Because of ratcheting mechanism, both spreading plates need pressure to start the ratchet, please squeeze them for the first few swing until the suitable size to insert into the calipers, then go ahead to swing.

Kinda dopy ratcheting design (or dopy user) but did the job on my large Wilwood calipers. Should work on ALL calipers in my limited experience.

After years of doing brake jobs and pushing in caliper pistons with a c-clamp and a bar/wrench, I decided to get one of these. I used it on four piston front calipers and single piston rear calipers and it did the job, but a few annoying things: - The magnets to hold the larger pieces in place aren't strong enough. I tried using them, but luckily, it was large enough without the pieces in place to work on the calipers that I did the brake job on. - And the big annoyance is what others have mentioned, in that the wrench will not ratchet without a lot of pressure on the assembly. Ugh. I had to wedge a screwdriver against one side of the plate in order to get the silly thing to ratchet. Once you get in contact with the piston and are pushing it in, it has enough pressure to ratchet, but removing the tool, and getting it in place to start pushing is quite annoying. Still easier than using c-clamps though.

I really like this caliper retractor tool. It's very versatile because it works in most caliper configurations. Single, dual, quad - it'll work. It does take some getting used to, though. You have to hold the center pin when there is no resistance... this is so the ratcheting feature works because of the backdrag. I also don't like that the reversing lever isn't marked. I had to label mine with a paint pen - "IN" and "OUT" - on either side of the wrench. The tool works great at doing its job of retracting the pistons. I'd definitely recommend it.
