The metal crossbar clips into a hard plastic bracket. Assembly was easy, we put J style kayak holder on the crossbars and before we left the drive way one snapped and broke right at the plastic portion. I installed this rack on my Platinum Sienna. It looks good and it seems solid enough. I'm going to put a roof case on this rack and I'll update this review if anything doesn't go well.
