  • Yes, it has ability to switch between hammer and hammer drill
Bought as a replacement for a ~30 year old Black amd Decker model. Just got it and did some tests... so far so great. As another 1 or 2 reviews mentioned it does have the ability to switch between hammer only and hammer drill. Depends on the shank type. Our Bosch spline to SDS Plus chuck required some trimming of the cup/guard on the chuck, but it worked well. Very happy so far will update after some heavy use if it falls short. ... show more

  • CAN'T BEAT MAKITA QUALITY
I got the Makita Rotary Hammer HR4041C, successor to my last generation HR3851 when the older one started to malfunction after seven years of hard use. I often used it when I should have been using a demolition hammer. Unfortunately, sending a tool out for repair/rebuild can often cost as much as the new tool. And some parts get discontinued leaving you to search Ebay for “new-old” stock. Time to buy new. In fact, after ordering the new Rotary Hammer, I took the HR3851 apart and was amazed at the great shape it was in overall. It needs a few parts that aren't too expensive, so I am repairing it. Ereplacementparts.com has parts for most everything and techs who answer questions almost as fast as you can post them. I got the HR4041C and am pleased with it. 12 Amps instead of 10 Amps. Variable speed: I wasn't sure what that was about until I was switched from a 1/2” bit to a 1-1/4” bit and it occurred to me I should reduce the speed because of the larger diameter. The lower speed improved the hammer-drilling action of the large bit without slowing down the work. No switch for drill/hammer and hammer-only functions as on the predecessor HR3851: the chisels and tools that hammer only have a hex shank and no spline on the round end that goes in the drill chuck---don't engage the rotating chuck. So I guess they never needed the switch anyway. I couldn't think of a reason to miss it. The HR4041C is a couple pounds lighter and, I think, a little shorter than its predecessor. Nice when you have to hold it at shoulder height and such. You would think Makita would thrown in the “blow-out bulb” for clearing the powder out of drilled holes. It came with the older drill. A little plastic tube and lung power work as well though. The carrying case won't close if you don't spend a lot ot time arranging the cord carefully in the spaces around the drill. And there is no space for bits, chisels and other hammer-drilling accessories, so just throw yet another case in the trash and put all the stuff in an old suitcase or duffle Anyway, the HR4041C is a great tool. ... show more

  • Demolition Pleasure
We decided to remove the brick veneer on our fireplace. It went from floor to ceiling and was about 35 years old. After encasing the area in heavy plastic, I attempted removal with a hammer and chisel. Next up was to try my small Bosch hammer drill. Failure. So after tons of research, I ordered the Makita 4041C. It arrived one day early. I inserted the chisel into the chuck and off I went. It less than 45 minutes, I had completely removed the brick veneer. This unit was plenty powerful for the job and was easy to use. Now, I'm neither young nor strong. Yet, I had no problem handling this hammer. I have three additional projects ranging from floor tile removal to breaking up 4 inch thick concrete. I'm looking forward to equal success. I know that it is a lot of money for a non professional but the home centers wanted $40+ per day for rental and their small hammers were not nearly as powerful as this one. I checked Craigslist in So Cal and none of these were being offered. So, is it worth the price? The lowest estimates just to remove the floor tile and brick veneer was triple the tool cost. Heck, I'm retired and my time is free, so my answer is YES. Don't forget you MUST wear eye, ear and breathing protection when using this tool. Seriously, don't be foolish. Safety equipment is cheap. ... show more

  • Excellent value
I have a termite control crew fighting over this hammer. It is fast and reasonably light. the only ding is the fact it is equipped with only a "two pronged" plug. because we use a Protek interrupter at all times, our hammers must be equipped with a grounded (three prong) plug. Being pretty handy, I simply replaced the supply cord to convert the tool. This hammer drills hundreds if not thousands if 1/2" diameter holes through concrete slabs of varied depths each month and requires little maintenance. ... show more

  • Great Roto Hammer
I got this to replace a Milwaukee Roto Hammer that got stolen, I was very happy with my old Roto Hammer but this is so much better! Drills very fast with very little impact on the operator. I have used up to 11/2" without any issue
