  • Heavy duty
I bought this as a replacement for a max haul I hated and returned. This thing is great, on a Ford Explorer. It is sturdy, heavy duty, hauls a lot, and is exactly as described. We loaded it with lots of icechest full of fish and ice, some heavy gear and a wagon strapped over it all. Worked perfectly. It folded easily, it is fairly heavy but to me that means secure, and I just put it in the hitch with my son. It is very spacey and the mesh at the bottom is awesome for not worrying about stuff falling through. ... show more

  • Oh my best travel purchase yet!
This took a little time for my husband to assemble but it wasn’t difficult he said. We have a Suburban & were traveling as a family of 4 adults & 2 kids. We needed extra travel room for suitcases, ice chests, fishing poles, games & groceries. We decided this looked perfect for our luggage & we are not disappointed at all! Our luggage cases were strategically placed in the carryon unit & we stuffed blankets & sheets in all air pockets in between. Thank goodness for the cover because we drove a windy dirt road to get to our final destination & the cover was covered on dirt. It didn’t hurt a thing inside! The cover was great & proven weatherproof for us. This unit is very sturdy & we LOVE it! I would recommend to take the tool used with you that you connect to your vehicle hitch unit inside your vehicle in case you don’t want to leave the entire unit on the back while your away for your stay. We never had to worry about it at our destination but I did take it in case I felt the area was sketchy. I’m a worry wart though 😉 ... show more

  • Serves its purpose with no issue for now
Used it on a a 1,000 mile trip with no issues. Internal loading space is (22 1/2x 58 1/2). Used a BougeRV Hitch Cargo Carrier Bag 20 Cubic Feet (59" 24" 24"). Cons: Rack has some imperfections that is has a slight lean on the hitch. Rack did not perfectly line up when assembling. Having your own tools to put together will be better but at least they provide the basic tools in case you don't but will be challenging for some. Some rust residue has leaked out on the rack when it rains & likely coming from inside the main tube. None is visible on the outside where its painted. I don't have this rust situation with my hollywood bike rack for comparison. A little rust-oleum inside the tube should help. Pros: Assembling was reasonably easy. It does the task needed & sturdy. Weight wise its around 55lbs give or take. Heavy for some but light enough for others. My hollywood bike rack is around 70 something pounds so in comparison its good for me. I put reasonable weight on the rack on a 1K mile trip & had no issue. The price is a reasonable value for what you get. Can't speak on durability but assume it should hold up for awhile. Considerations: Carrier used on a Ford Explorer with after market hitch. Seen a few reviews that some had the carrier bag get damaged or melt due to the exhaust heat. Seriously consider if your going to use a carrier bag or just in general how close or line of direction your exhaust is in reference to your rack. My exhaust & bottom of the rack were directly in line. I made 2 additions to fix this concern. Purchased a MAXXHAUL 50397 Hitch 4 Inch Riser. This extended the rack up & out the way of the exhaust heat. Additionally used 1 ft. x 1 ft. Diamond Tread Aluminum sheet cut it in half & mounted each piece on the rack as an additional barrier to deflect/absorb any potential heat. I determined that likely it was not needed in my situation after using it a few times. I will leave it on just as a precaution. Recommend at minimum if you do not have a riser to at least do this. Secondly, I read a review of a rack coming apart from a welding point where the Main tube & receiver tube are welded. My opinion that the weld point did not give me great confidence for a rack rated to carry 550lbs max load. I also compared it to my Hollywood (4) bike rack & saw a difference. I'm not claiming the weld is faulty or a reason to not purchase. There are many reviews showing rack loaded with weight & no issues. As a precautionary & peace of mind I improvised & used a 2.5" Anti Rattle Clamp Hitch Tightener to reinforce the weld point. Placed a metal brace under the main tube so the anti tightener plate will push the main tube into the receiver tube. Additions to my setup: Carrier bag limits view of license plate & lights. Added the following items. Alpena Tailgate LED Strip - No hardwiring needed. Plugs directly into my 4 pin connector & strip has adhesive backing. Very bright day & night. Wire to connect has plenty of length. BGGTMO License Plate Bracket Holder - Installed with zip ties & velcro straps. Allows me to mount license plate to rack when its obstructed on the vehicle. Anti-Rattle Receiver Pin - Used the Anti Rattle Clamp Hitch Tightener & hitch lock that came with the rack on the 4 inch riser. Then replaced the hitch pin that locks the rack & riser together with an anti-rattle receiver pin. Prevented movement of the rack on my trip. ... show more

  • Not terrible to install if you can turn a wrench.
I'm not sure that I would trust the claimed 550 pounds capacity but the unit itself is quite nice. The rack is sturdy but the hitch extension is pretty flimsy. But it works for a hundred pounds or so (I put a small generator on it). The unit I received was not level due to faulty welding of said hitch extension. I contacted King Bird and Ivy responded very promptly. After being asked to try a couple things to see if the issue would get corrected, Ivy sent me an entire second rack at no cost to me. The rack itself I would probably rate 4 stars but the customer service is exceptional and definitely bumps this rack to a solid 5 stars! ... show more

  • STURDY! STURDY!! STURDY!!!
This thing is STURDY!! And heavy. But sturdy. I was able to get it put together and attached to my car with minimal grunting and cursing, but once it was on, it was ON! I used the provided stabilizing bar, and never once felt like it was bopping around the back of the vehicle on my 2,300mile drive. Yes, you read that right. 2,300 miles. And it stayed on the whole time. And it’s HUGE!! I appreciated the size of the item itself and that they provided straps and a net to help secure my items in place. Major con (that I obviously didn’t take a star off for because it’s soo good otherwise)… the tools they provide to put it together are CRAP. Super flimsy. They were bent before I was half way through. Luckily I had real tools I could use. ... show more

  • Great value
Overall great value product. Easy to assemble but would reccomend using loctite or similar to secure everything as it didnt come with any. Only downside is the weight but two adults can easily manage the installation. Would upgrade the locking pin as it is OK but a pain to use and can be tough to lock in a tight space. The cargo net that came with it was too small to fit all the gear I needed for my triathlon so I ended up buying a cargo net for a truck. That being said, the original net is nice for what it would be used for to cover smaller items. Overall very happy with it! ... show more
