Years ago, my dad gifted my son a mid-tier Spaulding portable hoop when he was about 6-7. It was great while it lasted, but didn't weather Utah winters or young kids climbing on it very well. This winter the backboard finally shattered, and with other broken plastics and bent metal braces and whatnot, I decided to just tear it down and replace it. In the $350ish tier, everything I was looking at seemed roughly the same as what I was getting rid of. With my bruiser son approaching 14 years old and nearly 6 feet in height, I wanted something sturdier, stronger, and more like a real gym hoop. So I did a bunch of YouTube video watching and review reading, and decided on this. Delivery took almost 2 weeks (11 days, exactly). Which is perfectly acceptable for something so large and heavy. We're all so spoiled with free 2-day delivery, sometimes we forget it's probably a money-loser for a lot of sellers on a lot of things. But truly, how quickly are you ever going to really need a basketball hoop? The box was pretty busted up by the time the final-mile freight delivery got to my driveway. I took a bunch of pictures of it just in case, but everything inside was secure and well packaged. All hardware, parts, etc. were accounted for and in perfect condition. As for assembly: I did it by myself. The instructions and most of the videos and reviews recommend a 2nd person. I agree that would be helpful in very small bursts for the assembly. You don't need a 2nd person for 98% of it. Unless you really want a gopher for tools and hardware, or have a kid-- not mine-- who wants to be helpful in a way that's actually helpful. The other 2%, it would be great, but if you're reasonably strong it's not crucial. They don't need to be right next to you the entire time, unless they like you and your music. Otherwise, the instructions are solid, all the parts fit well, and any other concern you may have from having put together cheap stuff (drilling out holes, sanding down bad welds, re-tapping crossthreads...) didn't ever materialize for me. It's well designed and executed. Once you've got the wheels and base filled with water (and I also used a gel designed for these applications) I don't find it to be all that easily maneuverable. But I think that's a good thing. If you plan on moving it around a lot, you might want to consider weighting it differently. The instructions ask for a 4' support at a certain part of the installation. I guess you could use a ladder or some other such thing. I used a Shopmate portable workbench, which wasn't quite tall enough for what it wanted me to do with it. But with that, some ingenuity, the packing cardboard, and a decent amount of experience in assembling stuff using hand tools, I made it work. The absolute hardest part of the whole thing was standing it back up when it was finished. But I'm only 5'9". A few more inches and that wouldn't have been an issue either. (I'm 50, but maybe "old-man strong"?) Like I said, a helper would have been nice for about 5 total minutes. All told, I did it in about 2 hours, solo. It is definitely more solid and better put together than the Spaulding. Thicker steel, more bolts, better hardware, stronger hoop, easier height adjustment, bigger and sturdier base... the only thing I'm not sure is categorically better than the Spaulding is the backboard itself. It seems stronger, is better supported, looks nicer, and is larger, but I'm not convinced the polycarbonate (or whatever it is) material will hold up better in the bitter cold winters. That said, it is quieter, more solid feeling, and has better ball response. My son loves it, and I can no longer hear the backboard noise. while he and his friends are outside shooting hoops. It's been a long, long time since I shot baskets on a legit indoor gym backboard, but this is in all ways a MUCH nicer basket to play HORSE or 1:1 on. And what kind of price can you put on that?

I'm going to go into some detail here as I had a hard time picking a hoop. You really can't go to the store and look at 10-15 so hopefully this helps some of you. I'll specifically be talking about the product itself in the review and then I'll add in the auxiliary stuff at the end. 1. Sturdiness: one of the important things for me was how much it feels like playing in a gym with a real gym model. Our neighbors have a different brand and it feels like a toy version as the ball "thuds," agains the backboard. It wobbles after hit as well. This one does not. The ball comes off the rim and backboard almost as good as a gym backboard. The base is solid and does not have any give (see below on the base). 2. Materials: The pole is steel and the base is a hard plastic (with steel frame underneath). The wheels are hard plastic. You fill both with water to weigh them down. The base takes 25 gallons (I didn't measure it but that's what the instructions say and it that seemed about right). So the base alone is around 200 pounds. The backboard actually isn't heavy at all (my 8 year old daughter helped to hold it up while I screwed it in). The rim is a standard BB rim. 3. Heigh adjustment: Pretty easy. I'd say a 10 year old and up could easily do it themselves. 4. Portability: with the base filled, it's pretty heavy. If you want a hoop you can easily move around, you'd have to fill the base far less or maybe go with a different model. 5. Backboard size: 54" is nice. I don't think I'd say you'd need 60". Our neighbors have a 44" and that feels way too small, even for elementary ages. 6. Looks: it really looks nice. All the neighbors commented that it looks very nice. 7: Kids' vote: I was curious if the neighorhood kids would use it. Of course they were at the hoop within 10 minutes of me setting it up. They are skipping over the other hoops in the neighborhood that aren't as good (maybe a bad thing if you don't want all the kids around). Other issues: these aren't things that matter to me personally but I know other buyers do. So here goes: 1. Shipping: was delayed by 3 days. I think it was 7-8 days received after ordered though. Not bad. I was expecting 10 days anyway. 2. Instructions: instructions are very good. Actually, I'll say excellent. Almost any kid product you have to put together always has some parts that just aren't 100% understandable and you do your best guess. These were not. I had zero issue understanding the instructions. 3. Time to build: they say 90 minutes. That wasn't my experience. Of course I had 3 kids bothering me half the time but 90 minutes seems like a pretty aggressive estimation. 4. Customer service: I thought I was missing a part (it ended up being in one of the main pole parts). They were friendly and responsive. 5. Tools needed: you need a large ratchet set. If you do not have a large ratchet set, you will need to get one. The standard size will not work. I did not purchase the assembly from Amazon but I should have. I didn't because we were to receive the product on a Saturday and assembly would have been a couple of days later. I knew the kids couldn't wait if we had it on a Saturday. The price is only $20 - pay to have someone do it. It's not terribly difficult but still, if you have enough to buy this thing, $20 isn't much consideration. Overall: I like how it feels when playing. Almost gym quality on a portable backboard. Very nice. Significantly better than similar models.

At this price point this is the best portable basketball hoop currently on the market. Don't skip go for the 54inch backboard like I did. The frame and base is incredible stable. The hoops does not rattle and shake but it is super stable when you miss shots. This is an incredible basketball goal, that makes you feel as if you are playing in the gym or playground. Yes it's that good and stable. I put this up myself and the directions were clear, but it was still a Herculean task. I believe it's truly a two man job ( Especially when attaching the backboard) but I went for it. No way this gets assembled in 90 minutes unless it's two people or more involved. If you can pay for assemble do it, if not start at the crack of dawn because you ,may still be doing the job during dusk. But definitely worth it. Don't be cheap get it. .

I settled on this hoop due to the high amount of good reviews and Silverback being a relatively well known brand. The price was also reasonable for what I figured was a high quality unit. Pros: assembly - It's actually a pretty easy hoop to put together if you have the proper tools. The directions are very basic and does a good job of keeping things simple while also guiding you step by step. You will, however, need another person to help you with certain steps. Sturdiness - The hoop felt very secure after I finished assembling everything. I'm naturally super paranoid of a hoop falling into my car whether it be during a storm of just from it tilting over. The hoop itself managed to be able to stay upright after tilting it vertically once assembled WITHOUT adding water to the base. Obviously you'll want to add water/Sand to the base but I found it pleasantly surprising that it was able to stand on its own just with the base as is. I filled the base with water(75% full as recommended due to snow and cold weather being common in my area). I do plan on buying a couple sand bags just in case. I'm still paranoid and on the better safe than sorry spectrum. Looks - The hoop itself is beautiful. I'm very into playing and watching basketball, and minus the Silverback logo in place of an NBA logo, the hoop looks like one of those fancy units they have at high end college parks. My girlfriend doesn't like that it blocks the view of our house but I think it's gorgeous. She'll learn I think. Cons: Draining the Base - from what I can tell, there's really nowhere to drain the base should you decide you wanted to do so for storage purposes if you maybe lived in an area that sees heavy winds often(like I do). I don't plan on storing it anywhere personally and will likely just keep it tilted over during the stormy season but I do think being able to drain the base and having that option would be nice. The Backboard - if you play basketball a lot, and are not just buying this for your kids, you'll know when a backboard is quality or if it feels cheap. While the backboard itself LOOKS nice, when I was at the step of attaching it to the base/pole, I was genuinely concerned about possibly breaking it if I made any sort of wrong moves. Normally I'd try to have a backboard lean on something but opted to have my girlfriend hold it up a bit while I connected the pins instead. The board itself was just a flat plexiglas type of material that felt super thin. I wasn't expecting actual NBA regulation glass but I expected something sturdier for a unit this price(the backboard, the base of the Unit itself is sturdy as I stated earlier). Overall the backboard feels a little cheap considering you're paying mid level prices. Neutral: Assembly time - I worked on this mostly by myself save for sections of the steps that required two people for sure( tilting the hoop horizontally, and then eventually back to vertical, and attaching the backboard/rim). That being said, 90 minutes is definitely not gonna happen unless you're fortunate enough to have a professional available to build it for you(I didn't). It personally took me roughly 6 hours to build( including a lunch break and taking breaks very often due to it being nearly 100F and humid. Had it not been for the extreme heat I'd say, a straight shot and building the hoop alone/getting help on necessary steps, 3-4 hours is a reasonable estimate for building this thing if you're a beginner and don't have all the necessary tools to make it easier(I basically used two small adjustable wrenches the whole time). I'd definitely recommend buying. A torque wrench if you're considering buying this. It would really help speed things up for a lot of the steps that took me a bit longer than usual. Special note: Delivery - I didn't let delivery impact my rating as, in my opinion, delivery of the product from amazon is not a fault of the product itself. That being said, I'd like to point out that this item is one where you need to schedule a delivery date as someone will need to be home to sign for it. Naturally, I picked the earliest date that fit my schedule, however I didn't get the hoop until exactly 1 week after my selected delivery date. The delivery company also failed to respond to my calls or email request when I was trying to inquire about the status of my shipment. To their credit, they did finally get into contact with me 3 days before the actual delivery, and did a good job of letting me know when the delivery team would show up. It just happened a week late. It worked out for me as my schedule has me free on select dates, but if your schedule is a bit more busy then this could be a problem. Conclusion: 4/5 stars. Overall I'm satisfied with the product. Looks great, the base is sturdy, and assembling it wasn't really an issue. Delivery issues aside, I do recommend this product. I do wish the backboard was a bit sturdier and less "plastic" feeling, though.

I was really impressed with the quality of the product. As I assembled it, my wife remarked how sturdy it seemed compared to another my son had recently played on. I really appreciated how all the parts and hardware were labeled or color coded. Downloading the manual from the website and watching the Dads Builds video before it arrived helped me ensure I had all the tools I needed. I was able to complete most of it myself, but my 11-year-old wanted to help, and I definitely needed my wife for the backboard assembly. I also appreciate that they're sending an additional basketball net now that I've registered the product for the warranty, although they should add a prompt on the form immediately beside the serial number entry box stating that the number is on the registration card and not in the manual-- versus just stating this atop the form. I ended up submitting the form twice. My son really enjoyed using this on Christmas Eve (loved the 3-day delivery), and the 7.5' lowest height setting is great to challenge him to get stronger because he's just short of being able to dunk on it at almost 4'9" tall. Overall, I was just really impressed with the quality, the stability, the look, the packaging, the spare parts. I almost never write reviews, but my conscience said I should this time. It kind of inspired me to do better work in my own job so that I can give customers the feeling I had after putting this hoop together.

My young-ish children and I put the 50" unit together in about four hours, though I probably could've done it in about two and a half with another adult instead (spent a lot of time letting the kids do the work so they'd learn a thing or two). I just can't stress enough how simple the assembly was. There wasn't a single step where we were confused, which is rare for this sort of thing. I found no good videos online, but the written directions were all that was needed. The only issue I'd mention is that, since you'll often have to hold the bolt head in place while you tighten the nut (or vice-versa), you'll need to use either two sockets of the same size at the same time, or one socket plus an end wrench or crescent wrench. So if you don't have two socket sets - or one socket set with both metric and standard - then make sure you have a set of end wrenches or at least a crescent wrench. All the bolt & nut sizes will work with either a standard socket/wrench or its metric near-equivalent. I have two sockets and ended up using 1/2, 5/8, 10mm, 16mm, 17mm, 19mm. There's a step where the instructions say you'll need an end wrench, but the socket fits in fine. Later, you'll put some things together that will preclude the socket from fitting in there, but during the assembly you'll be fine without the end wrench if you don't have it. The only other tools you'll need are a Phillips screwdriver and maybe a hammer (though we didn't need one). We began with our assembled hoop on the concrete of the driveway, where it was really super stable (i.e., it barely moves at all when the ball hits the board or rim) but to create another three feet of playing depth, we pushed it onto the grass. It did lose a tiny bit of its stability, but nowhere near enough to be a problem, especially since we now have 15 feet of depth instead of 12. That combined with almost 40 feet of driveway width gives us all we need for our purposes. Lastly, while I'd love to have a 54" board, the 50 inches really are plenty - no regrets at all about not spending the extra 200 bucks or so. I've never used the Lifetime 54" that goes for about the same $400, but after reading about the difficulty in assembling it, I feel totally confident that this was the better buy, at least for what I personally was looking for. All in all, as you can tell, I am very, very pleased with this purchase.

I recently purchased the Silverback NXT basketball hoop, and I have to admit that I have mixed feelings about it. In this review, I will detail both the positive and negative aspects of the product. First and foremost, I must commend the ease of construction. The instructions provided were clear, concise, and well-written, making the assembly process incredibly smooth. I managed to set up the hoop without any trouble, thanks to the step-by-step guidance and detailed illustrations. This was a major plus, as it saved me time and frustration. I recommend two people to do the job. 5/5 However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment after I started using the Silverback NXT, considering the price. The backboard sturdiness was a little concerning on deeper shots, especially at angles. Play overall was average and no issues with the net and/or connection to the rim. The rim was sturdy. 2/5 Adjusting and locking into position for the different heights is extremely simple with balanced springs. Moving this thing is an almost 2-person job. It’s heavy and awkward to move. 3/5 Additionally, I experienced a major issue with the backboard’s durability. After a light windstorm, I was shocked to find the Silverback NXT had been blown over. I had followed the instructions carefully and ensured that it was properly secured, but it still failed to hold up against the mild weather conditions. I had it in my grass, so I thought that was on me. My neighbors who I gave my old one to, stayed standing, also in the grass. I checked the level of the base, making sure it hadn’t leaked any water and it was topped off. I then moved it from the grass to the (level) driveway concrete. Sure enough, the next storm with a bit of wind blew it over, bending the frame. As you guessed, the design flaw is not covered. The support member on the bottom bent, no issue at the weld but rather bent when it fell into the grass. The acrylic buckled but is still intact. The wind was about 15mph, maybe up to 18, not exactly sure. My old hoop was upright in my neighbor’s yard unaffected by the wind. 1/5 In conclusion, while the Silverback NXT basketball hoop boasts easy assembly, its lack of sturdiness and durability are significant drawbacks. The unstable backboard and susceptibility to damage make it difficult to recommend this hoop for long-term use. If you're in the market for a basketball hoop, I would advise considering other options that offer both ease of construction and lasting durability. Update. Filled with water and had bricks on it and it fell over again. Caused $4k+ damage to my truck.

As others have indicated, there is no way this can be assembled in 90 minutes. That being said, the assembly instructions are clear and put together well. There are 41 steps. Only one step had an error, it listed in the manual that you needed item 48 when in the box it was 40. Other than that, the instructions were really good, everything was nicely labeled, and the tools were nicely indicated. The net is solid. It looks great. I am happy with this purchase. Even though it was not easy to assemble, it was actually a somewhat enjoyable activity over the last week, it felt good when we first pushed it upwawrds. From other reviews I understand I should put the net on the ground if high winds are expected, or if I am going on vacation for a while. I can live with that. Overall, it is well-designed, solidly constructed, and worth the money.
