Being my first time, raising chickens, after reading all of the contradicting opinions about the best way to keep them warm, I elected to buy this and I’m glad I did. I also have the Brinsey Eco-glow available as an additional heat source for the chicks to choose. As it was relatively cold in the garage, the chicks needed to remain warm however they don’t necessarily need to have a high ambient temperature. 50° or warmer is acceptable, but they do need a place for higher contact heat, which is what this provides. With this, they are able to sit on top and get warm from below and the Brinsey allows them to huddle underneath like they were under a mother hen. Over the first few critical weeks, my chicks used both almost evenly. The thing that makes this type of heating exceptional is that heat lamps create dangerous un-manageable heat, which can overheat the chicks and potentially cause fires. With this type of heater, you do not have that worry, and it maintains a proper temperature that is safe for the chicks. If the chicks get too hot, they can move away and go on about their business but when they get cold, they can come over and sit on top and warm up.The hard plastic is easily cleaned when it is covered with poop and other brooder messes. The particular size that I ordered was perfect for seven baby chicks and all you had to do was plug it in, give it about 15 minutes to get to the proper temperature and lay it directly on your bedding without the fear of fire. Additionally, I have a 17-year-old cat that likes to stay warm and after the chicks no longer needed it,I was able to use this for her as well. All I had to do was put this underneath her favorite blanket and she was golden.

Great heating pad for my chickens!

I got this heating pad for my baby chicks when they were a few days old and they slept on it for weeks. Then after they grew a lot and moved from their baby box to their chicken coop, I used it again during winter when it got below freezing for a few weeks. It helped to keep their enclosed coop a little warmer without using a big heater.

Not an adequate heat source for day old chicks

This is a good product but I would not recommend it as the only heat source for very young chicks. We bought a heat plate from rentacoop but it wasn’t arriving until late in the evening on the day we were getting our chicks so I ordered this to have in the brooder for the meantime. We had our heat turned up, had a space heater in the room and put this heat pad in the brooder. The chicks were obviously too cold, they were all huddled together, chirping like crazy while laying on the pad. When we added in the heat plate once it arrived they were much quieter and happier. They are about 2 and a half weeks old now and they still sleep under the heat plate but they enjoy having the heat pad. In the morning they all like to lay on it, cuddled together with the morning sun shining on them. We will also keep it in our coop once they transition out of the brooder. It warms up quickly and is relatively easy to clean though chick poop really sticks badly to everything. We just keep a single paper towel layer over it so it doesn’t get covered in poop constantly. It can be unplugged and scrubbed off with soap if necessary which is nice. It also has holes in each corner if you wanted to secure it to the floor of your brooder or a place inside of your coop. I would recommend it as a second heat source if you’re using a heating plate instead of a heat lamp (they make me nervous so we went with the plate.) I don’t think it would be necessary if you do choose to use a heat lamp. It would also be a good heat source for inside of a coop but it’s only big enough for one adult chicken. Our 5 chicks all fit comfortably on it and it’s probably big enough for close to 10 chicks. It seems to be well made and very durable.

GREAT FOR BABY CHICKS

I have two baby chicks that I was worried about not being warm enough during this winter storm and didn’t want to put a heating bulb in with them because the bulb itself gets too hot and might burn them. This was the perfect solution for them! It only heats up when they are laying on it, it is a hard heating pad so I don’t have to worry about the chicks peeing or pooping on it. I can just wipe it right off. The covered cord protects it from the baby chicks being able to peck on it and also from wildlife, such a mice chewing on it. They LOVED it. Anytime I would go to the barn to check on them they were laying on it and they never seemed to be getting to warm.

I bought this to keep my quail warm during the cold nights. It is easy to clean, I've got it in the cage under a 9 x 13 metal cake pan that has pine shavings in it. I gave it 4 stars on warmth, because while it's warm, I don't think it is warm enough for a colder area (coldest night has been 15 so far). You don't have to worry about anyone getting burned by it, so I guess the level of heat it puts out is sufficient. Just know that if you get colder temps, you will need to add more protection for your birds. I'm not sure how well it would work for keeping babies warm--I'm planning on finding out in the spring. After, having some colder days and nights, I had a thought about switching out what was in the pan that sits on top of the heater. I filled it with play sand and it is much warmer now. They also love to take baths in the sand, so a win-win! I still think you'll need more than this in a colder area, but with the right combo it works.

Great for baby birds!

Got this for a baby Sparrow that has been thrown out of her nest by Starlings & I couldn't get it back in as it was a couple stories up. I took the bird in & was trying to rely on a regular heating pad on low and wrapped in a few towels as even the low setting was too hot for the little bird. Those heating pads also only stay on for a maximum of 1.5 hrs & I was not sleeping b/c of getting up to turn it back on. I shopped & found this heating pad which is MADE for baby birds and kept a perfect temperature without worrying about burning the bird & best of all- it stays on!! The baby bird is now flying and happy & has a forever home with a bird rescuer lady and a while house and porch to fly around in. And of course now another animal needs help, a sweet cat that was abandoned & while I try to find a home for him, I know if it gets cold out, he will be warm & happy on this heating pad.

Ambient room temp important for day old chicks

If this pad is the only heat for 1 day old chicks, the ambient room temperature must be above 70 degrees for them to be content. We purchased this heating pad for 4 - 1 day old chicks, initially to be in our garage which was about 48 degrees. I had the babies in a dog crate which was completely covered with a heavy blanket to help keep heat in. I covered the pad with a shoe box for extra protection. They huddled on the pad the first night to sleep but the next morning when they came out to eat they were very distressed, cold and peeping. I also had a ceramic heat emitter outside their box which they were standing under all smushed together while they all peeped. So they ended up coming inside to our utility room with the heat bulb clamped on top of a big tall tote and their heat mat under the box. I used a piece of duct tape to secure the heat lamp clamp so it wouldn't move. I covered the back half of the tote with a towel for 4 days until they were starting to spend more time out of their box. I uncovered the tote at 4 days which lowered the temp from 92 on top of their box to 82 on their box. At 8 days old, I switched out their heat bulb for a regular LED light bulb on a timer for light 6A to 9P like more normal light patterns. They will still have their heat pad and their little "barn" which they like very much. Once they get all their feathers we'll try back out to the garage with their heat pad if they want it. Again, not enough heat for the first week unless ambient room temps are higher.

Very good heat source for newborn rabbits.

Was very grateful for this little heat mat this past week. One of my rabbits had a litter just days before a hard freeze. The barn does not have heat, but we don't get many freezes during the year. I buried the heating pad under some straw in the nesting box and drilled a hole at the back to run the cord. The cord is very sturdy and so far, chew proof. This kept the kits alive and hopping. Very easy and inexpensive fix. Otherwise I would have to bring the cages into the garage and set up a heater, which gets pretty messy after a few days. The heat seems to be consistent and the kits love it.
