The quality of a Le Creuset is so far superior to any other brand. Yes, we've tried the lower priced dutch ovens but here is what sets Le Creuset apart--heat distribution is PERFECT! The ceramic lining is perfectly smooth--not even any "orange peel." It is lighter than the cheaper brands but, heaviness does not equate to a greater oven. The iron is at a thickness that ensures perfect heat distribution and timing to reach desired temperature. I have used other brands in the past but, NONE out perform a LeCreuset. Buy once--cry once. They are expensive for a reason--they are QUALITY--and you'll notice the difference the first time you use it if you've tried cheaper brands. ... show more

I really love all aspects of the piece, but i think the thing that sets it apart the most, is that the lid is heavy enough to dramatically help keep the steam from escaping. This makes the dish more flavorful, because you don’t have to add more water, which blands it down and also you don’t have to worry as much that it scorches or dries out and is super easy to clean afterwards. ... show more

It's not inexpensive, that's a given. I like the light color interior - it makes browning easier. It's built like a tank and I have little doubt about longevity. The exterior color is beautiful. I'm getting two more of different sizes.

If you truly enjoy cooking, this is worth the cost. It's better than the cheap knock offs in terms of heat distribution, cleaning, and durability. Forget the temptation and color choices of the variety of cheap options - they don't compare when it comes down to performance. We use it often and it is well worth it. Abstain from less than a dozen meals out by cooking something enjoyable at home and you have made back the cost and then some....and it will last you for years and hundreds of uses beyond that. ... show more

Reviews say that a dutch oven is fantastically versatile and belongs in every kitchen. They also say the Le Crueset is the best. Not much to say other than "Right on all counts". Might be a better value out there but not a better dutch oven.
