The outside gets super, super hot. Although the plugs stay fairly cool. The glass lid is actually pretty good. The two big vent holes in the glass lid are big enough that water does not try to escape through the sides. Which is a great benefit. Chemical smell is pretty rough the first time you use it. The pot itself was much, much more shallow than I anticipated. Electric cord is extremely short. I can't tell you if the automatic shut off feature works, as I've decided to return this because of the outer shell being so hot, being a big concern to me. And that's likely because there is no inner shell and outer shell. So all the heat is conducted to the outside. Probably my oversight when I bought this product. Next time I'll be looking for one that has an inner and outer layer.

This is a great item to have when you are out of stove top burners, especially around the holidays when you are cooking or heating more items. Or any event or party where 4 burners aren't enough. Also for bringing food to a potluck or party at a friend's where their burners are all busy, & all you need is a plug off a counter! I got this for some coffee table hot pot, while watching TV. First of all, it’s incredibly simple to use. Plug it in, add water, and turn the dial. The dial has two heat settings, which seem to equate to “simmer” and “boil”. There’s no other temperature control. I honestly thought that would be a bigger pain than it really is. Heating is relatively quick considering it’s rated at 700w, but adding a bunch of frozen goodies to the boiling liquid quickly brought it to a halt and took longer than expected to heat back up. i kind of expected this, and to get going I started off by adding a little water and brining it to a boil, then adding separately boiled water from a kettle to fill the pot. Honestly though, even though it requires a bit more patience than I’m used to for hot pot, it’s so convenient that I’m willing to forgive pretty much anything. Except the cord length. I don’t know what they were thinking on this one, but it’s SO short. Luckily it’s a normal computer (IEC) power cord so finding a suitable longer one is easy enough. Cleanup is sort of odd, because they caution you not to “immerse” in water because there are vents in the bottom. The heating portion (the pot) does NOT come out, so you do have to wash in place, and carefully enough to not get the rest of the unit wet. I’d really like it if the inner pot was removable for cleaning, but it’s non-stick so it cleans up quickly at least. Overall I’m very happy with this unit. It’s just barely big enough for two people, and requires some deliberate usage to make it work, but it’s so convenient that it’s worthwhile.
