Just push down the yoke to engage the tube and with fewer rotations than your current tool, you've got a precise flare or swage. An innovative spring-loaded block holds the tube firmly in place. Received tool in good condition. So far it has proved to be an excellent tool for flares and swages. I haven't had to use it too much but I just have to be more careful on smaller diameter piping such as 1/4 and 5/16 and not overtightening the clamp bar. The clamp naturally leaves knurl type markings on the pipe, the same as other flare tools, but I've noticed those little krurls might interfere with your flare nut if you're not careful. Just be sure to practice on some scrap tubing before you start flaring or swaging on you're actual lineset. Also, the bar has a convenient pipe stop for flares. It's nice but I wasn't sure if it compensated for 410a systems which usually require a bit more flare surface area. The user instructions do not aren't that specific when it comes to this. I usually clamp the pipe flush to the top of the stop just to make sure. Haven't had any problems so far. I would definitely recommend getting this tool if you are shopping for one. ... show more

I use it for swage more than flaring and it was a good alternative price wise compared to the hydraulic swage kit. Works great if a bit bulky just for swage.

    • Not Well Engineered
The problem with setbacks in a project is that sometimes it takes over a month to start. This was the case with my ductless ac installation. I bought all of my tools from Amazon including this Hilmor Flare kit. The kit was the most expensive tool that I purchase. I attempted to flare a 3/8” tube and on my last turn of the handle, the spring loaded plastic clutch engaged. It did not break, it simply popped. Subsequent uses of the tool caused the clutch to engage on the first turn making it unable to complete the flare. The problem is that the plastic piece jumps off of the treads and essentially stops the flaring process. I am outside of the return window, so I will contact Hilmor to see what they can do to rectify this... ... show more

    • Hope my purchase is just a defect and not their actual finished product?
Sorry but I am returning this flaring and swage kit, it pinches my line set and it is not easy to turn this handle to either swage or make flares? Disappointed in the fact it does not have an automatic clutch and using their guide stop for flares and checking it with my measuring tool from black max it always came up too small, found that you have to set your line even with their line stop not at the stop to get the proper flare size? After seeing the majority of the posted reviews on this I thought this would be a much easier tool than what it really is? To be fair I may have a defective product which still remains to be seen? I also purchased the bender kit at the same time and I really like its performance so I haven't given up on Hilmor as a whole and in fact I am going to try their compact swage kit to see how well it performs ? ... show more

This set to me is the best on the he market. I have been using the swagging kit for a couple of months now and it is awesome. I could have purchased the expander kit but after reading a few reviews on the different brands out there I decided to go with Hilmor instead. I find that I can swage a tube in under five minutes before without burs our unnecessary bends or crimps in the tube. This is a very compact system can compared to similar models and comes in a case with metal straps that I hope will make it more durable in the long run over the typical plastic ones that come with similar sets. ... show more

I purchased the Hilmore after comparing to many of the competition. I have worked 30 years in the HVAC field and needed new flare tool for a mini-split system. These systems require critical flares to insure no leaks on its connections. What a pleasure it was to work with this tool! It's precise operation and precision made this part of the fun. I was really impressed of its precision and feel. I would highly recommend this tool to anyone looking for a "keeper" to the tool box. ... show more
