I started using this protein skimmer in February 2026, it has been reliable with very little noise. It was very easy to assemble and fit in my sump perfectly!! I am able to adjust the pump airflow with the turn of the knob!! I only wish at the time of purchase the larger skimmer was available!!

I’m fairly new to reefing and I did a lot of research on skimmers before buying this one. I checked local marketplace and Craigslist ads, compared about 20 different models online, asked chatGPT, etc.. I’m glad I chose this one for a few reasons. I read one review mentioning the noise level, but it’s silent.. I don’t hear anything while it’s working. It also works extremely well. Within two hours of turning it on, it began removing skimmate. It’s easy to adjust even for a rookie reefer. You can adjust the motor speed as well as the air/water intake so it was a breeze to fine tune it. The most helpful accessory is the overflow alarm. If it begins to get too full, the float rises in the skimmate cup, and sounds a low level beep from the controller. That’s awesome, because I don’t check it every day. I’m running it on a level 4 and it’s plenty of power for my 75g with a 30g sump. It fits well in my sump and leave room for other accessories. I was skeptical at first because it is a lesser known brand and not many reviews exist, but I’m glad I went with it.

Excellent skimmer. Not as finicky as others I have had. Set it up, small adjustment and has been pulling out nasty water. Love it! I do have the variable speed pump one, and feel that is definitely worth the extra $

First the good. It's quiet, efficient, easy to adjust, and has a small footprint for what accomplishes. The bad: the pump failed after 8 months and they are not currently carrying a replacement for the N100.

This is a great little skimmer, very quiet and compact. It works great, we are super happy with it. I would have given it 5 starts, but it did not come with this model's manual and assembly instructions- it was for the larger model which is totally different. The item listing has a video on how to assemble it, but it also is not for this model. I had to look at the picture on the listing to figure out how to put it together, which wasn't complicated.

JUNE 14TH, 20025 update// I Purchased a second MagTool skimmer (N130 Plus) with the puchase of a new sump. LOVE THE Overflow kill switch thats included. I added a second switch, still connected to my Neptune Apex. Still rate this a 5 Star item. There is a buzz humming from the pump at first, but all you have to do is put a small amount of pump grease on the impeller body and the pump becomes SILENT...//purchased in September 2024 (N170) and waited to give my complete review 90 days (Jan 2025). This Protein Skimmer (N170 Plus) is on a 108 Gall9n Mixed Reef System and stands with the rest of well known and top performing skimmers in my experience so far. Quietness is my biggest factor when picking a Skimmer and this has passed. There is a squant and faint humming sound from the pump doing it's job. Another factor is the DC control which give you the ability to crank it up or down. There is a inbed timer for the skimmer that will help prevent skimmer overflow once it is turned back on after feeding or maintenance for example. That timer can be overridden if you chose, but it is a nice included feature. The air value is very easy to operated, mine is attached to an Air Scrubber to help increase my ph, (8.40 during the day and 8.20 at nights). Skimmate is nice and thick with the help of my Automated Reefmat, my aquarium water is crystal clean. I have my skimmer controlled by my Automated Aquarium.controller... Neptune-Apex System..really great addition that has worked flawlessly since I installed it as a replacement.

I was using a bubble magus curve 7 on a red sea reefer 170 and the water level in my sump was not high enough for it to work properly so I started looking in Amazon for a replacement. Came across the Magtool R170 and I was impressed by the cost and good reviews so figured I'd take a chance. All I can say is I'm blown away at the performance of this skimmer all ready, I don't have to close the valve no where near closed to get it bubbling below the cup. The bubble magus was completely closed and the bubbles still wouldn't reach the cup. Another thing is to have a DC controllable pump at this price point is just mind boggling. I have pump turned all the way up and use the flow valve to control for wet or dry skin. It's also much quieter than the bubble magus. I will update in a few months if anything changes but if your on the fence about getting one I say GET IT !!

I've used several smaller skimmers for nano tanks but just completed setup of a 50 gallon saltwater tank with a sump and needed a larger skimmer. This was not only the perfect size to fit in my sump, within my limited cabinet space, but setup is very easy and it started skimming properly immediately! Zero break in needed! I love the adjustability and drain as well. Lastly, the air inlet for the pump comes with the same diameter hose as my CO2 scrubber which is bonus. Some of the other skimmers don't even have a way to connect the air inlet to a scrubber which is another reason I went with this one. This skimmer is fully serviceable with four nylon screws in the base for disassembly. I absolutely love this skimmer (did I say that already?)
