  • Perfect home gym platform for hobbyist lifters on a budget
Style Name: New PLM03-Power Cage Weight Bench-Red
I’ll lead with the gist of it: I love this platform and feel like I got a great value for my money. If you want to get the best experience, put between $100-200 aside for upgraded attachments and accessories. Context: I’m 5-11”, 200lbs, intermediate lifter. I try to do heavy compound lifts and higher rep hypertrophy work, so I’m not using this thing for powerlifting or anything crazy. I bought this unit primarily for barbell bench, squats, cable rows, tricep extensions, flyes, and barbell overhead press. Spoiler: after a month of heavy use, it handles all of that extremely well. Assembly: Assembly was pretty straight-forward. I didn’t use the included hardware but opted for a socket wrench and my own wrenches. I used my own blue thread locker as well. It took me approximately 3 hours from stat to finish and I didn’t have help. While the included booklet sufficiently explains what parts go where, there’s not much beyond that. If you’re not super handy, this could frustrate you a little, but it’s definitely do-able. I would advise that you leave the bottom bolts a little loose until the unit is completely assembled. Use a level to ensure the unit is plumb and then tighten everything from there. If you don’t do this, the safety bars aren’t going to fit through the holes in the uprights and adjusting them will make a heinous metal on metal scraping sound that will take a year off of your life. Sturdiness: The power rack is pretty sturdy for what it is. There is, admittedly, some left-to-right lateral movement, especially when you’ve got a loaded barbell above waist height. Nothing major, but it’s obviously not as sturdy as thicker gauge steel, especially if you keep it free standing (not attached to a wall or the floor). I plan on bolting this into the wall in the future. This problem really shows itself if you have the cables set high and you attempt to push/pull off to the side of the unit—the whole thing will shift or feel like it wants to topple. Easy fix for me in the meantime. I just don’t use it like that! That said, I’ve loaded over 300lbs on the rack above waist level and don’t feel sketchy at all. Upgraded barbell holders would only add to my confidence, but as it comes, it’s just fine. I’d feel comfortable loading around 500lbs on this rack with some upgrades barbell holders, but the manual recommends staying below 330lbs. The welds on all of the major supports are uniform beads (no spot or tack welds) and have been finished to remove any sharp edges which is the source of my confidence in “overloading” the unit a tad. Be careful and use good judgment; everyone’s situation is different. Cable system: I’ve loaded the cables between 20 and 135lbs for various lifts and have been very surprised with how smooth it feels. Rows, rope extensions, pull downs, curls, flyes… very consistent tension throughout the movement. I’ve got really long arms, so I was relieved that the travel distance is long enough to allow for full range of motion on most exercises without the cable running out of room. Using any weight less than 20lb results in the track-guided part of the mechanism not having enough weight to return to the resting position without a little “coercion”. I don’t usually run into this problem during workouts, but my wife has while trying to do really light-weight hip abductions. Just a heads up. Also bear in mind, this system is only going to work when the weight is equally balanced on each side of the track. Definitely have some 2.5 lb weights for smaller incremental weight increases. Otherwise you’ll be jumping in 10-20lb leaps which isn’t ideal. Included attachments: There’s a lot to be desired here. At this price-point, the attachments are basically free so keep your expectations low. I purchased another manufacturer’s cable accessories for around $120 and it feels like I’m using equipment at a commercial gym. I’d include the price of upgraded attachments if you plan on using this as your dedicated home gym set. I haven’t used the dip bars… they feel weird. Definitely wouldn’t try anything weighted. I weigh 200lbs and the flex is real. This isn’t so much to do with the construction but more to do with the way the force is distributed to the cage because of the leverage. I have a set of tall parallel bars that I use instead and would recommend if dips are a regular part of your routine. The pull-up bar is a good size and feels solid. Before assembly, I would take the handles off the end of the pull-up bar and glue the rubber grips down so they don’t rotate. I’ve done 90lb weighted pull ups here and felt more than comfortable. The bench: This thing is solid! Feels as robust as a generic bench you would find at a commercial gym. It’s not incredibly high-quality, but it doesn’t feel cheap either—not in the slightest. The adjustment pegs allow for almost any angle between flat to straight up and down and it nests perfectly in each position. The leg geometry doesn’t predispose the bench to rock from side to side—it really feels like it wants to stay put. This doesn’t allow you to go into a decline, unfortunately. The cushioning is firm. No weird bolts or assembly pieces can be felt through the foam construction. The cover is a synthetic leather material that has some hefty stitching. I regularly use the bench headrest as a spot to rest my EZ bar between sets and haven’t noticed any wear and tear or material sagging. The wheels for rolling the bench work well; no squeaking or sticking. I would have been satisfied with paying around $300 for this alone. Conclusion: For what you pay, you can’t go wrong. I’ve read several reviews remarking that customer service is excellent and responsive. I freaked out a little bit when only one box arrived, so I reached out and someone got back to me almost immediately with more detailed tracking information. Just fyi (each box has its own tracking information). The bench might show up a day or so before the other 3 boxes. Every piece of this system feels like they did the best the could possibly do without charging Rogue prices. Now, this doesn’t feel like some lambourghini gym equipment, and if you expect that, you’re going to be disappointed. But you’re not paying for that either. In my opinion, this is absolutely sufficient for everything a hobbyist lifter would ever need. I feel like this power rack system fits neatly into this middle-tier category of gym equipment that the home-gym community needed. So, I would say this is worth more than what you pay for in terms of quality and functionality. If you’re willing to spend a little extra on upgraded accessories, you’re going to be happy with this. If you go through the hassle of buying brackets to stud-mount this and bolt it to the floor, this thing would be an absolute tank. I just can’t emphasize enough: put money aside to make this system work for you and the way you like to train and you will not be disappointed. ... show more

  • Great deal!
Style Name: 2023 PLM03-1400lbs Power Cage-BLACK
I have been using this thing for a year or so now and absolutely love it. I hate commercial gyms but love lifting, and this allows me to get a full workout in without going to the gym. I have the 22 edition which does not have the name plate in back, or pegs for bands. The good This thing is everything you need for a solid workout Cables are smooth Price is unbeatable When 2 pulleys were damaged in a recent move (movers packed it like idiots), I reached out to major lutie and had a very pleasant and quick response from the company The bad Slight lateral wobble, it has never been an issue for me, and I constantly do weighted pull-ups. The only time its noticeable is when doing real heavy cable work ie rows, you have to pull parallel to the rack, not angled at all. The lies (from reviews I read) Although the safety racks are thin, they work well. I even frequently do 1/4 squat jumps with this and bounce 275 off them and haven't noticed any issues at all. ... show more

  • Excellent Value
Style Name: 2023 PLM03-1400lbs Power Cage-BLACK
I don’t normally write product reviews but decided this purchase deserved to be recognized. I spent a lot of time researching similar products and then decided this unit was the best “bang for my buck”. I believe the Major Lutie PLM03 is an excellent value and perfect for the small home gym. All 3 boxes arrived together and on time. All items were well packaged, had no damage, and there were no missing parts. Assembly went okay. My only suggestion to the manufacturer would be that the instructions booklet be larger. I didn’t have trouble following the pictures, but the pictures were small. It took the 2 of us about 3 hours to unbox and assemble the PLM03. The rack seems stable and very well made for the price point. Pulley system has a little drag but again, for the price point it is great. We had our first workout with the new setup yesterday and we are excited about all the new exercises we can do now. It is a great addition to our home gym setup, and I think it will provide years of service. ... show more
