Style: CBP95 9 ½ Block Plane
received today. nice little block plane useable right out of the box --can be used for other purposed in the box as well. I used a sheet of 120grit wet/dry paper and a sheet of plate glass , after a few hundred strokes of sanding ,I was able to flatten the sole to my satisfaction..... no fear if you want to buy one -works well ... show more

  • Perfectly usable if you can sharpen
Style: CBP95 9 ½ Block Plane
Get your flat surface(shelf?) and 120 grit ready, because you will have to remove a lot of material to correct the poor factory quality control and get this flat. But once you do, it's a great tool for the price. Unlike what some of the other commenters seem to insist, it's completely possible with patience and determination. I spent about an hour or two getting this plane from the box into the state shown in my pictures. I think what the others were doing wrong was not starting on a low enough grit, because it would take forever to flatten this on a stone. I used 120 - 400 - 600 - 1000 - 1200 and stropped the blade, and it worked like a treat. The plane now shaves straight through walnut end grain, so I'm happy; that's honestly more than I expected to get. One note is that the logo is actually a sticker. I thought it was stamped or engraved but it fell right off, and now it looks cleaner without the logo. ... show more

  • Compacto y práctico
Style: CBP65 6 ½ Block Plane
... show more

  • Good price but expect to work on it a lot.
Style: CBP65 6 ½ Block Plane
The price is reasonable, and the plane can be a good investment, if you are willing to put in a lot of effort to make it work. The sole of the plane I bought was not flat at all. I spent hours sanding the sole to get it flat. I needed to sand the sides of the adjustable mouth plate, since it was binding. Neither side of the plane blade was flat, so that took a lot of sanding before I could even sharpen it. It took a while to sharpen the blade since it looks as if they used some sort of small diameter cutting wheel to cut the bevel, as there is a definite concavity within the bevel. I had to oil everything since all of the controls on it where very stiff. I had to take a file to the mouth of the plane to smooth it out. I also had to sand the bed of the plane since it was roughly machined. I also had to sand the lever cap so it could set flush on the blade and apply even pressure. Once all of that was done, the plane has been working very well, except for a little too much play or backlash on the blade adjustment system that makes precise adjustments a little difficult. ... show more

  • Great for the money
Style: CBP65 6 ½ Block Plane
Got this to shave down a door I install in an entryway they was sticking, worked like a charm. I see a lot of people whining about it but don’t let that deter you. You have to set it up correctly to have it work right, which mainly involves making sure the blade is seated right. The shoe was a bit beveled at the front and back but that had no impact on the majority of the cutting surface which was perfectly flat. After taking 2 mins to make sure it was adjusted correctly, I was getting nice long shaves off a pine door, def a win for the price. I don’t know if it’s up to par for someone who’s planing wood every day, but for those of you who will use it intermittently here and there, definitely go for it. ... show more

  • Hard to review ...
Style: CBP65 6 ½ Block Plane
CONSIDERING the price point, there should be reasonable expectations on the product. You should expect to do some flattening, polishing, breaking rough edged, sharpening blade and even some filing if things do not fit well. You should also expect the adjuster to have a fair amount of backlash and the lateral adjustment be finicky. I know that, I have bought SnJ planes before and I still like them. HAVING SAID THAT, my plane has 2 main issues that I would have expected not to be there, 1. The mouth is VERY OPEN, in the fully closed position it is 5 mm wide (fully open is 9mm wide). And since the blade protrudes ~2mm for a light shaving from the back of the mouth, that still leaves AT LEAST 3 mm of open space in front of the blade. I cannot imagine needing to open the mouth more than 3mm in front of a blade ever (this is not a scrub plane ...). 2. Blade steel is very bad. I am not sure if this is a quality control issue, where my specific blade was not tempered correctly, but the steel feels extremely soft and is not able to hold an edge (There is also a lot of chipping happening even when sharpening with a honing guide on water stones). In the future I will get an after-market blade (which will probably cost more than this plane ...), but right now it is working for me because I ask from the tool what the tool can provide. ... show more

  • Looks good but bad quality
Style: CBP95 9 ½ Block Plane
First thing I had to do is square and sharpen the blade then have to eyeball the blade to be parallel cause there’s lots of play and not a good fit. Last is the bottom not flat. When I can rock my straight edge on the bottom somone didn’t care for quality. I’d say if you want a hand planer to clean up wood that doesn’t matter then this is worth it but using it for woodworking spend the extra money get a good one right out the box ... show more
