We wanted to add an electronic deadbolt for convenience of not carrying keys every time we go out of the house, especially walking our dogs. This deadbolt allows for that and so much more! Fingerprint, numeric code, RFID tag, remote by phone app or smart device such as Alexa, Google Home or such, just don't expect to carry and use a key. It does have a key lock hidden under a cover, but appears to be designed more for a backup as you will need to use the included tool (or a pin, pick or such) to remove the cover and the included keys are on the thin side, so not sure how durable they would be to be carried every day. This is not a deal breaker, just would be a peace of mind for someone who is first transitioning to an electronic lock/access. The only time I could see it would be needed, would be if the lock failed and the power happened to go out preventing me from entering through my garage door - pretty unlikely! The kit comes complete with tools you will need, even if a new install: Hole saw, spade drill bit and a screwdriver. I didn't use the included tools, but all appear to be much nicer quality than the typical single use screwdrivers that are sometimes included with DIY kits. Installation was straight forward with no surprise issues and works very smoothly. The Lockstar App was easy to setup as well. It allows for more code and fingerprint entries than most likely anyone could need for their home or rental. It is nice to have the various options for codes - permanent, one-time use, even a limited time-window use for one day or reoccurring. If enabled, the app will send a notification when someone unlocks the lock with the time and name. Once you register for your 2-year warranty, they will contact you via text and make sure everything is going well and to your satisfaction as well as emailing information about available features. They follow up and assure you are satisfied and happy with the lock. I highly recommend this unit to anyone thinking about adding or switching to an electronic deadbolt!

Pros: Easy installation, works as designed, fast software connectivity, easy to set up, looks great, reasonably priced. Cons: Requires 4 AA batteries (purchase separately). Summary: This is a great performing remote deadbolt. Be sure to follow directions carefully when installing. If you’re replacing an existing deadbolt, be sure that the latch opening in the door frame is deep enough and wide enough to accommodate the latch. The latch must be able to travel smoothly full length into the opening. If not, the lock will make a series of loud clicking noise as it tries to push the latch deeper into the opening. Using a narrow wood chisel or Dremel tool will make enlarging the latch opening easier. You may also have to cut a small section out of the frame to accommodate the fixed sensor, depending on the door frame trim. This package comes with everything you need to install the door lock including doorknob saw and wood boring tool to drill out the openings (in a new door), and even a Phillips screwdriver. If you’re replacing a deadbolt in an existing door, you won’t need any tools except the screw driver. The gateway device — a device that connects the lock to your WiFi and Bluetooth and to your smartphone — will need to be placed near the Lockstar lock. Mine is about 4 feet from the lock with no connection issues. With this setup you can control your door lock from anywhere using your smartphone. The lock can be accessed five different ways from outside: fingerprint, numeric passcode via keypad, keys, keyless sensor pads, and smartphone. Whenever I travel, my pet sitter comes in and takes care of my two cats. She has lost my regular door key twice. Now I can give her, her own numeric passcode to enter the house and not worry about lost keys, not to mention the security risk. The passcodes can be changed anytime as needed. Paired with a doorbell camera, the Lockstar lock is perfect for senior citizens or anyone with mobility issues. No need to get to the door. Simply unlock the door using a smartphone and telling the visitor (hopefully someone you know) through the doorbell camera to come on in. If you have a habit of forgetting to lock the door when you go out, no problem — the lock can be set to automatically lock your door as soon as it closes. The keypad is brightly lit when touching any key, making it easy to enter a passcode no matter how dark it is. Raining and no garage access? No problem. Simply unlock your door from inside your car using your smartphone. I am very pleased with the Lockstar lock. The only thing that would make it better would be for it to come with USB rechargeable batteries. However, the smartphone app has an indicator that tells you how much life your batteries have left so you can swap them out before they go completely dead. It would also be great if it came in different colors other than black, but not that important. What is important is safety and security and convenience, and the Lockstar lock has all that and more. Definitely worth 5 stars!
