  • Worth it to get the jumbo
Size: Large
Definitely worth it to get this one vs the cheaper smaller ones if you use a lot of bigger skeins or even blanket yarn. It holds an entire normal sized skein of Bernat blanket velvet which is 10.5 oz. And I got a skein of Bernat blanket speckle completely cakes after only using enough to make a small turtle shell. Worth it to spend the extra money to get this one I think. Takes some getting use to but there are some reviews & tutorials on YouTube that can help. Definitely recommend. Happy crafting! :) ... show more

  • You will need duct tape
Size: Large
I love this product. It has one flaw that can easily be fixed with duct tape. The rod that is tall and fixed to the bottom of the machine is unstable even when tightly screwed down. If you tape it to the surface, it works perfectly. See the picture. Otherwise, it works great and I will enjoy it. Thank you! ... show more

  • Great Buy!
Size: Ball Winder&Yarn Umbrella Swift
I went back and forth between this and an identical looking product that cost double the price. I do not regret my choice! The product works better than I could have hoped. After years of winding yarn balls by hand I wish I would have made this purchase years ago! If you are skeptical on the quality of this product compared to one that is more expensive, take my word for it and just buy it because you will not be disappointed!! ... show more

  • This works fairly well, and may have one small advantage over Stanwood
Size: Large
TL;DR This winder can handle a 10.5oz skein of Bernat baby blanket yarn with no problem, whereas the Stanwood unit I received could not. Apparently this Amazon winder has a slightly longer winding arm, and that gives it enough clearance to wind the full skein of Bernat. Full review: I bought this winder because I wanted to test the Stanwood style. Overall this worked fairly well. I had a little bit of trouble threading the yarn at times, but it was not a big deal. This winder is able to handle a full 10.5oz skein of Bernat baby blanket yarn with no problem, provided you tension the yarn a bit while winding. I had some slight issues in winding DK weight and fingering weight yarns in that the cakes came out slightly oblong. It isn't a huge deal, though. However, there was one annoying thing, and that was the crank would squeak frequently while turning. The plastic handle is not going to fall off or anything but it was a bit loose, so that might be why it squeaks. I liked this Amazon winder enough that I decided to buy the Stanwood one. I just received the Stanwood today. I discovered that overall the Stanwood winder is superior in every way to this Amazon one, except for one small issue that I will address in a moment. The plastic handle on the Stanwood is much more secure and does not squeak at all. It also winds DK and fingering weight yarn into a more normal-looking cake, which I really like. The only thing that I don't like is the Stanwood (at least the one I got) is not able to wind a full Bernat skein. At first, it only got about halfway through the skein before it stopped winding because the winding arm was hitting the cake on the bobbin. I carefully took the cake off the bobbin (which was easier to do than with this Amazon winder because the Stanwood has a single twist at the end of the winding arm, as opposed to the multiple twists on this Amazon one) and I tried winding it again, but this time I put some very heavy tension on the yarn. Even with that, it only got to about 90% before the winding arm started hitting the cake. I kept pushing through, but it only made it to the last couple of revolutions and then it stopped. I was frustrated at that, especially since that cake was VERY tight and I almost couldn't pull it off the bobbin. I measured the winding arm from the bent part out to the ring where you thread the yarn and discovered that this Amazon unit measures 5 inches while the Stanwood unit only measures 4.5 inches! I'm very disappointed because I was hoping the Stanwood would be able to handle a Bernat skein without any problem. I contacted Stanwood to find out if my unit is defective or if that span of the winding arm is only supposed to measure 4.5 inches. So now I am not sure what to do. The Stanwood works so well with every yarn except the huge bulky skein of Bernat. Thankfully I only have a few of those. In any case, I really would rather not keep this Amazon unit over the Stanwood just because of that. I'm just disappointed that the Stanwood has that issue. ... show more

  • Does the Trick but Read all the Reviews
Size: Ball Winder&Yarn Umbrella Swift
Heavy duty and can do small or large cakes of yarn. Infinitely better than rolling by hand. But as others complained, I believe mine, too, was a return, poorly packaged for resale. It was not hard to assemble, as some have mentioned, because it was partially assembled in the box. So it was very easy to set up and figure out how to use. The shipping carton was rough and the product carton look like it had been kicked around the warehouse floor and was taped on a couple of sides. Further, as some people complained the washers and screws are difficult to work and didn’t hold. During the course of rolling five skeins of yarn I had to continuously tighten all of the pieces. The umbrella piece for holding the yarn was not large enough for the skeins of yarn that I had to roll, in fact it was at least 6” too small even fully extended. I ended up having to use my left hand as an additional yarn guide. Overall, it’s a great starter yarn roller and it’s great that it comes an umbrella swift. 100% better than doing it by hand so I’m glad I have it. I passed up one of the expensive beautiful wooden ones at an estate sale last year and I am forever sorry that I did not buy it as I think that upgrade is worth it if you do a lot of yarn. ... show more

  • Sturdy Winder
Size: Large
I very much like the fact that this winder has metal parts and a large yarn cake capacity. I attached it to my working table where it will stay and is available any time. The assembly is easy. It took me a moment to notice that the tension controller (right angled metal part) should be fastened under the washer of the wing nut, it does not grip otherwise. Using the winder is easy, if one is willing to stop and refasten the wing nut intermittently, which is a necessity ( and a bit annoying) to stop the tension controller from coming loose. Having looked a quite a few wool winders and prices, I do think it worthwhile to buy this product. ... show more

  • Great Yarn Winder for Larger Yarn Cakes
Size: Large
Compared to my previous winder this one is very sturdy. The crank is smooth and easy to wind. It makes a good sized yarn cake. The only con, and it is minor, is the long angled arm that you first loop the yarn through giggles a lot while winding unless you move the crank very slowly. When it jiggles a lot, the yarn can work its way out of the loop and get tangled. Still, it is a minor con. Overall, it is a great yarn winder. ... show more
