It really works!
I’m 68 yrs old. It really helps me get outside and allows me to walk further (2-3 miles) with less effort and fatigue. It’s also a great conversation starter. I get stopped often and asked “ What is that!” I highly recommend it for seniors.

Very good, but a couple of annoying issues
There is a lot of good here. But let me start with what could be better. First, it is very inconvenient to have to install the battery in the device to charge it. The description says you must have your own charger, so I assumed that it would plug directly into the battery. Instead of the "free" shoulder harness, it should include the external docking station I had to order for $59, especially because I ordered a second battery, which also should be included in my opinion. The manual is pretty good, but the app is cumbersome to get installed. Who would have thought that special characters would cause your password to be deemed not conforming? and it got "stuck" several times during the initial set up. In fact, I gave up on it, then the next day it kind o magically decided to be nice. The straps to cinch it around your waist and legs are extremely hard to use. Now, the good news. It works! It works very well. It clearly states it is not a medical device. I get why they say that. But it should be -- infer what you will from that. ECO mode 2nd power level is enough for just walking around type activity for me. The higher modes were way too much for me -- the device was making my legs kick like some of the videos you see of robots going berserk. Overall, I am very glad I got it. I just think the relatively little things I mentioned could be fixed to make this a 5 star+ product. ... show more

Bionic Legs With an AI Mode That Quickly Learns My Stride
When I heard about this device, I wanted to try it out, especially since it has built-in AI logic that detects movement. The packaging is well protected, and the box contains the exoskeleton already stored inside its carry case. That case also comes with a shoulder strap, a built-in handle, and a USB-C cable that lets me charge the battery directly from the exoskeleton. The double zipper on the case is strong and moves smoothly, avoiding the annoying snags of single zippers. Along with the folded exoskeleton, the set comes with 1 battery right in the case. Getting started was somewhat long, but the instructions were easy to follow using the Hypershell app I pulled off the Google Play store. Made sure to get the battery charged beforehand, just like the app directed. I never had to open the paper instruction book once since the app explained it all with video guides, showing me how to get the exoskeleton properly adjusted and strapped onto my hips and thighs. This covered exactly how to tighten the buckles, find the right hip width, and lock down the thigh strap placement. It also showed me how to turn on the device (tap the power, then immediately long press it for 2 seconds), how to swap the power level, and how to change the activation from eco to hyper to standby without needing the phone. The app has a ton of extra configurations, like deactivating the AI into preset modes or using dedicated modes that determine the default assistance movements. There's even a beta fitness mode that caught my eye. Other advanced settings let me adjust the torque differential between the 2 sides, pick precise power levels from 1 to 100 (since the hardware buttons only jump in 25 percent increments), and turn on a mode for low-speed walkers. The app also tracks estimated travel speed and elevation gain, and it counts my steps and estimated distance, which is partially calculated based on the height and weight I set during the initial setup. Taking the device out for a spin was a fun and unique experience. With the AI mode, it takes a step or 2 before it figures out whether I'm walking normally, running, or taking stairs. I can feel it help lift my legs higher, making them feel lighter during normal walking and running, though the physical impact of each step stays the same. On stairs, my legs do way less work and get tired a lot slower since the motor assists the full step process. It doesn't just assist in one direction either, so I can take a wider step or turn without feeling restricted. When I don't need active assistance, a quick tap puts it in standby (transparency) where it sits idle, though it does still restrict me from doing a full split, so I have to take it off for deep stretching. The fitness mode needs a bit of work. With normal walking steps or runs, my leg lift is so small I feel minimal resistance, and it just feels like it helps me put my feet down faster. Only really feel the resistance when doing regular leg lifts, knee-ups, or high-knee runs. Everything from the build quality and strap comfort to the fluid motions and app responsiveness really impressed me. I never used the older non-S Max version, but the AI auto-switching is incredibly helpful since I definitely don't want to manually switch modes for short durations. I also own the latest Ultra S model, which adds dune and snow modes, an extra battery, a 4-battery charging hub, and titanium parts instead of aluminum and steel. Battery life matched the app claims: it gets about 15 miles on eco mode or 5 miles in hyper, boost, and fitness modes, which is plenty for a day outside. ... show more

Meh
No significant help to mobility
Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2026 by Denir A.

I liked it so much I got a second one. This is something from the future. Amazing.
I was extremely skeptical about the Hypershell when I first received it, but after actually using it I have to admit this is one of the most interesting pieces of technology I have tried. I am a larger person at about 6 feet tall and 250 pounds, and I also have MS, so one of my biggest concerns was whether it would fit me comfortably or even adjust enough to be usable. That ended up not being an issue at all. It fit me very well, and I actually had to tighten several of the adjustment points rather than maxing them out. Setup was shockingly easy. The included mobile app feels very finished and refined rather than like an afterthought, and getting everything configured and ready to use was much simpler than I expected. For me, the biggest difference is when walking longer distances, especially on trails or uneven terrain. When my legs start getting tired or feeling weaker, the assistance makes it feel like I have more range left in me. I am not suggesting this is a medical device or that everyone will have the same experience, but personally it has made walking more enjoyable and has encouraged me to get out and walk more simply because using it is fun. The battery has also impressed me. It provides plenty of power and lasts a long time between charges based on my use. The exoskeleton itself feels extremely durable and well engineered, with the kind of construction I would expect from an expensive piece of equipment. Using it genuinely feels like technology from the future, almost like something you would expect to see in a science fiction movie rather than something you can strap on and use today. What surprised me most is how much I ended up enjoying it. I originally approached it with a lot of skepticism, but it has helped make walking exciting for me again and gives me some extra assistance when I start getting tired. I have become such a fan of my Hypershell that I ended up getting another one. It is certainly an unusual and expensive piece of technology, but based on my experience, it is also very impressive. ... show more

Limited indication
The Hypershell exoskeleton holds promise for the future but this generation is not there yet. Full disclosure, I did try it and have a neurological left leg weakness. My hip flexor is very weak so take the review for what it's worth. The problem I find with the unit is that it does not lift your leg up adequately to clear objects; it augments your movement but if you're expecting significant power, this isn't it. The swing arm actuators propel your legs forward, not so much upward. This is great if you just need a "push" when hiking or walking. But you need the ability to initiate movement for this to help. If you have a disability and expect miracles, I would caution against purchasing this exoskeleton. It is a significant investment. I tried it on uneven terrain and just walking on flat ground, where it excelled. The one issue was that the software is not predicting accurate walking kinematics. For example, when I wanted to turn, the unit didn't "know" what to do and would suddenly stop. If you have balance issues, this could make you fall. Also, the leg swing arms would not time correctly with your movement especially when the computer was "confused" whether you were stopping or initiating steps. There was a significant lag time. In fairness to Hypershell, there is the disclaimer that it's not meant for medical problems or disabilities. I think it would be great for the elderly looking for better forward propulsion or active hikers looking to go longer. The app worked great and connection was seamless and quick. I didn't test it long enough to check battery life but it appeared adequate for my trial. The unit was reasonably light and not very cumbersome although hiking with it for hours may become an issue. The leg straps and hip battery pack had a tendency to loosen and slide downward. I ended up returning the unit. ... show more

This Is Wearable Tech You Can Actually Feel Working
The best comparison for the Hypershell is an electric pedal-assist bicycle. It does not move your legs for you; it senses the movement you are already making and adds power to it. That explanation makes far more sense than imagining a robot suit doing the walking. The X Max S is rated up to 1000W, and the assistance is most useful on hills, stairs, longer walks, and uneven terrain where repeatedly lifting the legs starts to add up. Fit is absolutely critical. The waist position, straps, and pivots need to line up with your body, and shorter users may have a harder time getting the leg pieces positioned correctly. I also like that the hardware works without a phone, even though the app unlocks finer control. Battery range will vary drastically with assist level and terrain, so I would plan conservatively rather than believing one universal mileage number. It is expensive and specialized, but the technology is not a gimmick, the assist is tangible. ... show more
