tooth so as I sit here I can check the meat. The brand I got, ThermoMaven, produces a nice time vs temp chart on my phone so I can see when the stall starts and finishes as well as when the meat is done. Now if Elon will get busy and make a robot to take the meat out of the smoker I can be fully lazy. ... show more

  • Very easy to use
Size: 40-inch Digital
Through the years I’ve gone through two 30” Digital Masterbuilt electric smokers and bought This 40” April first 2025. They are very easy to use and produce very good smoked food. I have kept them outside on my 15’ by 20’ covered patio and where they get used regularly. The only problem I have is the controller going out. This one has gone out in 7 months. This time instead of leaving the controller on the smoker I won’t fasten it down and just sit it on top of the smoker where I can unplug it and keep it in the house. I believe moisture is causing them to stop working. I will buy another one when this one starts to come apart from lots of use. ... show more

  • Moisture escapes from smoker into the contorl/display housing....shorts it out!!! AVOID!!! Moisture escapes from smoker into the contorl/display housing....shorts it out!!! AVOID!!!
Size: 40-inch Digital
DEFECTIVE. The smoker body cavity has (2) smoke/moisture escape point on the top of the body... they feed MOIST SMOKE directly into the control panel/display. After (4) hours of NEW USE, my control shorted out. Luckily, I complained and received a second replacement control/display as the first one WAS NOT READABLE IN DAYLIGHT. ??? WHO SMOKES IN THEIR HOUSE OR GARAGE? NOT. Masterbuilt sent a replacement, but unfornately, LED's are not what you want in broad daylight. The design should have been LCD's, which you can read under most 'light' conditions. STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE FROM MASTERBUILT on the shorted control/display. I have 'patched' my smoker with gasketing, etc, to seal off the spewing moisture and smoke that goes DIRECTLY INTO THE CONTROL. VERY POOR DESIGN, AVOID! (PS, I'm a retired engineer, I know how to troubleshoot and find the root causes of issues). ... show more

  • Great smoker - Terrible Packing
Size: 40-inch Digital
This is my second Masterbuilt 40-inch digital smoker. I bought the first one in 2009. I love the digital electric controls!!! Set-and-forget. The smoke pan loading through the side is fantastic. I burn my own hardwood mostly. They are great smokers. My first one 'threw craps' and it was just too much bother to try to get parts - and I wasn't sure which parts to get. So, this one was my solution. You don't need a glass door. You can only see through it for a little while on the first smoke, anyway. The new drain behind the unit where you can see the pan filling up with goop is a good add. The digital control brain is cheap, easy to replace as needed, and available everywhere on the internet. So, good job Masterbuilt! My issue? The truckers dented the side when they pushed the box with a fork lift. Masterbuilt has this packaged and padded for minimal shipping abuse. A little extra cardboard or foam would have stopped this damage! I'm keeping it, as the damage is just cosmetic, but gee whiz kids!! Well, with that said, I'm off to set this up and burn it out for the first time. Oh - one other thing. My new smoker DID come with the rear handle and wheels. For me, this is almost a must. It makes it so easy to roll in and out of storage. Thanks, MB. ... show more

  • POOR DESIGN, CANNOT GET IT WET!
Size: 40-inch Digital
Due to the location of the controller on the top of the smoker, IT CANNOT BE USED DURING RAIN OR SNOW. Moisture gathers between the smoker and the controller and breaks the controller. VERY POOR DESIGN FOR AN OUTDOOR APPLIANCE. I just had to replace the controller for the second time, luckily the smoker is still within the 1-year warranty. Both times I was planning to smoke meat for a party of guests, both times just to find my smoker was broken from precipitation during the last cook. I'm planning to build a canopy to keep precipitation away, because it's almost impossible where I live to only smoke in dry weather, especially given that smoking times are so unpredictable. Oh, and I didn't mention that the smoker doesn't come with a cover. I happened to buy one separately. IF YOU DON'T COVER THIS APPLIANCE, IT WILL BREAK AS SOON AS RAIN TOUCHES IT. I regret this purchase and wish I had spent up for a better smoker from a different brand. I really wish I could return it. ... show more

  • Insane Fluctuating Temperatures
Size: 40-inch Digital
UPDATE: Y'know I admitted I'm new to this, so surely I made a mistake. Ok, first of all, the temps are GOING to fluctuate no matter what you use. Just accept it. Second: the door latch is a bolt: so screw it in more. This locks the heat in more. Made all the difference. I'll bump the review to 3 stars... but not 4 - the temp at the top is still hard to read, and the control thing at the top still isn't accurate, be prepared to fix that. Admittedly, I'm new to all of this. Some of this is likely user error, but ... well read on. I made 2 attempts at smoking ribs. The first time I tried it, the meat just wasn't getting hot enough. It took me over 12 hours, and even then, I still had to resort to using my oven, and later my microwave just to get the meat at an edible temperature. The second attempt I used a Thermoworks Smoke(TM) remote thermometer, which I credit wholly to why at least this second attempt was even successful. I set the smoker to 225F, the temp would fluctuate between 208 and 232. Admittedly, it was windy outside, but ... You'd think this thing would be more insulated. So don't use this on a windy day... or a cold day... or a rainy day... or a snowy day... This smoker only effectively works, apparently, if it's summertime weather and everything's absolutely perfect. Because there was such a variance in temperature, the meat couldn't get above about 174F... so I kept going out and turning the temperature up so the average temp could heat the meat up. eventually settling on about 275 for a temperature (the highest it'll go) I was able to get the meat to go up and settle at a nice 196F (2 degrees colder than the recommended fall-off-the-bone temp, but it was sufficient). Total time: 8 hours. Hardly a 3-2-1 hour timing. If I had to do it all over again, I'd smoke the ribs for 3 hours before taking it out, saucing it, wrapping it, and putting it in THE OVEN, then pulling it back out and smoking it for the last hour just to give it some bark. I shouldn't have to use my oven as a workaround for a smoker that isn't insulated enough to keep its own temperature, and I shouldn't have to build a box or barricade it so outside weather can't affect it so drastically. I would've been better off just using a $40 charcoal grill. Listen - Masterbuilt smokers are made for "frugal buyers". You're getting what you pay for, that is to say: you're getting a device that requires you to babysit and work around its quirks rather than a device that's dependable and robust. ... show more
