  • The Little Tiller That Can!
Style: Cultivator
I must say I am impressed. Researched many tiller models, some mini and some not-so-mini. Settled on this Mantis after surveying reviews here and elsewhere. What a delightful little machine. The money and time it has saved allowing me to do the project I had paid for itself a couple times over. In spite of its relatively lightweight status (24lbs I think?), it did a surprisingly good job of digging into the heavily compacted dirt and clay in my yard. Doubly so because of roots I asked it to go through, leftover from the four trees we cut down. I do have a few recommendations for getting the most out of it: (1) Make liberal use of the ability to easily reverse the blades back and forth from “cultivating mode” into “tilling mode.” The cultivator mode made a HUGE difference in being able to cut through tree and plant roots without tangling and/or jamming every few seconds. Once the roots and plants are well dealt with, a quick return to the more aggressive tiller mode churns more deeply in very short order. NOTE: this also reduces the amount of bouncing that seemed to irritate some other reviewers. And me. :-) (2) Take your time and let it do its thing. Some want to make a single quick pass and then wonder why it only takes off an inch or so of the hard compacted top layer. Remember that it is, after all, a MINI tiller. Give it a moment, pull it back and forth a few feet to remove some of the dirt pile that builds up under the tines, and it will settle in for the deeper churn right quickly. (3) Get the kickstand. It’s too convenient to skip. (4) I think the real value of this machine (for me, anyhow) lies in its ability to do double-duty. Or quadruple duty, I guess. Treat yourself to the attachments. The power rake, edger, and aerator attachments are fantastically effective additions that really round out the Mantis’s capacity and utility in the yard, turning it into a true year-around workhorse. The attachments have been utterly worth the added expense, and switching between them is an easy and quick affair. My review was not solicited. I am submitting this review only because I am so tickled with it’s performance. The only criticism I can offer so far regards the less than perfect directions for assembly. Some of the nuts did not match what was described or displayed in the directions, and the wording was not entirely intuitive in every instance. Having said that, a little looking at what I had in the box made it clear enough what was needed, and it worked out just fine. The only caution I would have for potential purchasers is the size. This isn’t a critique of the unit itself so much as a cautionary comment to make sure it is what you want. It does a fantastic job for a mini tiller. But it is a mini tiller. My house sits on just shy of 1/3-acre and it takes a long time to work my entire lawn in any mode. If I had more storage room, I’d be wanting their larger model. Especially if my plan were to till the entire yard. Having said that, it does a fantastic job. I am highly impressed that such a small unit can do so much and do it effectively. The amount of time, effort, and money this Mantis has saved me has made me a huge fan. Far better machine than some of the other tillers I have used in the past and I couldn’t be more tickled with my purchase! ... show more

  • Time Saver…Buy It!
Style: Cultivator
Delivered within 24hours! Was extremely satisfied knowing it came with a honda engine!! Assembled in less than 30minutes with no problems! Read the directions - easy to follow. Used it to till my front yard after removing two trees after storm damaged. Preparing soil for new sod. Reliable, easy start, aggressive, compact, lightweight. Liked the ease of removing tines when bigger roots got stuck. Look forward using it for tilling fall garden for my wife! ... show more

  • Great Light Weight Tiller
Style: Cultivator
Ended with a couple of extra nuts... went back carefully through instructions... they were just extra... I only gave this a 4-star review... b/c... while it might seem to be a simple assembly... you would be best advised to have a second set of hands, to help hold, tighten, align... Don't tighten down any of your bolts completely, until all aligned and assembled loosely... More to come after putting more hours in on it in the dirt... And now... the more to come... this tiller absolutely Rocks... !!! Super simple to operate... and doesn't beat the operator up using it... plus... goes through some of the hardest, most compacted (for years) dirt... even with a bunch of rocks in it... If you watch any of the online videos about this machine... I have to agree with one... it is great for moving dirt once you get it tilled up a bit... and great for digging... till it up to about 10" down... then take a shovel to remove dirt when digging a trench... or... digging to get ready to pour sidwalks, and the like... ... show more

  • Powerful for small tiller
Style: Cultivator
I used the tiller on my vegetable garden, and was very happy with its performance. I tested the tiller in an old bed of raspberries in which I wanted to make open isles. The tiller was able to go through the raspberries, and the picture shows the roots that it dug up without the motor dying. Impressive performance. ... show more

  • Well built and easy to use
Style: Cultivator
It’s funny, I read some of the “reviews” and found it hard to believe that they were about this same product or if, in fact, the review was even legitimate?! Assembly was relatively easy - just needed a wrench and small socket set. The tiller body and frame feel well built. Once assembled it was quite sturdy. The kickstand worked without issue - contrary to reviews. I’m not sure the amount of oil that came with mine was enough, I did add just a little more. Filled with fuel and it stared right up! No issue with any buttons. The throttle was easy to use and easy to control. I was able to get a good start to a garden bed (about 10” x 10”) in about an hour. Initially was just grass and weeds with an occasional buried rock. I will have to go over the area again before planting but for the size of this tiller I was quite happy. I had an original Troy Built tiller many years ago and that was a beast - no comparison here but never expected it would be. The engine noise was surprisingly quiet. I can easily pick up the entire tiller with one hand (using the convenient handle). Very happy with my purchase so far -it did what it claimed it would do!!! ... show more

  • Lite weight powerful garden roto tiller
Style: Cultivator
I have used Mantis roto tillers for over 30 years. Easy to start, light weight. I use it to make seed and planting beds and rows. Very maneuverable in small, tight places. I get about 12 years out of each one. A new carburetor would fix up an old one.
