  • Well Worth the difficult assembly
Oooookay...Now that we have it put together I must say this is a really well built, quality set up. I read the other reviews listing complaints concerning a tough and lengthy assembly of which I scoffed at as I have been spinning wrenches for decades and have amassed a rollaway of tools any mechanic would be proud of. That said, this 2 day 4-5 hour assembly was at times maddening. I would get something figured out and assembled only to have to disassemble it because of one thing or another. The directions at times seem good proof, with in depth illustrations and quite brilliant how they made most things so they could only fit just one way and only where they belong. Then other places its just down right confusing and of course when they give you too many of one bolt and none of another it leads to second guessing what your doing wrong until you figure out you need a couple bolts not there , which I had in my junk bins. Don't try to tackle this by yourself , enlist a friend that'd smarter than you to figure out the directions. The actual act of turning wrenches was quite easy. If you get this, and in my opinion you should as the finished product is well worth the money and time spent. Once your practicing your jump shot, and see how nice this thing is you'll smile like I did. The raising and lowering is smooth, just don't overtighten the bolts going through the poles involved in raising/ lowering the ones with the plastic bushing or they will bind making it tougher to operate. One other bit of advice, don't force anything. If something doesn't fit or the bolt is too short or long, stop, take a break and revisit the direction book because if your doing it right, everything fits easily, just as it should, if it isn't , your doing something wrong. Once I would figure out a screw up, disassemble the part And then reassemble it correctly Id feel somewhat stupid and at the same time appreciate the engineering imvolved and the quality of the parts they put into this. Okay, all that said would I purchase this again ? Absolutely 100 percent, my boy loves it and I enjoy sinking a few myself. If your not mechanically inclined or don't own a couple sets of wrenches, get a friend to help that is smarter than you and borrow some wrenches, you'll be glad you did. This goal is replacing one I purchased a year ago for about half the price , total piece of junk that got put out of it's misery a couple weeks ago by the straight line winds we get this time of year here in Arizona. This new goal with it's huge base and heavier poles won't be phased. The build wasnt fun, but the finished product was worth the effort. My giving this 5 stars after all the whining should tell you something. Hope this helps you decide. ... show more

  • Quality Basketball Goal
My daughter had gotten a cheaper goal for her boys, but it only lasted a year before the backboard disintegrated. I shopped around for a better one and selected this product. I'm hoping for much better longevity with this one. The components are all high quality and go together pretty well and painlessly. I have a long history of assembling all kinds of things around the house, and here's my impressions of putting this together. First, I really liked how all the bolts, nuts, washers, etc, were packaged into separate bags for each major step in the assembly. Just open the bag they tell you when they tell you and you're in good shape. Be aware that there are a few small parts (for instance a small bracket) that are packaged together in a "miscellaneous parts" bag. That threw me for a bit - thought I was missing that bracket for a while. Second, the instructions are pretty good, but could be better. The information is largely conveyed in pictures (like most assembly projects these days), but in some cases the pictures need to be larger so you can tell exactly which hole the bolt goes in. Third, many, if not most of the steps have a video you can watch to help you out. Just scan the QR code printed for that step, and you'll get a video of someone walking you through the step. I actually did one of those when one of the large bolts wouldn't fit easily where I thought it should. They guy in the video mentioned that was often the case, and to just get a little of the powder coat off the part and all would be good. Fourth, thumbs up on customer service. One of the nylon bushing spacers 'escaped' down a hole and I had to call customer service to request a new one. I left a voice mail message stating what part I needed, and Lifetime called back in about an hour to get my address and put one in the mail, and it arrived 3 days later. I got the entire unit assembled by myself, though I did have my wife hold things steady while I stretched the spring for the height-adjustment mechanism into place. When you get it upright, though, you are definitely well served to have a helper hold it up while you start filling the base. I set up a 'Little Giant'-type ladder in the four foot stepladder configuration and had my wife sitting on that. With the basket at the lowest position, it was easy for her, even with a little wind. I chose to put as much sand in the base as possible and then top off with water for maximum weight. I was using very coarse sand that was damp, so it was a time consuming chore, but in the end it made the unit feel secure. Just for good measure I put a few Pavestone retaining wall type bricks on the base and finished it off with the last bag of sand that I couldn't get inside the base. (The first unit we had blew over a couple of times, and I really don't want that to happen with this one.) The height adjustment mechanism on this is very nicely done. Very simple for me to use, and I think my nearly twelve year old grandson will be able to work it just fine. One final nice touch - a pad that straps into place around the pole in case you whack it with your elbow or head. Bottom line: I'm impressed with this and hope it'll last a long time. ... show more

  • great hoop for 9 year old
My 9 year old daughter wanted a basketball hoop for her birthday. Not knowing what her long term commitment would be to basketball I though this would hoop would be a good starting point. I will just echo the comments of a few of the other reviews regarding the assembly. I am probably average, or slightly below average in terms of my mechanical/assembling ability. I did find that assembly was tedious and at times frustrating, but overall not too bad. I assembled by myself with occasional help from wife to hold up the pole or other pieces. It would have been a lot easier with another person. I actually found some of the bolts and/or nuts that were delivered with the product were defective and could not be tightened down properly, so I had to visit the hardware store and purchase replacements. The bolts were a non-standard size but I got the closest size and seemed to work fine. Lifetime would send replacements of course, but I did not want to wait for the delivery. It took me, all told about 6 hours over two days (I took my time and went very slow), including the additional trips to the hardware store. A socket wrench kit and a second good set of wrenches is an absolute necessity. I tried to fill the base with sand. This turned out to be completely futile. The sand I purchased was a little damp (humid North Carolina summer), and would not pour through any size funnel into the base. I considered trying to dry out the sand, but this just seemed like a possible huge waste of time, so I abandoned the sand for water, which was simple, and I added RV antifreeze. The RV antifreeze is less toxic and I did not want to poison our cat or other neighborhood pets. However, after I filled the base with water I found out about a product called H2OLD base gel which I purchased from Sports Authority (~$20), and seems like the way to go. Apparently sand is also pretty much impossible to remove from the base once it is filled. The base gel stuff increases the density and weight when combined with water but then can be deactivated with table salt so the base can be drained again. I have not yet drained the base and used the base gel, but probably will soon before we get too many freezing temperatures. In terms of playing basketball, the hoop is perfect for my daughters and their friends. Adjusting the height is so easy and it seems very stable (though not for dunking, etc.). We use it nearly every day, and it has already been fine through a few pretty big windstorms. The backboard is pretty responsive and really does not move around too much. My daughter's shot has already improved considerably! All in all a good investment and should bring hours of fun for me and my kids and help hone their basketball skills. ... show more

  • Awesome quality, lots of fun
Here is the good: Very well made and high quality basketball set up. The handle that moves it up and down for various height (8’-10’) is easy to use and slides smoothly. The components are all great. Solid and durable. The base can fit enough water so it won’t top over. I called customer service for a part and they were great to work with. They sent the part no questions asked. Here is the bad: it took 3 hours to build and I can build stuff without a problem. building it requires a rocket science degree and car mechanic tools. The instructions leave you wondering often. The grouping of the screws is completely illogical. They have screws from step 20 mixed with tools referenced from step 6 or 8 with 15, etc leaving one wondering which ones are correct. You may not know what I mean now but when you start building it you will realize this is the one big failing of this product. Then the tools. Regular household tools won’t do the job. You really need automotive tools and other specialty tools. So the manufacturer should either include the tools in the box and charge extra or Use regular screws. You will need a second person towards the final steps to combine the board to the pole. 48” board seems odd and short. Not the manufacturer fault. So choose the 52” at a minimum. ... show more

  • Great choice for first "real" hoop
I did a lot of research before selecting this hoop. We were looking for something that would be durable enough to grow with our 9-year old without costing an arm and a leg. We put it together last weekend and are very happy with our choice. First, the assembly process. Everything in the box was clearly labeled, and we especially appreciated that the hardware for each large step was packaged individually. I would strongly recommend investing in a second wrench set if you don't already have one - my husband thought he could make do with just one and couldn't (leading to a 1st quarter run to the local Home Depot). Including the run for supplies, we put it together in about 5 hours over two days. The bulk of the assembly work is doable by one adult but it was necessary to have two of us around for a couple of the positioning steps (holding the backboard in place when it needed to be attached to the pole, etc.). Assembly itself was completely straightforward and easy. After reading several reviews, I planned to fill the base with sand but changed my mind after getting the set and realizing that there was no way to remove the sand once it's been filled (the only plugs are on top of the base). If we used sand it would be difficult to reposition if we ever wanted to move it - so we opted for the liquid option. We filled it with a mixture of anti-freeze and water, and put an additional 100 lbs of sand in bags on top of the base. We'll see how this holds up through several northeast winters, but I have high hopes because my neighbors have successfully done the same. Fully assembled, it's fairly sturdy. The adjustable height handle is a snap to use. All in all, I'm very happy with this hoop and look forward to us getting a lot of use out of it for the next few years. It'll likely be too lightweight for our son when he's 17, but it's a great set for us now. ... show more

  • Great quality
It took several hours and 3 adults who have a lot of experience assembling things to get this basketball hoop together, but now that it is, I have to say I made a smart purchase! My three adult kids and twin granddaughters play use it every time they are at my house, at least weekly. We filled the base with water so that in the winter it is easy to move and store and I have a heavy bag of stones on it for added weight. ... show more

  • Great Basketball Hoop!!
We are 7 months into ownership and I couldn't be happier with it!! The height adjustment bar is very easy to use. An older child could do it themselves, and it all seems very stable and well constructed. It took awhile to get the unit together. You definitely need two people for assembly. When it came time to attach the rim to the backboard, I leaned the hoop assembly onto a saw horse. That made it simple to finish the install. The instructions were thorough and easy to understand, unlike some reviews of other brands I was looking at. I would highly recommend adding sand to the base, and not water. I live in a very windy area, and with the sand, I've had no trouble with the hoop staying put. Neighbors around me have had their water filled hoops fall over. It took a long time to add the sand, but it was well worth the extra time. Please remember to dry the sand out before adding it; it saves a ton of time!! This is a great basketball hoop!! ... show more

  • Great Choice for a Portable Hoop (UPDATED 5 years later!)
UPDATE: Year 5 (Oct 2016) and I'm happy to say this is one durable product. I'm still on the original net, and I've left it outside year-round since Day One. Best. Purchase. EVAR! UPDATE: Year 2 (Aug 2013) and this bad boy is still in great shape. Still no faded paint, no rust, original net, still filled with water through the winter. Again, this equipment has been set up and left outside for 2 full years and still looks and functions like new. Upgraded from 4 to 5 stars after considering overall quality and durability. UPDATE: After having this up for the entire year (Aug 2011 - Aug 2012), I'd like to report that it is virtually identical to the first day I set it up. Great durability, no faded paint, backboard still in great shape, left the base filled with water all through the winter, net still in good shape, etc. Still sturdy, solid, and strong. BEST... PURCHASE... EVAH!!!! ----- Overall, I'd say the Lifetime 51550 Courtside Portable Basketball System is an excellent choice for anyone looking to buy a portable hoop system. PACKAGING: The box itself is pretty big, although I'd say it's as small as they could make it while still containing all of the parts, the largest pieces being the base and the backboard itself. There's a lot of little hardware, but all of it comes packaged in several bags, all of which are clearly marked and numbered. INSTALLATION: I rate the quality of the installation instructions very highly. The first few pages indicate all of the individual parts, which numbered bags they can be found in, and what that part is used for (backboard assembly, pole assembly, etc.) so there is no confusion. Then when you actually start the assembly, at the top of each page, they show what tools should be used and what parts you will be assembling. It's really very easy to put together, and I read online that others estimate around 3 hours to put it together. I took my time, though and it probably took me about 5 hours, including the time it took to go through and make sure I had the right number of parts for everything. TO FREEZE OR NOT TO FREEZE? (UPDATED) Another point to note is that while Lifetime indicates you can fill it with water or sand, others online recommend against sand because it is very difficult to get out if you ever need to. I would definitely recommend going with water. Others online also recommend using a combination of water and anti-freeze for colder climates, but Lifetime specifically indicates that you do NOT need to use anti-freeze, that the base is made from a material that will expand if the water inside freezes. (UPDATE: I've had the hoop set up since the summer, filled with just water, and as of 2/1/2012, it's still fine. Our winter temps so far have been around 15-35f, with some crazy daily fluctuations causing regular freezing and thawing, and the base is still in perfect shape.) MISC: As others have noted, once the unit is assembled, it's very easy to adjust the height of the backboard using a one-handed operation. The backboard itself is of a decent size, and the rim is built to withstand jams. It also comes with a nice wrap-around pad to protect kids from smashing their head into the pole, and a height adjustment sticker that shows the adjustment from 8' to 10' in half-foot increments. CONS (UPDATED): One thing I have noted is that there is a good amount of "give" when the ball hits the backboard (i.e. the backboard wobbles), so the rebound ability of the ball is affected. Not greatly, but don't expect the same rebound response that you'd get from a permanent backboard. It could just be that I need to get up there and tighten all of the bracket bolts, but they were pretty tight when I first assembled it, so I assume it's just an effect of the portable system. (UPDATE: I've since determined that most of the wobble is due to the fact that I have the base on an somewhat uneven surface, and so it doesn't have the same stability as when it is on a flat surface.) IN SUMMARY: Still, a great buy. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable hoop. ... show more
