  • I'm Done With Gas Chainsaws
Size: Chain Saw Kit (Two 5.0Ah Batteries)
I've used a Stihl gas chainsaw for years. I'm so tired of hard starting (great exercise if that's what you want!) and replacing parts (carburator, ignition coil, air filters) and messing with gas and oil mixtures. I've had it with all of the maintenance required with gas engines. I was skeptical about battery operated chainsaws (do they have enough power? Does the battery last long enough to do the Job? How long do the Lithium batteries last? Manufacturer warrantee is for 5 years. Very good.) I just completed making 102 cuts in 6 to 8 inch pine logs and a dozen cuts in some very hard oak. The saw cut like a knife through butter. I realize that's a function of the very sharp Oregon chain that's included. But the saw didn't slow down a bit and I still had 1 bar showing on the two battery packs when I got done. I'm perfectly happy with the performance of the saw. The nice side benefits of this saw are: Low noise, you do not have to wear hearing protection like with a gas saw. No fumes and smoke. No messy gas to mix and pour! No gas to go bad from sitting around! No carburator to clean or change! NO IGNITION COIL OR SPARK PLUG to mess with. No vigorous hard starting exercise and NO CHOKE! God I hate unreliable small gas engines! I have wasted my time working on them for many years. I have no affiliation with Makita. This definitely is not a paid endorsement of their chainsaw. I paid full retain price for the saw on Amazon. I don't know if you should buy one or not but I am glad I did. I gave it to myself for Christmas! Addendum 6 months later: Today I took down a dead (and very hardwood) oak tree that died a few years ago. About 14 inch diameter. I bucked it down into 15 inch logs. (a couple dozen of them). The saw cut nicely through the hard oak. I was surprised. When I finished felling, limbing, and cutting up the logs I still had one bar (approx 25%) charge left. This really surprised me. I started with a new out of the box saw blade and was careful not to try to push through the cut but let the blade do the work. I am so happy to be rid of all gas driven chain saws, what a pain in the neck. Of course if I was a REAL lumber jock (jack?) a gas chainsaw would be necessary due to the higher power, capacity, and no charging stations in the woods!! Also the wider chains on the gas saws are much more rugged and less susceptible to damage. One of the disadvantage of the narrow kerf chainsaw blades (Oregon) is that the teeth can be stripped right off by a pebble in the bark or exceptionally hard wood when you do not maintain a smooth cut. Rough jerky cutting is hard on saws and the more delicate teeth are easily damaged. Like all chainsaws knowing how to sharpen my own blades is an economic necessity. Paying for sharpening costs almost as much as a new blade. ... show more

  • Perfect tool to keep a woodstove burning
Size: Chain Saw Kit (Two 5.0Ah Batteries)
The local repair shop told me that as a COG (Certified Old Goat) my problems starting and maintaining my Stihl is lack of strength to pull the rope and get the blasted thing started. Probably so, but the continuing litany of aggravations with it left me dreading my too often failed attempts to get it going and keep it going. I hedged on buying the Makita both on price and the feeling it might not be rugged enough to provide the cords of fuel for our woodstove, our main source of heat. After a month of use, I've never been more completely won over by any tool I've owned. I've had none of the complaints I've read here; maybe Makita had already addressed these by the time I bought. To start with the "positive negatives: • no gas. So no stink, chance of fire, slop in the workshop, trips to the gas station, or worry about oil mix. • no starting delay. I press the button, pull the trigger and it goes. Without fail. • no air filter to clean • no annoying tool to adjust tension. • no stalling. The button stays active for at least a minute and the trigger, again, just goes. • no kickback. I've cut logs up to 12 inches without a single instance of kickback. The thin Oregon chain chatters and stalls if it starts to bind, instead of trying to drag the saw (and you) into the log; lift the saw and it goes again. • no overheating (so far). Again, likely from not binding; almost never have to adjust tension. • no idling. Some of you may find this a problem, though I can't see why. Take your finger off the trigger and the saw stops dead. Hit the trigger again and it goes. On our rocky hillside, the Stihl would take a short walk downhill during idle; the live idling also, to me, represented a danger wherever I put it down. Clear positives: • lighter weight for my tired carcass. • near perfect balance. I make much straighter cuts; too often with the Stihl I ended up with a cut that angled down to the left because of the constant strain to keep it balanced. • I'd only out the Stihl for an all-day project. With the Makita, I can hop out and grab it to remove a fresh fall or small obstruction without delay or dread. • The batteries last me for 10-15 major (10") cuts or a good half hour of trimming; I haven't felt the need for a second set of batteries yet. Just go inside and get a snack during recharge. • I'm still on my first chain, without sharpening. The balance leaves me less apt to hit rock or earth; the two times I did nick light metal, it had little or no effect. One passing negative: Initially I couldn't get the thumb-controlled tension wheel to move easily; however a couple sprays with WD-40 seems to have stopped that. If you're a lumberjack or plan to spend the whole day decimating the landscape, this won't meet all your needs, even with the (wildly expensive) second set of batteries. But if you want to enjoy your time in the woods, it's a beautifully designed and executed piece of work. ... show more

  • Very powerful saw does a good job.
Size: Chain Saw Kit (Two 5.0Ah Batteries)
This is a very good tool. The battery life is great. The variable speed makes it more like a regular gas chain saw. There were many claims of the chain hopping off. All I can say get the chain on correctly and there is no problem. The saw does not start pushed against the wood. I think that this is a safety feature. You also do not start a gas chain saw against the wood. This saw makes nice clean fast cuts. The saw turns itself off if you do not use it for a time. This can be a little annoying but it is a good safety feature. After a lot of cutting you do need to stop and clean out the sprocket chamber. This is easy to do. Just flick the saw dust out if any collects. In short great tool Makita and non Makita batteries are very in expensive. ... show more

  • Easy to use
Size: Chain Saw Kit (Two 5.0Ah Batteries)
Great little saw. Easy to use, At first I thought it felt kind of heavy. I have never used a chain saw. But once I used it I found it to not be heavy at all. It has plenty of power for my purpose. It has a 16Inch bar. Perfect for small jobs. Very easy and simple to use. I love this saw. It was easy to put together in just a few steps. Chain is easy to tighten as needed. Chanrging station that comes with the batteries which is all included with the saw. About the charging station. I am more than a little confused about this. The indicator lights and the instructions are confusing. This happens frequently with foreign made things. I am concerned I am not charging the batteries enough or too much. Not sure about this at all. It is important not to over or under charge batteries. ... show more
