So, my wife has always wanted a basket ball hoop. She's not looking to play games at her age (shhh ...) but simply enjoys shooting baskets. In comes this Lifetime portable basketball hoop. First thing you'll notice is the quality of this unit. It is solidly constructed. Setup is not too bad; just follow the instructions; yes, they are correct :-) Most of this can be done by one person, however, there are a number of steps where you really need two persons; e.g. when filling the base and when standing the unit up. As mentioned the actual assembly is pretty straight forward. The one place to really pay attention is when assembling the mechanism that holds the backboard; it has a swing arm assembly (goes up/down) that allows the height of the backboard (and hoop) to be adjusted. The metal pipes have holes at specific distances; carefully look at the instruction drawings, they show which goes where. If you miss it, no biggie; you can easily undo and switch or flip around parts [ask me how I know :-) ] The other item worth mentioning is filling the base. Our unit came with two approx. 1 inch diameter holes. If you plan to fill the base with water, that should work just fine. We did not want to use water, given the long-term concern over water getting slimy/smelly. We opted to use play sand. Now, here is the deal, those two 1 inch holes ain't gonna work. You have to plug up the hole closest to the pole ... check (that's the easy part). Next we did try to use a large funnel to put sand into the base (which initially needs to be positioned vertically. We quickly found out that was simply not happening with a 1 inch hole; whether the sand is bone dry or somewhat moist. Trying to get 300+ lbs of sand loaded seemed like it was not going anywhere. Some quick online research revealed several solutions but the best one by far is from the person who suggested using a (drain) test plug (thank you so much to that person on YouTube). We ended up getting a 4 inch diameter test plug (show as the red cap in the pictures of the base) and a 4 inch straight PVC coupler. I have plenty of home improvement/garage tools incl. a hole saw, so, I did not need to get anything else. (your mileage may vary there). The process involved using a 4 inch hole saw to drill a hole of similar size as the bottom part of the test plug. I positioned the hole saw such that the original 1 inch hole (near the back of the base) was near the inner edge of the hole saw, with the pilot bit positioned towards the center of the base (i.e., away from the back end of the base -- see the pictures and you'll get the idea). Once the hole was drilled, it was time to start filling the sand. The base has to be vertical initially. We found it easiest to use a small gardening hand shovel (the narrow type that gets mostly into a 4 inch diameter hole). You could go ahead and shovel the sand directly into the hole but may find more spillage that way. We used a straight PVC coupler (4 inch outer dia.; a $2+ item) that was fitted into the hole. Have one person hold the PVC coupler (to keep it from getting pushed into the base) while the other person hand shovels in the sand. The process is really not too bad and does not take nearly as long as it initially may appear. We had left our play sand bags outside and they got rained on; so, the sand was definitely damp; with the 4 inch filling hole, that was not an issue. Keep filling until the sand inside the base gets near the lower edge of the hole. At this point, remove the PVC fitting (if you used one) and stand the basketball unit upright. Continue to hand shovel sand into the base, periodically shifting it away from the hole and further into the base with your hand. Continue the process until the base is full. We ended up putting 6 bags (50 lbs each) into the base. Then put the drain test plug into the 4 inch hole and turn the wing nut to tighten the test plug seal; try to center the top part of the plug over the hole for a nicer seal; the top part of the plug is larger than 4 inches). Tighten the wing nut until nicely snug and presto .. done. Move the unit to where you want it. We placed it on our back patio; my wife is not looking too play any games, simply shoot hoops. The portable aspect makes it versatile as too where you want to place the unit for your intended use. Do keep in mind that portability takes a bit of effort given the full base (300+ lbs of sand). We moved the unit from our initial spot to a second, more preferred spot; so, we did get to test the portability of this unit. Place a step ladder next to the unit and push the bottom of the backboard up to the desired height; the mechanism will click into place at each stop. So, push into one stop and see if that's where you want it before pushing up on the backboard again. The unit comes with plastic trim for the lower part of the backboard. We opted not to use them; the unit looks fine without them and, to me, they look like they would trap water after rain. Now, for the fun part. This unit is fantastic. The built quality is solid, it looks good and is sturdy and steady. We've had high winds since we put it up and no issues with it staying in place. If you are looking for a basketball hoop for your home; whether placing it on a court, a patio, by the driveway, etc. this unit will do the job. It is solid and a solid value. Happy wife. My brother set up this basketball hoop on his patio sand since then he and his kids have something fun to do together at home, and it turned out to be a really great addition to their space. Once everything was set up, it basically transformed the patio into a little play area. The kids were excited right away, and even my brother ended up using it more than he expected. It’s one of those things that ends up bringing everyone outside more often. One of the best features is the adjustable height. Since his kids are different ages, being able to lower and raise the hoop makes a big difference. They can play comfortably without getting frustrated, and then it can be raised back up for more challenging play. That flexibility makes it feel like something they can keep using as the kids grow. The backboard is a good size and feels solid. It doesn’t look or feel cheap, and it holds up well during regular play. The rim is also sturdy enough to handle more active use, which is important because kids don’t exactly take it easy when they’re playing. The base adds good stability once filled. After he set it up properly, it stays in place during games, even when things get a bit energetic. At the same time, the built-in wheels make it easy to move if needed, which is helpful for cleaning the area or changing the setup. In terms of quality, everything feels durable, my brother says that the materials seem made to handle outdoor conditions, which is important since it’s staying on the patio. It doesn’t feel like something that will wear out quickly. Assembly took him some time, so it’s something to plan for, but it’s manageable if you follow the instructions step by step. Once it’s done, though, you don’t really have to worry about it again. What I like most is how much use it actually gets. It’s not one of those things that gets used once and then forgotten. The kids go back to it often, and it’s become a regular activity for them. For them, this has been a really good purchase for family use. It’s sturdy, adjustable, and fun for both kids and adults.
