  • Buy it if you need it - totes worth.
Color: Purple
At only $20 I didn't have super high hopes, but this ball winder exceeded my expectations with flying colors. TL;DR worth the money. Get one in your fave color. I bought the purple one - not that the color should matter - and promptly lost the box in my craft room for a couple days. After it reemerged, I set it up on my work desk to take care of a spaghetti mess from a frogged project. Packaging was minimal and setup was easy and intuitive; the instructions were right there on the outside of the box - no need for additional paper and printing. +1* for that. I didn't bother reading the other side of the box on how to operate it since I've watched enough yarn-tube vids to understand the general idea and my bestie has a winder that looks similar enough in construction that I've used exactly once in the past - more on that in a bit. Loop-tee-doo-ed my worsted cotton yarn through the guide arm, wrapped it a couple times around the shank and stuck the tail into the slot at the top, then started cranking. Oh my goodness - the gears are smooth as butter. The comparison benchmark was my bestie's grindy, jumpy, crotchety, "well loved" (and neglected) winder and this new, shiny Knit Picks beauty was such a breeze to operate. To say I had a triumphant smug smile on the whole time I was cranking that handle would be an accurate statement. Ok, story time is over, but I wanted to point out - yes you can unscrew the shank, detatch the table clamp and pull the guide arm out a little and fold it back in to get it back in the box... but I didn't bother. It's super easy to put together, a delight to operate, and easy enough to put back away into its box yet company enough to leave out. And it does what it is advertised for - it winds yarn in a pretty, functional cake. I've wound a whole, uncut skein of Hobby Lobby mercerized cotton yarn that I frogged from a project easily; I've wound a tiny scrap mini-cake of light acrylic; I've wound that medium cake of worsted cotton I mentioned earlier. I've got two more projects to frog of light bamboo and I have no worries that this winder can tackle them all. Ultimately the decision is yours to make, dear reader, but if you're looking for an affordable entry-level winder (btw I'm still a beginner to the fiber arts - been at it since March 2026 (it's May 2026 at the time of writing this)) please consider this one. ... show more

  • Gets the Job Done Gets the Job Done
Color: Purple
It takes some techniques to get your yarn cake the way you want it. I pinch the yarn through my fingers to get a tighter cake, and I hold the yarn low almost at table level as I feed it which keeps the yarn on track especially as the cake gets larger. So far I really like it and it seems to work well. It wiggles a bit and squeaks at times but it gets the job done at a good price. ... show more

  • Quick and easy for a casual knitter. Quick and easy for a casual knitter.
Color: Purple
This yarn winder is so helpful! I’ve never had one before. It’s just to help tidy and store half used skeins from finished projects. It took a couple minutes to set it up. There weren’t any instructions, but it’s pretty basic and logical. It took two tries to get a neat spool of yarn. The first one was a ridiculous mess because I didn’t hold the yarn with enough tension. A big puff ball! But now my old messy yarn is in neat little yarn pods to store! It’s so much fun to use and it’s so much faster than winding it by hand! Just got this today, so I can’t vouch for durability, but so far so good. It’s pretty sturdy and very easy to use. ... show more

  • Works well, a bit squeaky after a while
Color: Purple
Works very well! After using it for a while, it started squeaking loudly when turning the handle, but a bit of WD-40 solved the problem. I’ve had no problems since. It’s quite easy to set up and use, although the cakes can’t get too large, otherwise the yarn slips off the top of the cake.

  • Be Gone Jellyfish Yarn Messes!
Color: Purple
After seeing this used by one of my favorite YouTube crochet creators, I decided to give this KnitPicks Yarn Ball Winder a try. With so many yarn ball winders to choose from, and with them all looking very similar, I had no idea which one to pick. This unit does not disappoint! It's very simple and straightforward how to put it together, it attaches easily to my desk, and I was a little concerned because the "foot" that holds the winder to my desk was a little floppy once screwed into the winder itself, but once I attached it, everything was snug and not floppy at all. This thing made quick work of frogging an almost 6 year old half done project that I was seriously not looking forward to taking apart. Within 30 minutes I had this winder out of the box, put together, attached to my desk, the 6 year old project frogged in addition to a seriously tangled up jellyfish yarn ball mess that I was also able to wind back up again. It was quiet, seemed sturdy once attached to my desk, and made quick work out of a project that seemed rather daunting to begin with. I'm really pleased with this unit and would definitely recommend it. ... show more

  • Great Little Winder
Color: Purple
Winding skeins into perfect balls is such a pleasure with this ball winder. I have a wooden, Amish yarn swift that holds the skein, which makes it much easier. So I cannot speak to how well it works without one. I find it incredibly meditative! I like that it attaches to my dining room table and can easily be removed. ... show more

  • Great Little Machine
Color: Purple
This is a wonderful contraption. Changed my whole knitting experience. The price is very reasonable, considering how well it workks. I did read some of the other comments, therefore, I go medium speed. If I go at a faster speed, it squeaks. I usually make the balls as large as I can. I read one of the reviews that said the recommended size of the ball is smaller. I didn't see that in the description, although, I need to go back and look. When I assembled it, I was somewhat confused when I put the spinning arm on. I finally realized that the screw went on the bottom side towards the middle. Otherwise, I found the instructions to be understandable. I do not try to store it in the box because if the metal yarn holder is pushed towards the machine, the plastic does scratch. I don't believe it was designed to be stored in the box. I recommend buying this product. ... show more

  • A bit disappointing
Color: Purple
I don't often write reviews- but I felt I should share to save someone the trouble. I have been crocheting pretty intensely for a couple of years now and decided that I ought to get a yarn ball winder to save myself the time and wrist pain of making them by hand When I saw that Knitpicks had one and it got good reviews, I grabbed it right away! I've gotten some absolutely lovely yarns from them and preferred to get one from a brand I recognize. I assumed the quality of their yarn would carry over- unfortunately, that's not the case. My first impression- it felt a bit cheap, but that's not a deal breaker for me as I don't need one for anything terribly intense. Putting the pieces together was simple and easy, and it was plenty sturdy on the table. I started winding my recent yarn purchase (viscose yarn) and things started to go awry right away. It was very confusing trying to figure out the proper angles and tension to hold the yarn at for it to form a sturdy ball. My yarn kept slipping all over the place and I needed to keep unwinding it. I ended up holding it at a 90 degree angle from the metal feeder as opposed to the straight through approach shown in the images and given in the instructions. This gave slightly better results, and I was able to make it through a few skeins but it was frustrating and slow going. Given, I prefer the modern natural yarns hitting the market in recent years- bamboo, tencel, mercerized cotton, merino wool and such as opposed to acrylic- so this is probably increasing the slippage and unwinding I was having to do. Switching to the few acrylic skeins I have went better, but that's not what I primarily use so that is a major downside. Then, about a dozen *small* skeins in, it started making a horrendous squeaking noise about every five cranks of the handle. I'm not the sort of person opposed to oiling the mechanics, but can't figure out how to get to the parts generating the noise without completely dismantling it. Finally, as I took it down to put away for the first time the plastic supports for the feeder broke- even though I gently pulled it down before turning it. I'm not sure if it will even hold for a second use. In summary- this is cheaply made and performed as such. I may have received a dud, but I'm rather disappointed. However, you may have better luck than me if you only/mostly have acrylic yarn to wind. I'll keep going to Knitpicks for their yarn and other supplies, but unfortunately I think this will be the first and last time I get any of their equipment. ... show more
