I bought this for my son who loves playing detective. He wanted a real metal detector for Christmas, but I was concerned that it would be too complicated for him. This is perfect for kids because it is so user friendly. It alerts you with sound and the led screen when you find an object. It's not very heavy so they can operate it easily. It is also adjustable so it grows with the child.

Got this for daughter's birthday. When opened the screen seemed scratched (maybe a used unit???). It's a very simple device. Easy to assemble. A little bit heavy for my 7yo daughter to move around, but she loves it. We first tested it at home (hiding metal items in shoes or under books) and it did seem to work. Next we tested it on the beach and we did find bottle caps (under about 1" of sand). So it does seem to work.

If I could give zero stars I would! Bought for my 9 year old as a birthday gift. It wouldn't turn on. Thought perhaps the batteries that came with it were old but replaced them with new batteries and it still wouldn't turn on. I couldn't return it either because I had bought it well before his birthday and he didn't open it to see it wouldn't work until after the return period. A waste of money and very disappointing!

My grandkids were excited to use this metal detector. The first thing they found was a lost apartment key someone else had lost about 3 inches deep in the dirt. They were able to find other pieces of metal, a deck screw, and about $1.71 in change in the dirt around the parking lot in a short time as we tested it out. The monitor clearly showed the difference between iron and coins, which made it easy to identify the good stuff. In order to adjust the height more easily, I had to add a little bit of grease on the threads of the locking mechanism so it could be opened/closed easily. It tended to lock in place before I lubed it. After that, the height was easy to adjust between the two kids as they took turns. One improvement I'd recommend is making all of the length of the shaft be able to collapse into the handle so you can stow the whole device in the backpack without having to disassemble and disconnect the plug. The way it is now, we had to remove the lower two sections of the shaft from the handle and then unplug the connector every time we wanted to put the detector into the included backpack. I see this as a potential weak point over time if someone uses it a lot. Slightly inconvenient. Young kids may have a shorter attention span and lose interest quickly. But older kids (around 8 yrs and older) may find it exciting to see what they can find and comprehend shifting directions to pinpoint where the signal of buried treasure is pinging from. My grandkids had fun, and found it interesting, which was important to me. Thank you!

I bought this for my grandchildren, ages 6 to 8, since we live on the beach and they can use it all year long. We like to bury in the sand any random items/tools/coins we have lying around the house, then have them go out and search for them. The kid ones I had in the past did not have an armrest and they quickly got tired of holding the handle and trying to sway it back and forth. This one is adjustable, a must as they grown taller. I also love the underwater feature. so much fun!

Bought this for my 10 yr old daughter to use at the beach. It's very light weight and seems to work good. She found a bunch of stuff while on her first trip - most of it about a few inches below the surface. Overall this is a great option for kids!
